Algolia vs Typesense

Algolia is a hosted service that meters search requests and records, while Typesense is a GPL-3.0 engine you can run yourself or rent as an hourly dedicated cluster. The bill therefore grows with traffic at Algolia and with memory at Typesense. Typesense even offers migration help to heavy Algolia spenders.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    What drives the invoice

Algolia's Grow plan includes 10K search requests a month, then charges $0.50 per extra 1K, plus $0.40 per extra 1K records beyond 100K. Typesense Cloud sets no limit on records or operations and prices a dedicated cluster by memory. Steady high query volume favours the memory model.

  2. 02

    Starting for free

Algolia's free plan covers 10K search requests, 50K records, 5K recommendation requests and 5K crawls a month, with no card needed. Typesense offers a free cluster to start on its cloud pricing page and the server itself is open source. Both let you test before paying.

    Depends on the buyer

  3. 03

AI and ranking features by tier

Algolia keeps AI Ranking and AI Synonyms on Grow Plus, while NeuralSearch, personalization in real time and 99.99% availability need Elevate, which lists a custom price. Typesense documents importing your own embeddings or auto-generating them through OpenAI, Azure OpenAI and compatible APIs, without a tier gate.

  4. 04

    Memory limits versus metering

Typesense is an in-memory engine, so a text-heavy catalogue needs a large cluster whatever the traffic. Algolia has no such sizing step, but a big record count and busy search box get billed on two separate axes. Neither avoids a cost surprise; they just hide it in different places.

When neither fits

If you want a hosted search tool that is simpler to configure for a shop or website, neither is the obvious fit. Look at Meilisearch for another open-source engine or AddSearch for a packaged site search product.

Algolia or Typesense: questions

3 answers
Does Typesense charge per search?

No. Typesense Cloud has no limit on records or operations and bills a dedicated cluster by the hour, sized by memory.

What does Algolia's free plan include?

Up to 10K search requests and 50K records a month, plus 5K recommendation requests and 5K crawls. Paid Grow and Grow Plus add per-1K charges beyond the included amounts.

Can I host Typesense myself?

Yes, the server is released under GPL-3.0 and its README describes a C++ engine that holds the index in RAM. Check the licence if you plan to embed it in a distributed product.
