Best Site Search Software in 2026

Site search software turns a visitor's typed words into a ranked list of pages or products on your own site.

The eleven tools here run from open-source engines you wire up yourself to retail suites sold by quote. We rank them on setup effort, price at working traffic, how data leaves, and dependence on a partner.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. How that works.

In short

What site search software does

Site search software indexes the pages, products or documents of one website and returns ranked, typo-tolerant results as visitors type, with filters, synonyms, rules and analytics managed by the owner.

How we ranked these

5 criteria, in order

In this order: setup effort, what it really costs, how your data comes back out, whether you can leave, and who each site search tool is built for. One rule sits on top of those tests: Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Why those five, and why there is no score out of ten, is on the how we work page.

#1 Meilisearch

Open-source search engine from Paris, run yourself or rented as cloud

Ranked #1 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Open sourceSelf-hostablePublished pricingEurope

Cloud bills either by usage, where a base plan covers 100K documents and 50K searches, or by resource, an instance sized by RAM and disk, and the estimator on the pricing page shows both.

The product menu lists keyword, vector, hybrid, federated, multimodal and faceted search. The same engine runs on your own server at no licence cost, which gives a way out of Cloud, though operations then become your job.

What stands out
  • Open source (MIT)
  • Self-hosted or Cloud
  • Paris, France
Where it costs you
  • Personalization, dynamic search rules and merchandising sit under the Enterprise plan, so a shop team without developers receives an engine, not a merchandising console.
  • Self-hosting leaves updates, backups and scaling with you, as the pricing page itself states.
Right for

Developer teams that want a visible price and the option to run it themselves

Wrong for

Teams expecting retail merchandising screens in the entry plan

FranceOpen source engine to self-host; Cloud billed by usage or by instance, published; 14-day trial

#2 Typesense

Open-source in-memory engine with hourly dedicated clusters and no per-search charges

Ranked #2 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Open sourceSelf-hostablePublished pricingNorth America

Typesense appeals when search quality for typed queries matters as much as nearest-neighbour recall. The documentation covers importing your own embeddings, plus auto-embedding with built-in models, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI or other compatible APIs.

Cloud pricing follows the memory you provision, with no limit on records or operations. The in-memory design is quick, and it means collection size maps straight to RAM cost.

What stands out
  • GPL v3 open source
  • Dedicated clusters
  • No per-search charges
Where it costs you
  • The index is held in memory, so large collections need large and costly clusters
  • GPL-3.0 licensing may constrain embedding the server inside distributed products
Right for

Product search where typed queries and vectors must work together

Wrong for

Archives of hundreds of millions of vectors that must stay cheap

United StatesOpen source (GPL v3) to self-host; Typesense Cloud billed by the hour per dedicated cluster, published

#3 AddSearch

Finnish hosted site search with keyword plans and optional AI answers

Ranked #3 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Published pricingEurope

Keyword Search covers faceted and scoped search, ranking management, filters, synonyms and analytics. AI Answers quote sources from your own content and let you control which pages the model may use.

Several content sources can feed one search box, and indexing methods cover legacy and modern CMS alike. A 14-day trial needs no developer, and the pricing page says every plan has standard support by email and live chat.

What stands out
  • Keyword plus AI answers
  • Espoo, Finland
  • Works with any CMS
Where it costs you
  • Core and Growth carry no uptime guarantee, so the cheapest keyword tiers come without an availability commitment.
  • AI Conversations and the combined Experience plan are priced as Custom, so the full product cannot be costed from the site.
Right for

Content-heavy sites, such as universities or associations, that need hosted search across any CMS

Wrong for

Buyers who need every plan to include an uptime guarantee

FinlandKeyword search plans at a published monthly rate billed annually; AI answers priced separately; 14-day trial

#4 Doofinder

Spanish ecommerce search billed by monthly request volume per product

Ranked #4 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Published pricingEurope

Every plan carries Search, Recommendations and Quiz Maker, each with its own request allowance. Basic adds voice search, synonyms, banners and daily indexing. Pro adds AI guided search, visual tagging and multi-index scheduling.

Advanced adds one-to-one personalization, visual search, category merchandising and a link to ChatGPT or Claude. An AI Assistant add-on for Pro and above is priced on request.

What stands out
  • Request-based plans
  • Shopify and WooCommerce
  • Madrid, Spain
Where it costs you
  • Request limits apply per product (Search, Recommendations, Quiz), so a busy store can hit the Basic ceiling through indexing and autocomplete alone.
  • The site offers no request packs inside a plan, so passing a tier means a conversation rather than a top-up.
Right for

Small and mid-size online shops on Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop wanting plug-and-play search

Wrong for

Teams that need a flat fee unrelated to request counts

SpainThree published plans by request volume, monthly or annual; Enterprise on request; trial without a card

#5 Searchanise

Storefront search and filter app for Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento stores

Ranked #5 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

The app covers instant search, navigation filters, merchandising and promotions, analytics, recommendations and voice search across the platforms it lists: Shopify, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento, CS-Cart, Wix and custom builds.

Real-time sync reads Shopify through webhooks every two minutes plus API checks every ten. Support runs by email and live chat, and the cheapest paid tier lists only 1,500 products, so a growing shop leaves it early.

What stands out
  • Seven plans
  • Shopify app
  • Priced by product count
Where it costs you
  • The plan table counts products with Shopify's Active status and Online Store channel, so pricing for other platforms is not shown on the page checked.
  • Pricing steps by catalogue size, so a store that adds products moves up a tier even when search traffic stays flat.
Right for

Shopify merchants with catalogues under a few thousand products wanting a monthly app

Wrong for

Sites needing document or help-centre search beyond a product catalogue

United StatesSeven published monthly plans by catalogue size, starting with a free plan; 14-day trial with all features

#6 HawkSearch

Product search with published monthly plans and implementation options

Ranked #6 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

The pricing page lists four implementation steps handled by HawkSearch staff: account configuration, data import and indexing, deployment of the Rapid UI framework with search bar, results and recommendation examples, and remote training with unlimited seats.

Dev, test and production environments belong to the development row. Product pages describe merchandising without IT, personalization and AI shopping assistants, so a small team can run ranking changes without a developer ticket.

What stands out
  • B2B catalogues
  • Core and Premium plans
  • Bridgeline Digital
Where it costs you
  • Core covers 50,000 API calls and 10,000 records, so mid-size catalogues reach Premium or a quote quickly.
  • Visual, concept and hybrid search and the web crawler appear as add-ons, so the entry rate omits them.
Right for

B2B and parts catalogues where part numbers, units of measure and variants matter

Wrong for

Small blogs or documentation sites that need cheap search

United StatesCore and Premium published monthly with usage included; Enterprise on request

#7 Athos Commerce

Merged Searchspring and Klevu business selling onsite search by quote

Ranked #7 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestNorth America

Onsite Discovery covers search, merchandising and personalization. Offsite Discovery covers product feed management for Google Shopping, Amazon, eBay and social channels. Complete Discovery combines both under one contract with a single analytics dashboard and console.

Conversational, channel and GEO assistants are separate add-ons, also priced on request, and the standalone Onsite or Offsite plans can be upgraded to the full platform later, which lets a buyer start with one half only.

What stands out
  • Searchspring and Klevu merged
  • Quote-only pricing
  • San Antonio, Texas
Where it costs you
  • No price appears on the site, so budgeting starts with a sales conversation.
  • The news page describes a staged rollout toward one platform, so what a new buyer receives may change during the transition.
Right for

Mid-size online retailers wanting search, merchandising and product feeds under one contract

Wrong for

Teams that need a price before talking to a salesperson

United StatesOnsite, Offsite and Complete plans, all quoted on request; annual plans

#8 Algolia

Hosted search API metered by requests and records, with a free plan

Ranked #8 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

The plans are Free, Grow, Grow Plus and Elevate. Grow includes keyword search and browse, query suggestions, ten rules per index, manual synonyms, 30 days of analytics and US, UK and EU hosting; Grow Plus raises rules to 10,000 per index and analytics retention to 90 days.

The site lists more than 70 data centres in 17 regions, and the free plan includes 5K recommendation requests.

What stands out
  • Free plan
  • Per-request pricing
  • US, UK and EU hosting
Where it costs you
  • Search requests and records are metered separately, so a site with many records and heavy autocomplete traffic pays on both axes.
  • NeuralSearch and the highest availability level are limited to Elevate, which is priced per contract.
Right for

Developer teams building custom search interfaces who accept metered usage billing

Wrong for

Budget owners who need a fixed annual figure before traffic is known

United StatesFree plan; Grow and Grow Plus billed per search request and record, published; Elevate custom

#9 Elasticsearch

Open-source search datastore you assemble into site search yourself

Ranked #9 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Open sourceSelf-hostablePricing on requestEurope

Elasticsearch fits when full-text relevance is already a requirement. The company's own page positions it as a vector database, and the serverless price list separates ingest, search, machine-learning compute, storage and egress, with a 50 GB allowance for vector profiles.

The repository is triple-licensed, with part under the Elastic License 2.0 alone. Expect a bigger learning curve and a harder cost forecast than the single-purpose engines above.

What stands out
  • AGPL open source
  • Serverless, hosted or self-managed
  • Connectors and crawler
Where it costs you
  • Serverless is billed on several meters at once: ingest, search, storage and egress
  • Some code in the x-pack folder carries only the Elastic License 2.0
Right for

Organisations that need keyword, filter and vector search in a single engine

Wrong for

Small teams who only want a simple vector index

NetherlandsAGPL open source to self-host; Elastic Cloud serverless or hosted by usage, trial offered

#10 Constructor

Ecommerce discovery platform sold by demo, covering search, browse and recommendations

Ranked #10 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestNorth America

The product pages group onsite experiences (search and autosuggest, browse, recommendations, retail media, quizzes, collections), offsite channels such as email and SMS, and insight tools: a merchant intelligence agent, GenAI attribute enrichment and merchandiser controls with experiments.

Industry pages cover grocery, fashion, furniture and department stores. Two shopping agents answer product questions and help shoppers choose, and the company says its platform is built for retailers, so a site without a catalogue has little use for it.

What stands out
  • Retail focus
  • Demo-only pricing
  • Behavioural data
Where it costs you
  • No price or plan appears on the pages checked, so cost is known only after a demo.
  • The scope is retail: B2C, B2B, fashion, grocery and furniture pages, with no documentation-search use case listed.
Right for

Retailers with large catalogues and a merchandising team wanting behaviour-driven ranking

Wrong for

Publishers or software firms searching articles and documentation

United StatesDemo on request; the site pages checked show no price list

#11 Coveo

Enterprise relevance platform with entitlement-based pricing and commerce add-ons

Ranked #11 of 11 in Best Site Search Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestNorth America

The base platform lists a unified index with connectors, document-level security, hybrid search, query pipeline management, A/B testing, reporting and Snowflake data sharing. Commerce adds a merchandising hub for search and listings, recommendations and facets, plus product ranking insights.

Conversational product discovery, deep learning models and product badging are add-ons, and Coveo for Agentforce appears among the generative features, so a buyer should price those modules before assuming the base package is enough.

What stands out
  • Montreal, Canada
  • Service, website and commerce
  • Query-unit pricing
Where it costs you
  • Add-ons for generative answering, multi-region hosting and enhanced security are priced separately, so the base unit is not the price.
  • The pricing page offers a request form and ROI calculator but no list price, so a small site cannot judge cost in advance.
Right for

Large organisations searching many content systems with permissions, for service or commerce

Wrong for

Small sites wanting to start alone in an afternoon

CanadaQuoted per organisation; units of 100k queries a month, add-ons extra

How to choose site search software

Site search software indexes the pages, products or documents of one website and returns ranked, typo-tolerant results as visitors type, with filters, synonyms, rules and analytics managed by the owner. The differences that matter are rarely in the feature list, so this is the order we would work through them.

  1. 01

Decide whether you need a published price

7 of the 11 tools here publish what they cost; the other 4 quote per organisation. The ones you can compare without a sales call: Meilisearch, Typesense, AddSearch, Doofinder, Searchanise, HawkSearch, Algolia.

  2. 02

Decide how much the jurisdiction matters

These 11 vendors are established in 6 countries across 2 regions (North America 7, Europe 4). That decides whose disclosure law applies to what the vendor holds, wherever the servers are.

  3. 03

Consider whether you want the source

3 of these are open source: Meilisearch, Typesense, Elasticsearch. Hosting one yourself trades a subscription for maintenance.

Choose between an engine you wire up and a suite you buy

Site search splits into two buying routes. Meilisearch, Typesense and Elasticsearch are engines: you or a partner build the search box, ranking rules and filters, and the price is infrastructure or usage. Constructor, Athos Commerce and HawkSearch are retail suites with merchandising screens, feeds and implementation help, sold by quote or from a monthly rate.

Neither is better in the abstract. A team with two developers and a documentation site gets more from an engine, while a shop whose merchandisers change rankings daily needs the suite's controls. Decide who will tune relevance after launch, because that person's skills decide the route, not the feature list, and write that name into the project plan before any trial starts.

  • Name the person who will adjust ranking rules each month.
  • List which interface parts you must build with an engine: search box, filters, result pages.
  • Ask suites what is configured for you and what stays a ticket.

Read what the pricing meter counts

Every vendor meters something different, and the unit decides your bill. Algolia charges per 1K search requests and per 1K records. Doofinder counts requests per product, including indexing runs and crawled pages. Typesense bills dedicated clusters by the hour for memory, with no per-search charge. Searchanise tiers by active product count. Coveo sells units of 100k queries a month.

A site with many records and little traffic suits Typesense or Searchanise differently than a small catalogue with heavy autocomplete use. Take your last three months of search logs and price them against each meter before comparing headline rates, since a low entry price with an expensive meter can end up costing more than a higher flat tier.

  • Export monthly searches, record counts and autocomplete keystrokes from your logs.
  • Check whether indexing and crawling consume allowance, as at Doofinder.
  • Ask what happens at the ceiling: overage rate, tier jump or sales call.

Treat AI answers and assistants as separate purchases

Keyword search and generative features are priced apart almost everywhere. AddSearch lists keyword search from a published monthly rate, AI Answers from a much higher tier and AI Conversations as custom. Athos Commerce sells its conversational, channel and GEO assistants as quoted add-ons. HawkSearch lists Smart Response, visual, concept and hybrid search as add-ons, and Doofinder puts its AI Assistant above the Basic plan.

If your visitors mostly type product names, keyword relevance and synonyms deliver most of the value, so price the plain search first and add generative layers only after the logs show questions that keyword matching misses, and ask each vendor to show answers on your own content rather than on a demo catalogue.

  • Get the price of keyword search alone, then each AI layer separately.
  • Check which AI features need a higher plan or an add-on.
  • Test answers against your own content for wrong or unsourced replies.

Plan the first ninety days and the exit

Setup time differs more than licence price. AddSearch quotes two to four weeks for its full AI experience, HawkSearch staff handle configuration, data import and training, and Meilisearch Cloud or Typesense Cloud can start from a trial with your own developer.

Exit is the other half: Meilisearch and Typesense run on your own servers under open-source licences, so leaving a cloud plan does not mean leaving the engine, while a quoted suite such as Coveo or Athos Commerce depends on contract terms. Before signing, ask how your records and synonym lists leave the system and in which format, and keep a copy of the source data outside any vendor so a switch never depends on one export.

  • Ask for a written setup plan with hours on your side.
  • Ask how rules, synonyms and analytics export, and in which format.
  • Check contract length: Athos Commerce standalone plans are annual.

What goes wrong most often when buying site search software

  • Choosing on the demo of a retail suite without pricing your real search volume against the vendor's meter.
  • Counting only keyword search in the budget and discovering later that AI answers, visual search or the web crawler are separate add-ons.
  • Picking an engine such as Elasticsearch or Meilisearch for a team that has no developer to build the search interface and ranking screens.
  • Ignoring that Doofinder and Algolia meter indexing, crawling and autocomplete traffic in addition to visible searches.

Frequently asked questions

8 answers
What is the best site search software in 2026?

Meilisearch leads our ranking of 11. Meilisearch is developed by Meili SAS in Paris. Its code carries the MIT licence, except Enterprise Edition parts under the Business Source Licence 1.1.

Cloud begins with a 14-day trial and bills by usage or by instance, so a small site can read the cost off the pricing page. SSO, SAML, dedicated resources, personalization and dynamic ranking rules belong to the custom-priced Enterprise plan.

Which site search tools publish their pricing?

7 of the 11, with the pricing model each one publishes:

  • Meilisearch: Open source engine to self-host; Cloud billed by usage or by instance, published; 14-day trial.
  • Typesense: Open source (GPL v3) to self-host; Typesense Cloud billed by the hour per dedicated cluster, published.
  • AddSearch: Keyword search plans at a published monthly rate billed annually; AI answers priced separately; 14-day trial.
  • Doofinder: Three published plans by request volume, monthly or annual; Enterprise on request; trial without a card.
  • Searchanise: Seven published monthly plans by catalogue size, starting with a free plan; 14-day trial with all features.
  • HawkSearch: Core and Premium published monthly with usage included; Enterprise on request.
  • Algolia: Free plan; Grow and Grow Plus billed per search request and record, published; Elevate custom.

The other 4 quote per organisation.

Is there a free site search tool?

Searchanise, Algolia offer a free tier or a free self-hosted edition.

Where are these site search software vendors established?

In 6 countries across 2 regions: North America 7, Europe 4.

  • Meilisearch: France.
  • Typesense: United States.
  • AddSearch: Finland.
  • Doofinder: Spain.
  • Searchanise: United States.
  • HawkSearch: United States.
  • Athos Commerce: United States.
  • Algolia: United States.
  • Elasticsearch: Netherlands.
  • Constructor: United States.
  • Coveo: Canada.
Which site search tools are open source?

Meilisearch, Typesense, Elasticsearch.

Which site search tools can you host yourself?

Meilisearch, Typesense, Elasticsearch. The other 8 are hosted by the vendor only.

What should you use instead of Meilisearch?

Typesense and AddSearch are the next two on this page. Typesense is for Product search where typed queries and vectors must work together; AddSearch is for Content-heavy sites, such as universities or associations, that need hosted search across any CMS.

Who should not buy Meilisearch?

Teams expecting retail merchandising screens in the entry plan. Personalization, dynamic search rules and merchandising sit under the Enterprise plan, so a shop team without developers receives an engine, not a merchandising console..
