Surfer SEO alternatives: 11 SEO tools compared

People look for a Surfer alternative when a plan priced around document counts and AI-prompt tracking no longer matches the work, or when they need keyword data, rankings, backlinks and audits that a content editor does not supply. They move to a broader SEO suite, to a cheaper content optimiser inside a tracking tool, or to a specialist for one job.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Surfer SEO in our SEO tool ranking are SE Ranking, Semrush and Mangools. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose SE Ranking if you want content scoring plus rank tracking in one subscription. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best SEO Tools in 2026, and each says where it differs from Surfer SEO.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Surfer SEO

#11 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking

  • Pricing: Per month per plan, published; trial available
  • Established in: Poland
  • Built for: Content teams who optimise many pages against search guidelines
  • Not for: Anyone who needs backlink data or technical site audits

Why buyers look past Surfer SEO

  1. 01

The plans are metered in documents and AI prompts

Surfer's pricing page lists Discovery at 120 documents, Standard and Pro at 360, and Peace of Mind at unlimited documents (marked with an asterisk), all billed yearly. Writers who optimise a few long pages a month pay for headroom they do not use, while agencies that brief many pages hit the cap and are pushed to the next tier.

  2. 02

Tracking AI answers is priced as part of the same ladder

The page now leads with AI search visibility. The AI Search Analytics plan tracks 50 prompts refreshed daily, Standard tracks 25 prompts refreshed weekly, and Pro and Peace of Mind track 50 and 100 daily. If you only want the content editor, you pay for a ladder shaped around a feature you may not use, and prompts are a unit you have to forecast.

  3. 03

One product among several, and not a full suite

Surfer's own site presents it as one of several Positive products, and its feature table covers editor, audit, keyword research, topical map and SERP analysis rather than a backlink index or a long rank-tracking history. Buyers who need link data or site-wide crawling therefore end up paying for a second tool next to it.

What each one does differently

SE Ranking

Not stated by the vendor · Per month per plan, published; add-ons extra; 14-day trial

A suite that adds a Content Editor and AI Writer to rank tracking, audits and backlink research. Core is priced per month with 10 projects, 2,000 daily keywords and 25 articles, and a 14-day trial needs no card. Its content tool is one module, so the editor is not the product's centre.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you want content scoring plus rank tracking in one subscription.

SE Ranking, #9 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Semrush

United States · Free plan; per month per plan, published; extra users and add-ons billed

A full SEO and AI-visibility suite with a Content tab in its pricing, not a content editor first. Plans are priced per month with website and tracked-keyword limits (SEO plan: 5 websites, 500 keywords), and extra tools sit in separate product tabs. It covers far more than Surfer, at a different price curve.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you need research, tracking and audits beside the editor.

Semrush, #12 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Mangools

Slovakia · Free plan; per month or year per plan, published

Five-tool keyword and SERP suite from a company with an office in Bratislava, plus a free SEO Content Optimizer fed by your Google Search Console data. That optimiser improves an existing page against a focus keyword. It is not a brief-and-draft editor, and we could not read its paid prices on our fetch.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you mainly refresh existing pages and want to start free.

Mangools, #2 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

SISTRIX

Germany · Per package per month, published; 14-day trial

Visibility-index tool sold in four fixed packages, priced per month, cancellable monthly. Text optimisation arrives with the Plus package together with three users. It starts at a higher monthly figure than Surfer's entry plan and is built around Google visibility analysis, not around drafting inside an editor.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you want market-wide visibility data with text tools included.

SISTRIX, #1 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Ahrefs

Singapore · Per month per plan, published; extra users billed

Link and keyword index with a Content Kit (AI Content Helper, AI Content Grader) offered as an add-on from a listed monthly price. Plans carry project, tracked-keyword and crawl-credit limits, and extra users are billed. The content side is an extension to a data product, so it is lighter than Surfer's editor.

Switch from Surfer SEO if backlink research matters more than the editor.

Ahrefs, #8 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Seobility

Germany · Free plan; per month per plan, published; 14-day trial

All-in-one tool from a Nuremberg GmbH covering audits, ranking monitoring, backlinks and keyword and content tools. Premium is priced per month on the monthly term, with a 14-day trial and a lower yearly rate. It tells you what to fix on the page, but offers no document-based writing workflow like Surfer's.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you want audits and tracking at a lower monthly figure.

Seobility, #3 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Serpstat

United States · Per month per plan, published; 7-day trial

Keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site audit, clustering and an LLM brand monitor in one platform, with a 7-day trial. The vendor does not state a country on the pages we read. Its focus is search data and clustering, so the guided content-score workflow is not what it sells.

Switch from Surfer SEO if clustering and competitor data outweigh drafting.

Serpstat, #10 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Screaming Frog

United Kingdom · Free to 500 URLs; annual licence per user, published

Desktop crawler licensed per user per year, with a free version limited to 500 URLs. It finds broken links, redirects, duplicates and metadata problems on your own site. It has no content editor, no keyword database and no AI-visibility tracking, so it complements Surfer rather than replacing its writing side.

Switch from Surfer SEO if your real need is technical site crawling.

Screaming Frog, #4 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Sitebulb

United Kingdom · Desktop licence per user and cloud plans, published; 14-day trial

Technical audit tool with Lite at 10,000 URLs per audit, Pro at 500,000 and a separate Cloud plan, run from a UK Limited company. It reports 300+ prioritised hints on site health. It audits what is already published and does not guide the writing of a new page.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you need readable audit reports for clients.

Sitebulb, #5 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

AccuRanker

Denmark · Per month by keyword tier, published; Enterprise quoted

Rank tracker from Aarhus, Denmark, sold by keyword tier: Professional from 2,000 keywords with daily updates, Expert from 10,000, Enterprise quoted. It measures where pages rank and does not score or draft content. Pair it with a writing tool if you drop Surfer.

Switch from Surfer SEO if you only need daily rank tracking at volume.

AccuRanker, #6 of 12 in our SEO tool ranking →

Majestic

United Kingdom · Per month per plan, published; 7-day money-back

Backlink index (Fresh and Historic) from Majestic-12 Ltd, registered in Birmingham, England. Lite starts at EUR 46.99 monthly, with a 7-day money-back guarantee for first-time buyers. It answers link questions only, with no on-page content scoring, so it replaces none of Surfer's editor features.

Switch from Surfer SEO if links are the problem and content is not.

When Surfer SEO is still the right choice

Stay with Surfer when the job is writing and refreshing pages against live SERP data, you work in Google Docs or WordPress (both listed integrations), and your volume fits a document tier. Its published plans put content scoring, internal linking and AI-visibility tracking in one place, whereas the alternatives here either bolt content tools onto a data suite or leave content out entirely. Switching adds a second subscription if you still need a writing workflow.

What moving off Surfer SEO involves

  1. 01

Export your work before you cancel

Surfer's feature table lists data export on every plan, and the Pro and Peace of Mind tiers add custom templates and, on the top tier, API access. Save your briefs, content scores and tracked-page lists, and copy finished articles out of the editor, since scores will not carry over to another tool.

  2. 02

Run both tools through one publishing cycle

Take five pages you already optimised and score them in the replacement. Plans differ in what they count (documents, articles, tracked keywords, URLs, prompts), so check which unit your volume uses up before you buy a yearly term. SISTRIX and SE Ranking offer a trial, Mangools a free account, Screaming Frog a free version.

Questions about replacing Surfer SEO

6 answers
Is Surfer SEO a keyword tool or a content tool?

Its pricing page presents it as a content optimisation and AI-visibility platform. The plan tables list an editor, content score, audit, keyword research and SERP analysis.

It does not list a backlink index, which is why many buyers pair it with a link or rank tool.

How much does Surfer cost?

The pricing page shows prices billed yearly: Discovery 49 EUR, AI Search Analytics 82 EUR, Standard 99 EUR, Pro 182 EUR and Peace of Mind 299 EUR per month. Enterprise is custom. We did not see a monthly-billing price, so ask before assuming one.

Where is Surfer based?

The company line on its site reads Surfer Sp. z o.o., Wrocław, Poland. The site also presents it among the Positive group's products, so check the contract entity before you sign.

Which alternative has the closest content editor?

SE Ranking lists a Content Editor with briefs, a content score and Google Docs integration, and Mangools offers a free content optimiser that works from Search Console data. Neither is built only around the editor the way Surfer is, so test your own pages.

Is there a free option?

Mangools has a free account and a free SEO Content Optimizer, Screaming Frog has a free version limited to 500 URLs, and Majestic has free registration. SE Ranking, SISTRIX, Seobility and Serpstat offer trials of 14 or 7 days.

Can a technical crawler replace Surfer?

No. Screaming Frog and Sitebulb audit the site and list technical issues, but neither lists content scoring or AI-visibility tracking on its pricing page. Use them next to a writing tool.
