Best Error Tracking Software in 2026

Error tracking software captures exceptions and crashes from running code, groups them by cause, and alerts the team that owns the fix.

This guide ranks twelve products on setup effort, the price once retention and users are added, how data can leave, and whether you can buy and run the product without a partner. Two are mobile-focused.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. How that works.

In short

What error tracking software does

Error tracking software collects exceptions, stack traces and crash reports from applications, groups duplicates, ties them to releases and users, and alerts developers, usually as a subscription metered by event volume.

How we ranked these

5 criteria, in order

In this order: setup effort, what it really costs, how your data comes back out, whether you can leave, and who each error tracking tool is built for. One rule sits on top of those tests: Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Why those five, and why there is no score out of ten, is on the how we work page.

#1 GlitchTip

Error tracking that accepts Sentry client SDKs, hosted or self-run

Ranked #1 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

The service takes Sentry SDK traffic for errors, performance, uptime checks and logs, and counts each error or transaction as one event, with ten uptime checks or log lines as one. Release and debug uploads count by megabyte.

The EU instance carries every plan, and a HIPAA-oriented hosting add-on exists for Large. Support access starts on Small. Discounted plans for non-profits and open source projects start at 5 dollars a month.

What stands out
  • Sentry SDK compatible
  • MIT licence
  • US or German hosting
Where it costs you
  • The vendor does not state its country or legal entity on the pricing, home or documentation pages we read.
  • Free events stop at 1,000 a month, and throttling begins at the plan limit.
Right for

Small teams wanting Sentry-compatible capture with a self-run or German-hosted option

Wrong for

Buyers wanting tracing, replays and AI triage in one product

Not stated by the vendorFree plan of 1,000 events a month; paid tiers by event volume, published

#2 Honeybadger

Error tracking, uptime checks and cron monitoring in one subscription

Ranked #2 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

Language pages cover Ruby, JavaScript, Python, Elixir and PHP, and error data can carry custom metadata such as a user email. Alerts can be routed by environment, hostname or exception class, and escalated by error frequency.

Insights adds logging at 50 MB a day on the free plan and 100 MB on paid plans. The vendor states SOC Type II certification and HIPAA and GDPR compliance.

What stands out
  • Cron monitoring
  • Status pages
  • Self-funded
Where it costs you
  • The developer plan limits retention to 15 days and one user.
  • Premium integrations such as Jira, PagerDuty and SMS sit on the paid plans.

#3 AppSignal

Error tracking inside an APM priced by request volume

Ranked #3 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingEurope

AppSignal sells error tracking as one module of an application monitor and meters requests handled, not errors captured, so a burst of exceptions does not raise the bill.

The free plan covers 30K requests with 5 days of retention. HIPAA support and long-term log storage are separate monthly add-ons, and a team wanting only a bug inbox pays for dashboards and host monitoring it may never open.

What stands out
  • Euro pricing
  • ISO 27001
  • Request-based
NetherlandsFree plan; paid plan by monthly request volume, published in euros or dollars; 30-day trial

#4 Airbrake

Published monthly tiers from 25,000 errors, with usage caps

Ranked #4 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

Five tiers run from 25,000 errors a month to 5 million, with 30 days of data retention and an optional yearly payment at ten percent off.

Setting a usage cap equal to the quota stops intake once it is reached, which protects the bill but discards later errors. Audit logs and spike forgiveness start on the Pro plan. The service is stated as SOC 2 Type II certified.

What stands out
  • Usage caps
  • SOC 2 Type II
  • Deploy tracking
Where it costs you
  • The cheapest plan allows only one user and one team.
  • Starting a trial requires a credit card, and overage bills on demand unless capped.
Right for

#5 Raygun

Crash reporting priced per 100,000 errors with unlimited members

Ranked #5 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Published pricingAsia-Pacific

Raygun sells crash reporting in Basic, Team and Business plans priced per block of errors, with unlimited apps and members on every plan. Third-party integrations and dashboards begin at Team, while SAML sign-on and a dedicated account manager wait on Business.

The 14-day trial needs no card. Raygun is a registered trademark of Raygun Limited, and monitoring of servers or browsers is billed as separate products.

What stands out
  • Unlimited members
  • Per-error plans
  • Spike protection
New Zealand14-day trial only; published per-error plans, cheaper when billed yearly

#6 Bugfender

Remote logs and crash reports from mobile and web app devices

Ranked #6 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierSelf-hostablePublished pricingEurope

Everything is organised around the device: logs, crashes, user feedback and custom device data attach to one customer handset. Plans differ by daily or monthly log lines and retention.

Pro adds log archiving to S3, API access and webhooks, while Premium adds a 99.95 percent dashboard uptime SLA, SAML and data locality. The terms name Beenario GmbH of Walldorf, Germany as owner.

What stands out
  • Remote logging
  • Mobile first
  • ISO 27001
Where it costs you
  • Log retention is 24 hours on the free plan and 7 days on Team.
  • The product focuses on client apps, so server exception tracking is outside its scope.

#7 Rollbar

Occurrence-based error monitoring with unlimited users and projects

Ranked #7 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere

Plans differ by monthly occurrences, replays and credits, and the free plan includes 5,000 occurrences and 1,000 replays. Overage budgets allow on-demand occurrences within a cap.

Advanced adds adaptive alerts, SCIM and the Analyze query API. A Terraform provider and REST API are listed on every plan. The 14-day trial gives Advanced features with 200K occurrences, per the pricing page.

#8 Better Stack

Error tracking billed per exception, compatible with Sentry SDKs

Ranked #8 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Published pricingElsewhere

Better Stack accepts data from Sentry SDKs and bills each exception at a listed rate, with 100,000 included and 90 days of storage.

Its own comparison with Sentry and Datadog assumes European data location and on-demand rates, so treat the saving as the vendor's calculation. On-call schedules and status pages come from the wider platform, which adds scope but also modules a bug-only team ignores.

What stands out
  • Sentry SDK compatible
  • Per-exception billing
  • On-call built in

#9 Embrace

Mobile and web user monitoring that includes crashes and exceptions

Ranked #9 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

The platform is built on OpenTelemetry and shows a play-by-play of each user session. ANR and thread profiling, network performance and webview performance are mobile-only, while Core Web Vitals are web-only.

Error logs are free to ingest, whereas info, warning and system logs are charged per gigabyte. Enterprise needs an annual contract and gives unlimited seats and 30 days of retention.

What stands out
  • Session pricing
  • OpenTelemetry
  • Mobile and web
Where it costs you
  • Sessions, not errors, set the bill, so heavy user traffic costs more even when crashes are rare.
  • Retention on the free plan is three days.

#11 Sentry

Error tracking with tracing, replays and AI debugging on the same account

Ranked #11 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierSelf-hostablePublished pricingNorth America

Sentry is the product others copy SDK compatibility from, and it stacks tracing, session replay, profiling, cron and uptime checks on top of errors. The developer plan is limited to one user.

Team adds unlimited users, while SAML and SCIM belong to Business, and the Seer AI debugging agent needs a separate subscription. The self-hosted repository is labelled fair-source, so the licence restricts some uses.

What stands out
  • Self-hosting option
  • Seer AI debugger
  • Wide SDK range

#12 Firebase Crashlytics

Crash reporting for Android, Apple, Flutter and Unity apps at no cost

Ranked #12 of 12 in Best Error Tracking Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

Crashlytics starts capturing crashes out of the box and groups them into issues by real-user impact. It forwards to Jira, Slack and BigQuery and appears in Android Studio's App Quality Insights window.

AI crash insights use Gemini. The Firebase pricing page separates no-cost Spark usage from Blaze pay as you go, but the Crashlytics page itself says there is no cost.

How to choose error tracking software

Error tracking software collects exceptions, stack traces and crash reports from applications, groups duplicates, ties them to releases and users, and alerts developers, usually as a subscription metered by event volume. The differences that matter are rarely in the feature list, so this is the order we would work through them.

  1. 01

Decide whether you need a published price

12 of the 12 tools here publish what they cost; the other 0 quote per organisation. The ones you can compare without a sales call: GlitchTip, Honeybadger, AppSignal, Airbrake, Raygun, Bugfender, Rollbar, Better Stack, Embrace, Bugsnag, Sentry, Firebase Crashlytics.

  2. 02

Decide how much the jurisdiction matters

These 12 vendors are established in 6 countries across 4 regions (North America 6, Elsewhere 3, Europe 2, Asia-Pacific 1). That decides whose disclosure law applies to what the vendor holds, wherever the servers are.

How error tracking software is metered

Vendors count different things, and the unit decides the bill. GlitchTip and Better Stack count events or exceptions, Airbrake sells a monthly error quota, Rollbar counts occurrences, Embrace bills sessions and AppSignal meters requests handled. A quiet but busy app can be cheap on error counts and costly on requests, while a bad deploy does the reverse.

Plan limits also differ in what happens at the ceiling: GlitchTip throttles, Airbrake can stop intake at a cap, and others bill on demand. A fair comparison takes last quarter's error volume, adds a bad-release month, and prices both in every candidate, because a plan that looks cheap in a calm month can double after one faulty deploy. Also note whether replays, logs and tracing draw on the same quota or are counted on their own meter.

  • Pull monthly error and request counts for your busiest and worst week.
  • Ask what happens at the quota: throttle, stop, or bill on demand.
  • Check whether replays, logs and tracing are metered separately.

Client-side, server-side and mobile coverage

Not every product watches the same code. Crashlytics and Embrace target mobile and web clients, Bugfender centres on device logs, and Honeybadger and AppSignal grew from server-side Ruby and Elixir work. Sentry, Bugsnag, Rollbar and Raygun cover several layers, though some split browser or server monitoring into separate priced products.

Several challengers accept Sentry client SDKs, including GlitchTip and Better Stack, which lowers the cost of trying them. List every runtime you ship and confirm an SDK or documented integration for each before you shortlist. A product that covers eight of your nine services still leaves the ninth unwatched, and that is usually where the next outage starts. Check mobile symbol handling too.

  • List each language, framework and mobile platform you run today.
  • Confirm symbol or source map upload for minified and native code.
  • Test one real error end to end, from throw to alert.

Retention, exit and where data lives

Retention sets how far back you can investigate, and it varies from days to months by plan. Bugfender keeps 24 hours of logs on its free plan, Honeybadger 15 days on the developer plan and AppSignal five days on free. Hosting location matters when you handle personal data: GlitchTip offers a German instance and self-hosting, Bugsnag and Bugfender list on-premises deployment on higher plans, and Sentry publishes a self-hosted repository under a fair-source label.

Ask how exports work, since stack traces often hold user identifiers, and check what the vendor does with your events after cancellation. Retention that looks generous on the pricing page can shrink once you move from the free plan to a lower paid one, so read the comparison table row by row.

  • Compare retention on the plan you would actually buy.
  • Ask whether an export of raw events exists and in which format.
  • Confirm hosting region and any data processing agreement.

Who owns the product and who supports it

Several products here belong to larger groups. Bugsnag sits in SmartBear's observability range, Crashlytics belongs to Firebase and Google, and Better Stack bundles errors with uptime, logs and on-call modules. Honeybadger calls itself self-funded, and GlitchTip and Raygun are single-purpose monitoring vendors. Ownership matters for roadmap, support access and contract terms.

Support levels also split by plan, for example priority support only on Honeybadger Business and Raygun Business. Read the plan table for who answers a production incident at night. A cheap plan with email-only support can cost more than a dearer one once a release fails outside office hours, and acquisitions can change both roadmap and plan names, so ask what the vendor commits to in writing.

  • Check which plan includes priority support and its response terms.
  • Ask whether the product is sold alone or only inside a bundle.
  • Read the termination clause for data deletion after cancellation.

What goes wrong most often when buying error tracking software

  • Choosing on the entry price alone, then discovering that unlimited users or longer retention sit two plans higher.
  • Counting only normal-week errors and ignoring the spike after a bad release, which decides the overage bill.
  • Assuming a mobile crash reporter such as Crashlytics also covers server code or the browser.
  • Skipping a real test with your own SDK, source maps and alert routing before signing a yearly plan.
