Buffer alternatives: 11 social media management tools compared
Buffer is most often left by people who have outgrown a one-person queue: teams that need approvals and several editors, agencies that want a workspace per client, and users whose bill climbs with every extra channel. Some arrive expecting Buffer to lack an inbox or analytics, which it does not, so the better question is which limit actually bites. They move to flat-plan or workspace-based schedulers, and to inbox-centred tools.
Pricing: Free tier; paid per channel per month, published
Established in: United States
Built for: A small team with many channels and no approval process
Not for: An agency with clients who must approve every post
01
Why buyers look past Buffer
01
The bill is per channel, so it grows with every account
Buffer charges per connected channel: Essentials is $5 a channel a month and Team $10 a channel a month on annual billing, with the first ten channels priced higher than channels 11 and up. Ten channels on Team therefore come to about $100 a month before the volume discount. A plan sized by brand or by workspace, where one price covers several networks, can be cheaper for anyone who publishes to three or four networks per brand.
02
Team features start on the dearer plan, and Essentials is single-user
Essentials includes advanced analytics and the community inbox but has one user account. Unlimited team members, content approval workflows, custom permissions and branded reports sit on Team. A second person who needs to draft or approve posts moves the whole account to $10 a channel, and the free plan also has one user and 10 scheduled posts per channel.
03
Check what you think is missing before you leave
Buffer lists a Community inbox on every plan including free, covering comment replies on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube and Mastodon, and it includes Insights analytics on the free plan. What it describes as lightweight engagement is not a full shared inbox for direct messages with assignment rules, and its reporting is not a listening or CRM suite. If your gap is exactly that, the inbox-centred tools below are the real alternative.
Per month by plan, published, from $99; listening and employee advocacy priced as add-ons; 14-day trial

What each one does differently

Publer
Albania · Free tier; paid per social account per month, published
Prices per connected social account instead of per channel tier, with a free plan that cannot connect X accounts. Bulk scheduling accepts up to 500 posts from a CSV, and it has recycling and workspaces. Team collaboration and approval workflows come from buying additional members, so it is no cheaper if you need many editors.
Switch from Buffer if you schedule in bulk and want a closer match to Buffer's per-account billing.
Spain · Free tier; paid per month by number of brands, published
Sizes plans by number of brands, not channels: the free plan covers one brand with 20 posts a month and 30 days of analytics, and Starter covers up to 10 brands from about 16 to 20 euros a month. Team management and approval sit on the Advanced plan. It leans toward analytics and competitor tracking, not an inbox.
Switch from Buffer if several networks per brand make per-channel pricing add up and you want reporting.
Canada · Per month by plan, published; 14-day trial
Bundles profiles into social sets: one set of up to 8 profiles and one user on Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly. Post counts are capped per profile on lower plans (30 on Starter), and the social inbox and approval workflows start on Growth with two users. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
Switch from Buffer if you publish mostly visual content and want one price for a set of profiles.
India · Free tier; paid per month by brand, published, low
Prices by brand with several channels inside each, and has a free plan for one brand with six channels and one team member. Content approval workflows begin on Professional, while the Premium plan brings in three team members and CRM or Desk integration. Most useful to organisations already on Zoho; others get little from that.
Switch from Buffer if you already run Zoho and want approvals without per-channel fees.
Romania · Paid per month by plan, sized by profiles and workspaces, published; 14-day trial
Plans are sized by profile count: from $29 a month for 5 profiles and one user, $49 for 10 profiles with a post approval system, $99 for 25 profiles across 5 workspaces. Unlike Buffer there is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, and unlimited AI content generation is included on all plans.
Switch from Buffer if you want a fixed monthly price per block of profiles and approvals at mid-tier.
France · Free plan; paid per month by plan, published
Analytics comes first, with a free plan of 2 profiles, one user and 10 posts a month per profile. Paid plans start from 9 euros a month billed yearly, but X support and the community inbox only arrive on the Launch plan from 33 euros, so it narrows quickly if you post to X.
Switch from Buffer if reporting and history matter more to you than a long publishing queue.
France · Free tier; paid per user per month, published
Built around a unified inbox plus publishing and reporting, priced per user: $79, $119 or $149 a month per user on annual billing. Standard covers 10 social profiles per user. Saved replies, moderation rules and ROI analysis sit on Advanced. It costs far more than Buffer for a solo user, so it only pays off for teams that answer a lot of messages.
Switch from Buffer if your team answers as many comments and messages as it publishes.
Romania · First 50 posts free with no time limit; paid per workspace per month, published; unlimited users
Priced per workspace with unlimited users on every plan: Basic is $33 a workspace a month for 4 social pages and 60 posts, Pro $49 for 10 pages and 150 posts. Analytics ($12), social inbox ($7.50) and listening ($82.50) are paid add-ons per workspace. Approval is the focus, so the reporting is thinner than the price suggests.
Switch from Buffer if approval by many people who do not publish is your real bottleneck.
United Kingdom · Per month by plan, published; unlimited users on all plans
Gives each client a workspace and allows unlimited users on every plan, so approvers on the client side add no cost. It is a UK company, owned by ASG, which is backed by Alpine Investors. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, and the workspace structure adds little for a single brand.
Switch from Buffer if you are an agency and client approvers keep adding to the Buffer bill.
Starts at $49 a month on annual billing ($65 monthly) for 12 social accounts, 3 users and approval workflows, so one flat price replaces per-channel billing. The Beyond plan lifts that to 60 accounts and unlimited users at $249 a month on annual billing. No free plan.
Switch from Buffer if you have 8 to 12 accounts and want approvals at a flat, published price.
United States · Per month by plan, published, from $99; listening and employee advocacy priced as add-ons; 14-day trial
Starts at $99 a month with 15 profiles and 2 users, which is a much higher entry price than Buffer. X is a $29 a month add-on. It combines publishing with an inbox, and employee advocacy ($199 a month for 25 employees) and wider listening are paid extras. No free plan, only a 14-day trial.
Switch from Buffer if you have many profiles and want inbox and publishing in one platform.
Buffer remains the right choice for a solo creator, a small business or a small team with a handful of channels who mostly queue posts. The free plan is genuinely usable (3 channels, a Community inbox and Insights), Essentials adds advanced analytics at $5 a channel, and Team adds unlimited members and approvals at $10 a channel. If you manage three to six channels and have one or two editors, per-channel pricing is predictable and most alternatives with an inbox cost more.

What moving off Buffer involves
01
Count channels and editors before you compare quotes
Buffer bills per channel, while alternatives bill per user, per brand, per workspace or per block of profiles. List your channels, the people who draft and the people who only approve, then price each tool on that exact mix. The same account can be cheaper or dearer by a factor of three depending on the unit.
02
Move your ideas and scheduled content deliberately
Buffer holds your queue, your Ideas library (100 on free, unlimited on paid plans) and your analytics history inside the subscription. Export or copy what you still need and let the queue run out before cancelling, and check on each new tool which networks it supports, since X is limited on Publer's free plan and on Iconosquare's lower plans.

Questions about replacing Buffer
6 answers
What is the best free alternative to Buffer?
Publer, Metricool, Zoho Social and Iconosquare all list a free plan, with different limits: Metricool is one brand with 20 posts a month, Zoho Social one brand with six channels and one member, Iconosquare 2 profiles and 10 posts a month per profile.
Buffer's own free plan allows 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each.
Does Buffer have an inbox and analytics?
Yes. Buffer's Community feature for replying to comments is included on every plan including free, and Insights analytics is on the free plan, with advanced analytics on Essentials and Team.
It does not present itself as an enterprise social inbox, so teams that need heavy message handling look at Agorapulse or similar.
Why is Buffer getting expensive for me?
Because the price is per channel. Ten channels on Team is about $100 a month on annual billing before volume discounts, and every extra channel adds to it.
Plans priced per brand, per workspace or per block of profiles (Metricool, Later, Loomly, Planable) can come out lower when you run many networks.
Which alternative suits agencies?
Sendible and Planable both allow unlimited users, which makes client approvers free. Sendible gives each client a workspace, Planable prices per workspace. Metricool's Advanced plan covers up to 50 brands with team and client management.
Which alternatives support team approvals?
Buffer Team includes content approval workflows. Among the alternatives, Planable, Loomly, SocialBee from its Accelerate plan, Later from Growth, Zoho Social from Professional and Metricool from Advanced list approvals, so check which tier you will actually need.
Where is Buffer based?
Buffer describes itself as a fully remote company with no physical headquarters, with team members across 15 countries. It was started in November 2010 by Joel Gascoigne.
