Best Resume Builders in 2026

Resume builders turn a work history into a formatted CV, and the market splits on what happens at download time: some charge a recurring fee for the file, others cap pages or stamp a watermark.

This guide ranks independence first, then the cost of a real job search, the export formats you keep and who each editor suits.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

In short

What resume builders do

A resume builder is an online editor with templates and prompts for a CV and cover letter, exporting the result as a file such as PDF, Word or plain text.

How we ranked these

5 criteria, in order

In this order: setup effort, what it really costs, how your data comes back out, whether you can leave, and who each resume builder is built for. On top of them sits one rule. The top three places are for challengers, which means vendors outside the big names, where the category has any, and the household brands come in from fourth place. Why those five, and why there is no score out of ten, is on the how we work page.

#1 Reactive Resume

Open source resume builder you can run on your own server

Ranked #1 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierOpen sourceSelf-hostablePublished pricingElsewhere

The homepage states that every feature is free and that no paid tier exists. Import accepts PDF, LinkedIn exports and JSON Resume files, which lets a CV move in from elsewhere and back out as JSON or Word.

Sharing links can be public, password protected or private, and an ATS readability checker, cover letters and a job application tracker are built in. Self-hosting means your own server, database and storage, so the work of keeping it running is yours.

What stands out
  • MIT licence
  • Docker self-hosting
  • DOCX and JSON export
Where it costs you
  • Only 18 templates are listed, a small range beside the paid builders.
  • Donations are the stated funding, so continuity depends on one named creator.
Right for

Job seekers who want a permanent, exportable CV with no subscription clock

Wrong for

Buyers who need a vendor to answer for uptime

Not stated by the vendorFree for every feature, funded by donations; open source under the MIT License; self-host with Docker

#2 FlowCV

Resume builder whose free plan allows unlimited PDF downloads

Ranked #2 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

FlowCV's no-cost plan lets you keep downloading PDFs without a watermark. Limits sit elsewhere: a single resume, a single letter and three imports.

Pro is priced for monthly cancellation, with quarterly and yearly terms on the same page, and renews automatically unless cancelled. The Job Tracker and AI translation arrive only with Pro, so the free plan is a tidy CV maker rather than a job-search workspace.

What stands out
  • Watermark-free PDFs
  • Job tracker
  • AI translation
Where it costs you
  • The free plan holds one resume, so a tailored second version needs Pro.
  • The page mentions no trial of Pro, only a refund window after paying.
Right for

People applying to a few roles who want a clean PDF at no cost

Wrong for

Applicants who want several tailored versions without paying

Not stated by the vendorZero-cost tier without a card; Pro on monthly, quarterly or yearly terms at published rates, with a 14-day refund window

#3 Novoresume

Danish resume builder with a limited Basic plan and term-based Pro

Ranked #3 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

Pro is paid once per term, in one, three or six months, rather than as a rolling subscription, which limits surprise renewals but also fixes the commitment. It brings 74 colour themes, 12 fonts, a custom layout and a cover letter builder.

Basic caps AI use at two credits a month and one single-page resume, enough to test the editor and little more. A 14-day money-back guarantee covers a first upgrade.

What stands out
  • ApS company
  • Term-based Pro
  • 144 document cap
Where it costs you
  • Basic stamps Novoresume branding on the PDF and allows a single page.
  • Pro cost cannot be seen before signing up.
Right for

#4 Kickresume

Resume builder with a student route to free Premium

Ranked #4 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

Students and teachers can claim Premium without charge after verifying status, with ISIC, ITIC and UNiDAYS named in the FAQ. Everyone else chooses between monthly, quarterly and yearly billing, where the longer term lowers the per-month figure sharply.

Premium adds personal website templates, a Career Map and import from LinkedIn or PDF. Quarterly and yearly plans include gift vouchers for friends, which Monthly does not list.

What stands out
  • Student Premium
  • Yearly discount
  • LinkedIn import
Where it costs you
  • The monthly rate is three times the yearly rate per month.
  • The free plan leaves out the AI Writer and the ATS Resume Checker.
Right for

Students and teachers who can verify their status and want Premium

Wrong for

Short-term job seekers who would pay the monthly rate

Not stated by the vendorPublished monthly, quarterly and yearly rates with a free plan; students and teachers may qualify for Premium at no cost

#5 Resumonk

Month-to-month resume builder with a DOCX export on paid plans

Ranked #5 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

There is no annual term to escape: both paid plans bill monthly and cancel whenever you choose. That suits a short search.

The free plan includes one AI improve pass and one AI job rewrite, so AI help can be sampled once. Professional is where DOCX and footer-free PDFs appear, along with a public resume page and unlimited cover letters.

What stands out
  • Monthly only
  • Footer on free PDF
  • Job introductions
Where it costs you
  • The free PDF carries a Resumonk footer and DOCX export is withheld.
  • Job searches and introductions in the top tier lie outside resume building.
Right for

Applicants who want to pay for one month and stop

Wrong for

Buyers who want a Word file without paying

Not stated by the vendorFree plan; two paid tiers at published monthly prices, no annual lock-in and no trial mentioned

#6 Rezi

ATS-scoring resume builder with a one-off lifetime option

Ranked #6 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

Rezi sells three ways in: free, a monthly Pro plan, or one lifetime payment. The lifetime plan carries Pro-level features, though the free monthly expert review is not included and can be bought separately.

A separate Enterprise tier is priced per 200 users and adds team roles, domain restriction, single sign-on and webhooks. No separate trial of paid plans is described, so the free plan is the way to test.

What stands out
  • Rezi Score
  • Lifetime payment
  • Team SSO tier
Where it costs you
  • The free plan stops after three PDF downloads.
  • The lifetime plan leaves out the free monthly expert review.
Right for

Applicants who dislike renewals and want a keyword-based resume score

Wrong for

Anyone who needs unlimited PDF exports without paying

Not stated by the vendorFree plan with no card; Pro monthly and a one-time lifetime payment, both published; Enterprise priced per 200 users

#7 Enhancv

Resume builder with job tailoring, ATS check and application tracker

Ranked #7 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

Beyond the editor, Enhancv lists one-click tailoring to a job description, an ATS check with a match score, a cover letter generator and an application tracker. A Chrome extension supports applying from job sites, and LinkedIn resume import is offered.

Translation is claimed for 30 languages on the homepage while the FAQ lists 12, an inconsistency worth clarifying before you rely on it. Cloud storage holds up to 300 documents.

What stands out
  • Job tailoring
  • Application tracker
  • Chrome extension
Where it costs you
  • The free plan expires after seven days.
  • The Pro price was unreadable on the pricing page when we looked.
Right for

Active job hunters who tailor each application to a posting

Wrong for

Buyers who want a permanent free plan or a visible price

Not stated by the vendorSeven-day free plan with basic sections; Pro billed quarterly, with the amounts unreadable on the pricing page

#8 VisualCV

Resume builder that adds a personal website and shareable links

Ranked #8 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

The reason to pick VisualCV is the web presence: Pro includes a personal website, shareable resume links and analytics on how the resume performs.

The free account is deliberately thin, since it blocks the personal website, shareable links and unlimited PDFs, and Career Journal access is on trial only. Quarterly billing ties you to three months, so confirm that a link-based CV is worth that before paying.

What stands out
  • Personal website
  • Shareable links
  • Career Journal
Where it costs you
  • A single resume and capped PDF downloads come with the free account.
  • The monthly price is hidden behind a toggle the page text does not display.
Right for

Applicants who want a web-hosted CV link rather than a PDF

Wrong for

Applicants who just need a few clean PDF downloads

Not stated by the vendorFree account with one resume; Pro billed quarterly at a published monthly rate, with no Pro trial mentioned

#9 Cake

Resume builder where AI credits, not templates, set the plan

Ranked #9 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

Cake meters its AI: 60 credits a month on the free plan and 600 on the paid plan. The quarterly rate is about 60 percent of the monthly one and the yearly rate roughly half, so commitment pays.

Free resumes carry privacy settings, but a single resume is the cap. The introductory first-week offer is not a trial, since it is a reduced charge on a paid plan, and it falls under a seven-day guarantee.

What stands out
  • AI credit allowance
  • Seven-day refund
  • Premium snippets
Where it costs you
  • The free plan allows only one resume.
  • The seven-day refund window is short next to the 14 days at other builders.
Right for

Applicants who want to cap AI usage against a monthly allowance

Wrong for

Buyers who write several resume versions on a tight budget

Not stated by the vendorFree plan with 60 AI credits; paid plans published monthly, quarterly and yearly, plus a first-week offer

#10 Resume.io

Resume builder with a cheap trial that renews every four weeks

Ranked #10 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

The pricing page shows prices in euros: a seven-day trial, an auto-renewing four-week plan and a quarterly plan. Four-week cycles mean thirteen charges a year rather than twelve, which the page does not spell out but arithmetic does.

The free plan includes limited sharing and analytics. Because all paid plans have a seven-day guarantee, a late cancellation request is the likeliest way to overpay.

What stands out
  • Four-week renewal
  • Seven-day trial
  • TXT-only free plan
Where it costs you
  • Free downloads are TXT only, so a formatted file needs a paid plan.
  • Four-week renewals add up faster than monthly billing.
Right for

Applicants who need one polished file this week and will cancel

Wrong for

People who tend to forget trial cancellations

Not stated by the vendorPublished trial price, then a four-weekly renewal or a quarterly plan; a free plan and a seven-day refund

#11 Resume Genius

US-oriented resume builder with a trial then four-weekly billing

Ranked #11 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

Two paid routes are published: a short trial that rolls into four-week renewals, and an annual plan paid once and auto-renewing.

The annual route works out far cheaper per month and is the one to take if you already know you want the service. Support area and job board are shown for the US only, so the value of the extras depends on where you apply.

What stands out
  • US job board
  • Four-week renewal
  • Annual option
Where it costs you
  • Free access exports TXT only.
  • The job board and support area are US only.
Right for

US applicants who want PDF and Word files from a paid plan

Wrong for

Applicants outside the United States who want local job listings

Not stated by the vendorFree access with TXT export; 14-day trial, then four-weekly billing, or an annual payment; both published

#12 Europass

Free CV and cover letter editor run by the European Commission

Ranked #12 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Pricing on requestElsewhere

Europass has no subscription model to compare, because the service is stated as free of any charge. The CV editor and cover letter editor each offer a choice of templates, and the 31-language sharing option is useful for roles abroad.

Nothing on the page read describes AI writing, ATS scoring or tracking, so it competes on price and language reach rather than on the extras that paid builders sell.

What stands out
  • Public service
  • 31 languages
  • Cover letter editor
Where it costs you
  • The page read does not state the export formats.
  • Account requirements are not described either.
Right for

Applicants who want a no-cost CV in several European languages

Wrong for

Buyers who want AI writing or job-tailoring features

Not stated by the vendorNo charge for the CV and cover letter editors, as stated on the service's own page

#13 Resume Worded

Resume review tool that scores your file out of 100

Ranked #13 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

The tools named are AutoFix, where AI rewrites need your approval and export as DOCX, Smart Target for matching a job description, cover letters with an AI writer, a LinkedIn review and ATS templates for Word and Google Docs.

A library of 250-plus sample bullet points helps with wording. Universities, bootcamps and employers are offered a demo. The free review is the entry point, and the homepage gives no way to price the paid tier.

What stands out
  • Score out of 100
  • AutoFix rewrites
  • LinkedIn review
Where it costs you
  • Resumes must be English, PDF or DOCX, and under 2MB.
  • The Pro plan is named without any price or billing terms.
Right for

Applicants holding a finished CV who want it scored and corrected

Wrong for

Applicants starting from a blank page or writing in another language

Not stated by the vendorFree resume review with unlimited re-uploads; a Pro tier is named but plan names and prices were not shown

#14 Jobscan

ATS resume scanner and match scorer with a resume builder attached

Ranked #14 of 14 in Best Resume Builders in 2026.

Pricing on requestElsewhere

Jobscan is built around matching: a Resume Scanner gives an ATS match score, and AI Optimize, Summary and Bullet Point generators help rewrite toward a posting. The builder is secondary.

The homepage promotes a free scan, but the paid plan names, prices and limits were not visible, so a buyer should read the app plan page directly before committing to any card payment.

What stands out
  • ATS match scoring
  • LinkedIn optimisation
  • Auto Apply
Where it costs you
  • Plan prices could not be checked because the pricing page redirected to an unreadable app page.
  • The builder is one feature among a long list of job-search tools.
Right for

Applicants with a finished CV who must match a posting

Wrong for

Buyers choosing a template-led editor as the main purchase

Not stated by the vendorResume scan offered at no cost; plan prices not shown on the homepage and the pricing page could not be read

How to choose resume builders

A resume builder is an online editor with templates and prompts for a CV and cover letter, exporting the result as a file such as PDF, Word or plain text. What separates these products is rarely a feature. Work through the steps below.

  1. 01

Decide whether you need a published price

Prices are public at 11 products (Reactive Resume, FlowCV, Kickresume, Resumonk, Rezi, Enhancv, VisualCV, Cake, Resume.io, Resume Genius, Resume Worded) and on request at the remaining 3, so budget time for quotes if your favourite is in that second group.

  2. 02

Look at where the vendor sits

Headquarters range over 2 countries and 2 regions: Elsewhere 13, Europe 1. Legal exposure follows the vendor, not only the data centre, so read the contracting entity before you sign.

  3. 03

Consider whether you want the source

1 of these are open source: Reactive Resume. Hosting one yourself trades a subscription for maintenance.

Resume builders: what the free plan lets you download

Start by testing the file you can actually take away, because free plans differ sharply. Resume.io and Resume Genius give TXT downloads only on their free plans, which is no use for an application. Resumonk allows a PDF but adds a Resumonk footer and withholds DOCX. Rezi stops at three PDF downloads, Novoresume stamps its branding, and Cake limits you to one resume.

FlowCV offers unlimited watermark-free PDFs, and Reactive Resume exports PDF, Word, Markdown and JSON at no cost. Build your CV in a free account first, download it, and open the file before you enter any card details, because a clean export is the real product, and a template gallery says little about it. Note too which limits apply: page counts, the number of resumes and how many downloads remain.

  • Download a PDF from the free plan and open it
  • Check for footers, branding or watermarks on the page
  • Confirm whether Word export is included before paying

Trial prices and four-week renewals at Resume.io and Resume Genius

Two builders sell a cheap trial that rolls into a dearer plan. Resume.io starts with a seven-day trial that renews every four weeks, and Resume Genius runs a 14-day trial that also renews every four weeks, with a yearly option. Four-week cycles produce thirteen charges a year, so the monthly feel is misleading.

Resumonk bills monthly with no annual lock-in, FlowCV offers monthly, quarterly and yearly terms with a 14-day refund, and Rezi sells a single lifetime payment. Decide how long your search will last, put a reminder in your calendar before the trial ends, and compare the annual or lifetime total against what four-week cycles would add up to over the same months.

  • Set a cancellation reminder before the trial ends
  • Convert four-week prices into a yearly total
  • Compare the refund windows, which run from seven to 14 days

ATS scores at Jobscan, Rezi and Resume Worded: what they measure

Several products sell a score, and each defines it differently. Jobscan gives an ATS match score against a pasted job posting, Rezi has the Rezi Score with keyword targeting, Resume Worded scores a resume out of 100 with line-by-line feedback, and Enhancv pairs its ATS check with a job match score.

Kickresume lists an ATS Resume Checker on paid plans, and Reactive Resume includes a readability checker. None of these pages shows how an employer's own system would read your file, so a high number proves only that the tool is satisfied. Use scores to catch missing keywords, then read the document yourself. Resume Worded also limits uploads to English PDF or DOCX files under 2MB.

  • Run the same CV through two scorers and compare the advice
  • Treat keyword gaps as prompts, not as rules
  • Check file type, language and size limits before uploading

Keeping your CV when you stop paying at a resume builder

A CV is a document you will reuse, so the exit matters more than the first month. Reactive Resume exports JSON, Word, PDF and Markdown, and imports from PDF, LinkedIn and JSON Resume. Kickresume lists LinkedIn and PDF import on paid plans, Novoresume Pro stores up to 144 documents, and Enhancv stores up to 300 in its cloud.

Cake allows one resume on its free plan, and VisualCV keeps shareable links and the personal website for Pro. Europass does not state its export formats on the page read, so test it before relying on it for the long term. Download everything before cancelling, keep a copy outside the builder, and note the date any refund window closes.

  • Export every resume and cover letter before cancelling
  • Look for a portable format such as DOCX or JSON
  • Find out what stays reachable on the free plan

What goes wrong most often when buying resume builders

  • Paying for a seven-day trial without noting that it renews on a four-week cycle at a higher price.
  • Judging a builder by its template gallery without downloading a sample file from the free plan.
  • Chasing a perfect ATS score from one tool and ignoring what a human reader sees on the page.
  • Leaving the only copy of a CV inside a paid account that then lapses or closes.
