Algolia alternatives: 11 site search tools compared

Algolia alternatives are sought by teams whose search bill grows with traffic and catalogue size, and by teams that want to host the engine themselves or pay a fixed monthly figure. Some move to an open-source engine they run, some to a plugin priced by plan, and some to a retail suite sold by quote.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Algolia in our site search software ranking are Typesense, Meilisearch and Elasticsearch. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Typesense if you want a flat cluster cost instead of per-request billing and have developers to run it. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Site Search Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Algolia.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Algolia

#8 of 12 in our site search software ranking

  • Pricing: Free plan; Grow and Grow Plus billed per search request and record, published; Elevate custom
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Developer teams building custom search interfaces who accept metered usage billing
  • Not for: Budget owners who need a fixed annual figure before traffic is known
01

Why buyers look past Algolia

  1. 01

    Two meters on one bill

Algolia's pricing page bills search requests and records separately. Grow includes 10K requests a month and 100K records, then charges $0.50 per additional 1K requests and $0.40 per additional 1K records. A site with a large catalogue and heavy autocomplete traffic pays on both axes, and the monthly figure moves with traffic.

  2. 02

AI features sit on the dearer tiers

Grow Plus raises the request rate to $1.75 per additional 1K and adds AI synonyms, AI ranking, advanced personalization and rules up to 10,000 per index. NeuralSearch, real-time personalization and 99.99% availability appear only under Elevate, which shows no price and sends buyers to a demo.

  3. 03

A managed service you cannot run yourself

Algolia is a hosted service. It offers US, UK and EU hosting locations and more than 70 data centres in 17 regions, but there is no edition to install on your own servers. Teams that need the engine inside their own infrastructure, or want a way out that does not depend on a vendor contract, look elsewhere.

What each one does differently

Typesense

United States · Open source (GPL v3) to self-host; Typesense Cloud billed by the hour per dedicated cluster, published

Typesense is open source under GPL-3.0, so a team can run it on its own servers, and Typesense Cloud rents a dedicated cluster sized by memory and vCPUs with no limit on records or operations. The pricing page runs a migration offer aimed at Algolia customers. It is an engine to wire up, with no merchandising console for shop teams.

Switch from Algolia if you want a flat cluster cost instead of per-request billing and have developers to run it.

Typesense, #2 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Meilisearch

France · Open source engine to self-host; Cloud billed by usage or by instance, published; 14-day trial

Meilisearch is open source under the MIT licence, with a company registered in Paris. Cloud starts at $20 a month with a 14-day trial and is billed by usage or by instance. Analytics, merchandising and personalization are listed under the Enterprise plan, and SSO and SOC 2 are quoted there too.

Switch from Algolia if you want a French vendor and a small entry price, and can build the search interface yourself.

Meilisearch, #1 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Elasticsearch

Netherlands · AGPL open source to self-host; Elastic Cloud serverless or hosted by usage, trial offered

Elasticsearch is a general search and analytics datastore rather than a site-search product. Elastic offers serverless and hosted cloud billed by usage, and a self-managed download, with AGPLv3 added in September 2024 as a licence option beside SSPL and the Elastic License. You assemble relevance, autocomplete and the front end yourself.

Switch from Algolia if search is one of several data workloads and an engineering team will own the cluster.

Elasticsearch, #9 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

AddSearch

Finland · Keyword search plans at a published monthly rate billed annually; AI answers priced separately; 14-day trial

AddSearch is run by AddSearch Oy of Espoo, Finland. Keyword search starts from $119 a month billed annually, AI Answers from $700 a month, and a 14-day trial is offered. It targets content websites, with indexing from a crawler so any CMS works, and is less suited to deep product merchandising.

Switch from Algolia if your site is content, not a catalogue, and you want a fixed monthly plan from a Finnish company.

AddSearch, #3 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Doofinder

Spain · Three published plans by request volume, monthly or annual; Enterprise on request; trial without a card

Doofinder S.L. of Madrid sells three published plans at €49, €149 and €349 a month (10% less billed annually), counted in 10K, 150K and 400K requests for each of search, recommendations and quiz. Plugins target shop platforms. Enterprise is quoted, and developer control is narrower than a raw API.

Switch from Algolia if an online shop wants request bands it can budget in euros and a plug-in install.

Doofinder, #4 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Searchanise

United States · Seven published monthly plans by catalogue size, starting with a free plan; 14-day trial with all features

Searchanise prices by catalogue size, not by query: a free plan up to 25 products, then $19, $39 and $89 a month for 1,500, 7,500 and 15,000 products, with larger tiers above. Its platform menu lists Shopify and BigCommerce among others, so it is built for hosted shops, not custom sites.

Switch from Algolia if you run a small Shopify-type store and want search priced by product count.

Searchanise, #5 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

HawkSearch

United States · Core and Premium published monthly with usage included; Enterprise on request

HawkSearch, whose terms come from Bridgeline Digital, publishes Core at $500 a month for 50,000 API calls and 10,000 records, and Premium at $850 for 100,000 calls and 25,000 records. Visual, concept and hybrid search and the web crawler are add-ons. Enterprise is quoted, and the entry price is higher than most plugin tools.

Switch from Algolia if you sell a large B2B catalogue and want implementation done by the vendor at a known monthly rate.

HawkSearch, #6 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Athos Commerce

United States · Onsite, Offsite and Complete plans, all quoted on request; annual plans

Athos Commerce is the company formed from Searchspring, Klevu and Intelligent Reach, so those brands are now one vendor. It sells Onsite, Offsite and Complete plans, all quoted on request on annual terms, and adds product-feed management for marketplaces. It is a retail suite, not a developer API.

Switch from Algolia if a retailer wants search, merchandising and feed syndication from one contract.

Athos Commerce, #7 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Constructor

United States · Demo on request; the site pages checked show no price list

Constructor is built for ecommerce only, with search, browse, recommendations, quizzes and retail media, plus shopping agents. Its site shows a demo request and no price list. It is a poor match for a documentation or content site, which Algolia can serve with its free plan.

Switch from Algolia if you are a large retailer that wants managed product discovery and will run A/B tests with the vendor.

Constructor, #10 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Coveo

Canada · Quoted per organisation; units of 100k queries a month, add-ons extra

Coveo indexes many content systems into one secured index and prices by entitlement for service and websites, by seat for workplace search, and modularly for commerce. Generative answering and multi-region hosting are add-ons. Pricing is on request, and the platform is sized for large organisations.

Switch from Algolia if you must search several systems with document-level permissions, for support or commerce.

Coveo, #11 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

Bloomreach

Not stated by the vendor · No public rate card; starts at $60K a year for smaller brands, billed annually; AI agents priced separately

Bloomreach Ecommerce Search has no public rate card. The pricing page says it starts at $60K a year for smaller brands, billed annually, with AI agents priced separately, and no free trial. It offers a no-contract ROI estimate instead. It is the dearest route here and is aimed at retail only.

Switch from Algolia if a retailer wants a vendor-run search and personalization programme and can commit to an annual contract.

Bloomreach, #12 of 12 in our site search software ranking →

04

When Algolia is still the right choice

Algolia remains the right choice for a development team that wants a fast hosted API with a free plan to start, UI components, and hosting in the US, UK or EU under one contract. If traffic is modest, the metered bill is small, and nobody wants to operate an engine, a self-hosted tool trades a known invoice for staffing time. Pricing becomes the problem only when requests and records grow together, and that is the point to model against the alternatives.

05

What moving off Algolia involves

  1. 01

Rules, synonyms and ranking are rebuilt

Algolia's rules, synonyms, replicas and personalization settings are stored in its own index configuration. Export what the API gives you, then recreate rules and synonyms in the new tool. Plan for a period of tuning, since ranking will not match on the first day.

  2. 02

Front-end code is the larger job

Algolia ships its own UI components and autocomplete library. Moving to Typesense or Meilisearch means swapping the client library, and moving to a shop plugin means replacing the search box altogether. Run both engines in parallel on a test route and compare result lists for your top queries before cutting over.

Questions about replacing Algolia

6 answers
What is the closest open-source alternative to Algolia?

Typesense and Meilisearch are the two engines in our ranking built for the same job. Typesense is GPL-3.0 and Meilisearch is MIT. Both can be self-hosted and both sell a managed cloud, so the main question is who runs the servers.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Algolia?

On published prices, Meilisearch Cloud starts at $20 a month, Searchanise has a free plan up to 25 products and Doofinder starts at €49 a month.

Whether any of them is cheaper depends on your records, traffic and the features you need, so price a normal month on each.

Which Algolia alternative is hosted in Europe?

Meilisearch has its registered office in Paris, AddSearch is a Finnish company, Doofinder is Spanish and Elastic operates from Amsterdam among other offices.

Algolia itself contracts through Algolia SAS in Paris for customers in Europe and offers EU hosting, so check where data is stored as well as who invoices.

What are the Algolia alternatives for ecommerce?

Constructor, Athos Commerce, HawkSearch, Doofinder, Searchanise and Bloomreach are built around product catalogues. Athos Commerce now includes Klevu and Searchspring. Most of them sell by quote or by plan size, not by request.

Can I run Algolia on my own servers?

No. The pricing and product pages describe a hosted service only. Typesense, Meilisearch and Elasticsearch are the alternatives in this ranking that you can install yourself.

Do I need developers to replace Algolia?

For Typesense, Meilisearch and Elasticsearch, yes. For AddSearch, Doofinder and Searchanise, the vendors describe set-up without code on supported platforms. Larger suites such as Coveo and Bloomreach include onboarding from the vendor.
