Best Statistical Software in 2026

Statistical software runs from free programs backed by universities to annual licences priced per user for quality and clinical work.

This guide ranks twelve products on the effort of the first ninety days, the real invoice once add-on modules are included, how analyses and data leave the tool, and whether you can buy and run it without a partner.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. How that works.

In short

What statistical software does

Statistical software is a program for describing data, testing hypotheses and fitting models such as regression and ANOVA, through menus, scripts or both, for research, quality control and business analysis.

How we ranked these

5 criteria, in order

In this order: setup effort, what it really costs, how your data comes back out, whether you can leave, and who each statistical tool is built for. One rule sits on top of those tests: Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Why those five, and why there is no score out of ten, is on the how we work page.

#1 Numiqo

Browser-based statistics calculator from Graz, formerly called DATAtab

Ranked #1 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Published pricingEurope

Numiqo is the former DATAtab, renamed with the same team and features, developed in Austria since 2019. Individual plans run from one month to three years and company flat licences are priced per year by headcount band.

Nothing is installed, and the calculator keeps data in the browser. Check the survey tool separately, since responses are stored on servers, and ask for the self-hosting option if policy requires it.

What stands out
  • Runs in the browser
  • Prepaid licence
  • Formerly DATAtab
Where it costs you
  • Licences expire at the end of the chosen period and must be bought again, which suits a project but needs a reminder for long studies.
  • Self-hosting and single sign-on are add-ons on request, and the Studio project feature is described as being in a testing phase.
Right for

Students, lecturers and small teams wanting browser-based tests and regression without installation

Wrong for

Teams that need a validated desktop package or scripted pipelines

AustriaPrepaid licences from one month to three years, prices published; company flat licences per year

#2 jamovi

Ranked #2 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Free tierOpen sourcePublished pricingAsia-Pacific

jamovi runs on the desktop for good and in a browser through jamovi Cloud. The site counts more than 70 library modules, and the about page gives Sydney, Australia as the citation location of an internationally developed project.

Teams can request private cloud hosting or an on-premise deployment marked beta. Priority cloud pricing shown on the site is only an estimate from your location until sign-in.

What stands out
  • Open source
  • Runs on R
  • Desktop and cloud
Where it costs you
  • Guest cloud sessions are not always available and have no unlimited session length or large-dataset allowance.
  • Support for non-paying users runs through the forum and documentation, with no stated service level.
Right for

Teaching groups and researchers wanting SPSS-style menus on R without licence cost

Wrong for

Regulated teams that need a vendor contract and signed support terms

AustraliaFree desktop edition; Cloud Guest plan free; Priority plan priced by region; Teams by quote

Ranked #3 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Free tierOpen sourcePublished pricingEurope

JASP describes itself as an open-source project supported by the University of Amsterdam, with contact details at its Psychological Methods department.

The FAQ cites multi-year, multi-million-euro grants and says no one can take the software away. Windows installs with a sandbox around R. Exit is plain because the source is public, though your results stay in JASP files until exported.

What stands out
  • Open source
  • University-backed
  • Windows, Mac, Linux
Where it costs you
  • The project depends on grant funding and an academic group, and the pages checked name no paid support contract.
  • The site names no legal entity, only the university department as contact, which procurement teams may have to accept case by case.
Right for

Researchers and students who want open, citable software and a stable licence

Wrong for

Companies that must buy support or an indemnity from a legal entity

NetherlandsFree, open source; funded by research grants

#4 NCSS

Independent statistics and graphics package with perpetual or subscription licences

Ranked #4 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

NCSS sells NCSS for analysis and graphics and PASS for sample size, each as subscription or perpetual, with separate academic, commercial and government price lists. Everything bought includes statistician support by phone or email.

The store lists over 165 analysis and 80 graphics procedures. Check which price list applies to your organisation before budgeting. Training videos are published on the vendor site, which shortens the first weeks.

What stands out
  • Perpetual licence
  • Phone and email support
  • Sample size sister product
Where it costs you
  • The 30-day trial forbids actual research, so you cannot start a live project during the test.
  • A perpetual licence covers NCSS 2026 only; upgrades need a new purchase or a subscription.
Right for

Small labs and consultants wanting an independent vendor, published prices and phone support

Wrong for

Buyers who need a cloud service or purchase-order invoicing outside North America

United States1-year to 3-year subscriptions or perpetual licence, prices published by customer type; 30-day trial

#5 Stata

Scriptable statistics package with versioned commands, favoured by economists and epidemiologists

Ranked #5 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

Stata states that its integrated versioning keeps old do-files and datasets working, and that actions in the menus can be saved as commands. Python can be embedded in Stata code.

The company lists fourteen disciplines, from biostatistics to public policy. Annual, 2-year and 3-year terms exist for SE and MP; multiyear is discounted but the page gives no figure, so ask for a written quote for team purchases.

What stands out
  • Do-file scripting
  • Windows, Mac, Linux
  • StataNow updates
Where it costs you
  • Stata/MP is sold in 2-core, 4-core and more-than-4-core versions, so price follows the hardware you run it on.
  • The single-user order page names no trial, so check evaluation options with sales before buying.
Right for

Economists, epidemiologists and survey analysts who value reproducible scripts over menus

Wrong for

Beginners who want a free tool or a pure point-and-click workflow

United StatesAnnual and multiyear licences, store prices published; network licences by quote

#6 Minitab

Quality-improvement statistics suite with design of experiments and control charts

Ranked #6 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

Minitab began at Penn State as a teaching tool and now sells Solution Center subscriptions, each per named user per year. R and Python can be integrated. The trial lasts 14 days, shorter than the earlier 30.

With several electronic subscriptions, every computer needs its own product key. Price the add-on modules and the plan tier before comparing it with cheaper general-purpose packages.

What stands out
  • Quality analytics
  • Design of experiments
  • Desktop and web
Where it costs you
  • Machine learning methods such as CART and Random Forests need the Predictive Analytics Module.
  • Student and instructor discounts are not available in the Minitab store and run through OnTheHub rentals.
Right for

Manufacturing and Six Sigma teams that need control charts, capability studies and designed experiments

Wrong for

Academic users who want a one-time purchase or an open-source tool

United StatesAnnual named-user subscription, prices published; 14-day trial; academic rental via OnTheHub

What stands out
  • Curve fitting
  • Lab science
  • Windows and Mac
Where it costs you
  • Personal licences are for individual use and cannot be shared between colleagues.
  • The perpetual licence gets no upgrades and no guaranteed future operating system support, per the vendor's own page.
Right for

Biology and pharmacology labs that need curve fitting and clean figures without coding

Wrong for

Data scientists who need scripting, machine learning or very large datasets

United StatesPersonal and group subscriptions, prices published; perpetual licence; 30-day trial

#8 OriginPro

Graphing and analysis software with peak fitting and a Pro statistics tier

What stands out
  • Peak fitting
  • Node-locked or network
  • Python and LabTalk
Where it costs you
  • Prices are not on the pricing page, and the store is limited to the US and Canada, so others must contact sales.
  • Many statistical tests are marked as OriginPro-only, so the base Origin tier is a graphing tool first.
Right for

Engineers and physical scientists who graph spectra and fit peaks and want some statistics

Wrong for

Statisticians who need survey methods, mixed models or a quick published price

United StatesQuoted per licence type and user category; online store for the US and Canada only

#9 XLSTAT

Excel add-in with 300 statistical tools, now sold by Lumivero

Ranked #9 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestNorth America

XLSTAT now sits in Lumivero's research portfolio beside NVivo and ATLAS.ti. Essentials has over 100 tools and Advanced the full set, with an AI assistant added to Advanced.

What stands out
  • Excel add-in
  • Windows and Mac
  • Annual plans
Where it costs you
  • It runs inside Microsoft Excel, so data beyond native Excel limits needs the import wizard and a 64-bit Office.
  • Package prices were not visible in the server-rendered shop text, and add-ons carry their own annual fees.
Right for

Analysts who already live in Excel and want tests and multivariate methods there

Wrong for

Teams that need scripting or a stand-alone package

United StatesAnnual subscription in three packages with extra add-ons sold separately; 14-day trial

#10 JMP

Interactive statistics and design-of-experiments tool for scientists and engineers

What stands out
  • Interactive graphics
  • Design of experiments
  • SAS subsidiary
Where it costs you
  • Subscriptions renew automatically and a cancellation does not produce a partial refund.
  • Predictive modelling and machine learning belong to the more expensive JMP Pro, not base JMP.
Right for

Engineers and scientists who explore data visually and design experiments

Wrong for

Buyers who want a perpetual licence or an open-source tool

United StatesAnnual per-user subscriptions, store prices published; 30-day trial; JMP Live by quote

#11 IBM SPSS Statistics

Long-established statistics package sold as a base plan plus paid add-ons

Ranked #11 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

IBM prices SPSS Statistics per authorized user and does not mention concurrent licensing on the page we read. Campus editions give an institution one licence with no price shown, and student licences go through authorised vendors at academic rates.

Purchasing an add-on on IBM.com can bring a discount of 30 percent on quarterly or 45 percent on annual plans. Always request the complete add-on list in writing.

What stands out
  • Subscription base
  • Add-on modules
  • Campus editions
Where it costs you
  • Custom tables, forecasting and complex sampling are separate add-ons, each with its own price.
  • Subscriptions renew at the then-current price after the first year, and the trial length is not stated on the page.
Right for

University departments and market-research teams already trained on SPSS menus and syntax

Wrong for

Budget-limited users who want one all-in price or open tools

United StatesSubscription from a published starting price per user, add-ons extra; perpetual licence quoted

#12 SAS Viya

Analytics and AI platform for governed enterprise modelling, quoted per organisation

Ranked #12 of 12 in Best Statistical Software in 2026.

Self-hostablePricing on requestNorth America

The vendor page lists cloud, hybrid and on-premises deployment, and a 14-day trial. Open-source languages work alongside SAS programs.

Because pricing is custom, test the real invoice with your user count and data volume before comparing it with desktop packages. Plan implementation hours too, since a platform of this breadth is a larger rollout than installing a desktop program.

What stands out
  • Enterprise platform
  • Cloud or on-premises
  • Python and R support
Where it costs you
  • Pricing is not shown and needs a quote through sales or the value calculator.
  • The platform spans data, governance and model operations, so a team that only wants statistics buys and learns more than it uses.
Right for

Large organisations that need governed models, auditability and deployment options on several clouds

Wrong for

Individual researchers and small teams that need quick, priced statistics

United StatesQuoted per organisation; 14-day trial

How to choose statistical software

Statistical software is a program for describing data, testing hypotheses and fitting models such as regression and ANOVA, through menus, scripts or both, for research, quality control and business analysis. The differences that matter are rarely in the feature list, so this is the order we would work through them.

  1. 01

Decide whether you need a published price

9 of the 12 tools here publish what they cost; the other 3 quote per organisation. The ones you can compare without a sales call: Numiqo, jamovi, JASP, NCSS, Stata, Minitab, GraphPad Prism, JMP, IBM SPSS Statistics.

  2. 02

Decide how much the jurisdiction matters

These 12 vendors are established in 4 countries across 3 regions (North America 9, Europe 2, Asia-Pacific 1). That decides whose disclosure law applies to what the vendor holds, wherever the servers are.

  3. 03

Consider whether you want the source

2 of these are open source: jamovi, JASP. Hosting one yourself trades a subscription for maintenance.

Choosing statistical software by who will run the analysis

Start with the person at the keyboard. jamovi, JASP and Numiqo offer menus and show results as you click, which suits teaching and occasional analysts. Stata is built around scripts called do-files, and its site says old scripts keep running because of integrated versioning, so it rewards people who repeat analyses.

Minitab and JMP target engineers who run control charts and designed experiments, while GraphPad Prism targets lab scientists who fit curves. SAS Viya is a platform for organisations that govern models centrally. Give two real datasets from your own work to each candidate and note how long a colleague needs to produce the first table without help. A quick test of a method you use every month is worth more than any feature list.

  • Run one analysis from your last project in each trial
  • Count the hours a new colleague needs for a first result
  • Check whether the methods you repeat monthly are in the base tier

What statistical software costs once modules are added

Licence models differ more than list prices suggest. jamovi and JASP carry no licence fee, Numiqo sells prepaid periods, and Minitab, JMP and GraphPad Prism sell annual subscriptions. NCSS offers a subscription or a perpetual licence limited to one version, and IBM SPSS Statistics prices a base plan with add-ons for custom tables, forecasting and complex sampling.

XLSTAT sells specialist add-ons separately, and JMP puts machine learning in JMP Pro. OriginPro and SAS Viya are quoted. Build a three-year table for your actual user count that includes the modules your methods need, the renewal rule and any maintenance fee. Ask each vendor to confirm in writing which methods sit in which tier.

  • List the modules your methods require and price each
  • Check renewal terms and whether the price rises after year one
  • Get the three-year total in writing for your user count

Reproducibility and how analyses leave the tool

An analysis you cannot rerun is a liability at audit time. Stata saves commands and promises that old scripts run, jamovi shows the R syntax behind every click and saves data and results in one file, and JMP can be scripted and connects to R, Python, MATLAB and SAS.

Minitab integrates with R and Python, and OriginPro adds LabTalk, OriginC, Python and an R console. A menu-only workflow in a closed format ties your archive to a licence, so export a finished analysis and its data to a neutral format such as CSV before you commit. For open tools such as JASP, the public source reduces the risk that a file format disappears.

  • Export one finished analysis and open it in a second program
  • Check that every menu action can be saved as a script
  • Confirm what happens to project files when a subscription lapses

Trials, academic rates and licence limits

Trials differ in length and in what they allow. The NCSS trial lasts 30 days and may not be used on actual research, GraphPad Prism and JMP give 30 days, and Minitab, XLSTAT and SAS Viya give 14. IBM SPSS Statistics offers a trial without stating its length, and the Stata order page names none.

Academic pricing varies as well: XLSTAT gives students 20 percent off, JMP Student Edition is free for students and educators, OriginPro has a six-month Learning Edition, and Minitab routes discounts through OnTheHub. Check also whether a personal licence may be shared, since GraphPad Prism forbids it, and whether purchase orders are accepted where you are, since NCSS limits them to the USA and Canada.

  • Note the trial length and whether real work is allowed
  • Ask whether the academic rate covers your use
  • Check purchase order and invoice options in your country

What goes wrong most often when buying statistical software

  • Comparing list prices for a base plan and ignoring the add-on modules the methods actually need.
  • Choosing a tool by brand familiarity instead of testing one real dataset from your own work.
  • Buying a perpetual licence without noting that upgrades and new operating systems may require another purchase.
  • Keeping the only copy of an analysis inside a proprietary project file with no exported script or data.
