Best Keyword Research Tools in 2026

Keyword research tools show which phrases people search, how often, and how hard it is to rank for them. Some mine autocomplete, some read the live results page, and suites bundle both with rank tracking and links.

Many meter use by credits or daily requests. This guide ranks eleven on setup effort, real price, exit and independence.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

In short

What keyword research tools software does

Keyword research tools collect search phrases, estimate monthly volume, cost per click and ranking difficulty, and group related terms so writers and advertisers can choose which topics to target.

How we ranked these

5 criteria, in order

To rank keyword research tools we asked, in turn, how much work setup takes, what it truly costs, whether data can be taken back out, whether leaving is possible, and who the product suits. The ranking then gives places 1 to 3 to challengers outside the best-known brands, if the category has such vendors, and the incumbents follow. The reasoning behind the five tests, and behind having no score out of ten, is set out on the how we work page.

#1 Keyword Chef

Wildcard keyword search with bulk SERP checks aimed at niche publishers

Ranked #1 of 11 in Best Keyword Research Tools in 2026.

Pricing on requestNorth America

Keyword Chef works from wildcard patterns. A phrase such as best-of with a gap in the middle returns clusters, and each report is saved and can be shared publicly. Country targeting applies to keywords, volume and results, and a bulk SERP analyser highlights forums.

Custom keyword lists can be uploaded for volume and results checks. Two credit models exist: monthly subscription credits that refresh, and lifetime pay-as-you-go credits without Niche Insights. A trial needs no card.

What stands out
  • Wildcard search
  • Bulk SERP checks
  • Free trial
Where it costs you
  • Pay-as-you-go credits exclude Niche Insights, which is billed separately each year
  • The pages describe publisher niches and mention no rank tracking or backlink data
Right for

Niche-site owners hunting small topics where forums still rank on page one

Wrong for

Agencies needing client reporting, rank tracking or link data

United StatesCredit-based: monthly subscription or pay-as-you-go packs; free trial without a card

#2 KWFinder

Bratislava-built keyword finder with a free account and local results

Ranked #2 of 11 in Best Keyword Research Tools in 2026.

Published pricingEurope

KWFinder is one module of Mangools, next to SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler. Searches run by keyword or by competitor domain, and the site quotes exact volumes with historical trends.

Location choice covers about 65,000 cities, districts and countries. The company claims 2.5 billion related keywords in its index. Rank tracking in SERPWatcher is weekly, and daily only on Agency. Subscriptions auto-renew and are cancelled in the account.

What stands out
  • Local SERP data
  • Free account
  • Rank tracking add-on
Where it costs you
  • The free account allows five lookups per 24 hours, so real work needs a paid tier
  • Refunds apply within 48 hours and not to two consecutive subscriptions

Wrong for

#3 LowFruits

Finds weak-ranking sites in the SERPs to show which keywords are easy

Ranked #3 of 11 in Best Keyword Research Tools in 2026.

Published pricingNorth America

LowFruits pulls long-tail ideas from Google autocomplete, then extracts the results page for each keyword and flags how many weak sites rank. One analysed keyword costs one credit.

Standard gives 3,000 credits and 100 tracked keywords, Premium 10,000 credits and 500. Prices are in dollars, cheaper when billed yearly. Credit packs from 2,000 to 50,000 last a year, and refunds are offered for 14 days.

What stands out
  • Weak-site detection
  • Autocomplete ideas
  • Pay-as-you-go packs
Where it costs you
  • Rank tracker, competitor extraction and domain explorer need a subscription, not credits
  • Subscription credits do not roll over, and a refund needs fewer than 100 credits used
Right for

Bloggers deciding which long-tail topics a new site can realistically win

Wrong for

Buyers who want backlink data or a full audit suite

Paid credits unlock volume, CPC, competition and trends on more than fifteen sites. The four annual plans run from 100,000 credits for one seat to 8 million credits for twenty. An MCP server lets AI assistants pull live keyword data.

How to choose keyword research tools software

Keyword research tools collect search phrases, estimate monthly volume, cost per click and ranking difficulty, and group related terms so writers and advertisers can choose which topics to target. The differences that matter are rarely in the feature list, so this is the order we would work through them.

  1. 01

    Start with pricing transparency

Prices are public at 8 products (KWFinder, LowFruits, Keywords Everywhere, AnswerThePublic, Moz, Ahrefs, Semrush, Google Keyword Planner) and on request at the remaining 3, so budget time for quotes if your favourite is in that second group.

  2. 02

Look at where the vendor sits

Look at the contracting entity: these 11 vendors sit in 6 countries, split by region as North America 5, Europe 2, Elsewhere 2, Asia-Pacific 1, Middle East 1. The servers can be anywhere; the legal obligations follow the company.

Keyword research tools: discovery, difficulty or volume

Three jobs hide behind this label. Discovery tools such as Keyword Tool and AnswerThePublic mine suggestions and questions. Difficulty tools such as LowFruits and KWFinder judge whether a page could rank, LowFruits by counting weak sites in the results. Volume tools such as Google Keyword Planner and Keywords Everywhere estimate demand, the first for advertisers and the second as a browser overlay.

Suites like Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz bundle all three with tracking and links. A beginner choosing a suite pays for modules they never open, while a specialist chosen for the wrong job leaves a gap that costs time later. Write down which question you ask most often before comparing plans.

  • Write the three questions you ask most when planning content.
  • Match each question to discovery, difficulty or volume.
  • Check that the tool answers your main question on its free level.

Credits, daily requests and query caps: how limits are counted

Limits are the real price in this category. Keywords Everywhere charges one credit per keyword and a single search can use about 29. Keyword Insights bills 1 credit per clustered keyword and 100 per brief. LowFruits spends one credit per analysed keyword, and Keyword Tool allows 50 to 400 requests a day.

Moz caps keyword queries at 150, 5,000 or 15,000 a month, AnswerThePublic counts searches per month, and KWFinder sets a daily lookup cap on its free account. Credits may expire after a year or reset monthly. Estimate how many keywords you check in a typical week, multiply by the unit each vendor counts, and compare that with the plan allowance.

  • Count the keywords you check in a normal week.
  • Convert that number into each vendor's unit.
  • Ask whether unused credits expire or reset.

Where the numbers come from, and how to cross-check them

Volume figures are estimates, and sources differ. Google Keyword Planner reports ranges built for advertising, and says very low-volume terms are not discoverable. Keyword Tool and LowFruits start from autocomplete, which shows what people type rather than counting how often. Keyword Chef and LowFruits read the live results page, so their difficulty score depends on who ranks today.

Moz states a 1.25 billion keyword index and Mangools states 2.5 billion related keywords, but neither number tells you about accuracy for your market. Pick five keywords you already rank for, run them through two tools, and compare against your own Search Console figures before you trust either.

  • Test five keywords you already rank for.
  • Compare tool volume with Search Console impressions.
  • Re-check difficulty scores after a month, since results change.

Exit and trial terms: how easy it is to leave

Trials and refunds differ more than prices. Semrush offers a free plan and a seven-day trial, Moz a free trial, and Keyword Chef a trial without a card. Keyword Insights charges one dollar for seven days. Keyword Tool offers a 30-day refund instead of a trial, while KWFinder refunds within 48 hours and LowFruits within 14 days if fewer than 100 credits were used.

Keywords Everywhere sells annual plans that can be cancelled at any time. Subscriptions at KWFinder renew automatically until you switch them off. Put the cancellation date in your calendar on the day you sign, and export your keyword lists before you leave, since saved lists seldom move between tools.

  • Note the refund window and who it excludes.
  • Export saved keyword lists before cancelling.
  • Set a reminder before any automatic renewal.

What goes wrong most often when buying keyword research tools software

  • Buying a suite for keyword research alone, then paying for crawling and tracking you never open.
  • Trusting one tool's volume number without checking it against Search Console.
  • Ignoring how a vendor counts units, so a credit plan runs dry mid-project.
  • Treating Google Keyword Planner's advertising estimates as organic demand.
