Best Core Banking Software in 2026

Core banking software is the ledger system that holds a bank's accounts, balances, interest, fees and loans.

This guide ranks eleven vendors on the effort of the first ninety days, the real cost once payments and channels are added, how a bank gets out, whether it can buy without an integrator, and which institution each is built for.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

In short

What core banking software does

Core banking software is the system of record in a bank that processes accounts, deposits, loans, interest and fees in real time and posts every transaction to the ledger.

How we ranked these

5 criteria, in order

The ranking follows five checks. Setup effort comes first, then real cost, then the route for getting data out, then lock-in, then the intended buyer. The ranking then gives places 1 to 3 to challengers outside the best-known brands, if the category has such vendors, and the incumbents follow. We explain on how we work why the tests are these five and why no product receives a score.

#1 SDK.finance

Transaction platform and ledger sold on a published SaaS tariff

Ranked #1 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Published pricingEurope

SDK.finance gives a core banking buyer two routes. The SaaS tariff starts with a flat three-month period and then moves to a monthly fee plus a charge per transaction, with back office and mobile apps in the package.

The other route is a source-code licence for the buyer's own infrastructure, with twelve months of support and updates. More than 650 REST APIs are listed, and PCI DSS Level 1 and ISO 27001:2022 are claimed.

What stands out
  • Published tariff
  • Source-code licence
  • Fintech platform
Where it costs you
  • The tariff covers the SaaS version only, and the price of the source-code licence still has to be asked for.
  • TechFin UAB states that it holds no banking or payment licence, so the client must bring one or find a partner.
Right for

Fintechs and payment firms that want a priced core they can license or rent

Wrong for

Universal banks migrating a large legacy ledger

LithuaniaPublished SaaS tariff with a flat start period, then a monthly fee plus a per-transaction fee; source-code licence quoted

#2 Skaleet

Modular SaaS core for banks and payment firms, with EU private cloud

Ranked #2 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

Skaleet describes an event-driven, API-centric core whose modules can be switched on individually, with a release every two months. The vendor says it runs private-cloud data centres inside the EU that fall outside the US Cloud Act.

Named customers include Caisse d'Epargne Hauts de France and SSP. A buyer should test the four to six month implementation claim in a proof of concept, because the pages give no timeline for a full legacy book.

What stands out
  • Modular SaaS core
  • EU private cloud
  • Event-driven
Where it costs you
  • Prices appear only after a demo, so budgeting for the four to six month project cannot start from the website.
  • Delivery is SaaS only, which rules the product out for a bank that must run its ledger in its own data centre.
Right for

Banks and payment firms wanting modules added one at a time from an EU cloud

Wrong for

Institutions that require the ledger on their own servers

FranceQuoted per organisation, shown after a demo; SaaS delivery

#3 Mambu

Composable SaaS ledger split into deposits, lending and payments modules

Ranked #3 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

In core banking, Mambu is the module-by-module option. A buyer can start with one lending or deposit product and add payments later, reading the public API reference before signing anything. The homepage claims hundreds of customers in more than 65 countries, a vendor figure without an audit.

Because payments, cards and channels come from separate modules or partners, the integration effort sits with the bank, and the total programme is larger than any single module quote suggests.

What stands out
  • Composable core
  • Deposits and lending
  • Public API docs
Where it costs you
  • Quotes follow a demo, so a core replacement cannot be priced from the vendor site.
  • The pages name no hosting region, which a bank outsourcing file will ask for early.
Right for

Lenders and neobanks assembling a stack from separately bought modules

Wrong for

Banks wanting a single suite with wealth and custody built in

NetherlandsPrice on request following a demo; SaaS delivery

#4 10x Banking

SaaS core for banks, mutuals and lenders with AI migration tooling

Ranked #4 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

10x Banking positions its platform as a fourth-generation core and publishes a guide on how to buy one. Its AI Build function drafts product configuration from a plain-English brief, and AI Learn answers questions from live data.

Case studies name Chase UK, West Brom Building Society, Westpac and Remara. The migration step decides most core replacements, so the useful test is to run AI Migrate on a sample of your own legacy data before you sign.

What stands out
  • SaaS core
  • Building societies
  • AI Migrate
Where it costs you
  • Uptime and volume figures come from the vendor, with no audit report linked from the site.
  • Neither a price nor a hosting region is stated, and delivery is SaaS only.
Right for

Mutuals, building societies and lenders replacing an ageing core with a SaaS one

Wrong for

Banks needing a published price or an own-site install

#5 Thought Machine

Cloud-native ledger whose products live in a configuration layer

Ranked #5 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

Thought Machine describes three separated layers: cloud infrastructure, core capabilities and product logic, run across three availability zones with automated failover. Lloyds Banking Group is named as its first tier 1 client, in 2016.

These are vendor statements, and no uptime reports are published. The site says it avoids big-bang deployments, so a core buyer should ask which product line moves first and who owns the data mapping.

What stands out
  • Vault Core
  • Configuration layer
  • Vault Payments
Where it costs you
  • A bank must work inside the configuration model, since the vendor states that it never forks code for one client.
  • No fixed migration timeline is published, which leaves the largest cost item open.
Right for

Banks with delivery capacity for a staged core replacement

Wrong for

Small institutions wanting a quick, light launch

United KingdomQuoted per bank, set in a sales process; cloud deployment

#6 Crosskey

Transactional banking platform joining accounts, payments and lending

Ranked #6 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

Crosskey also lists a cards platform, a wealth platform, open banking APIs, Verification of Payee and a Swift service bureau, so a bank can buy adjacent services from one group.

The company cites more than twenty years of work and describes implementing and operating the platform together with customers. Website data is processed inside the EU or EEA as a rule, according to the privacy statement. The sales route is a conversation, not a download.

What stands out
  • Transactional platform
  • Nordic banking
  • Payments and lending
Where it costs you
  • The site gives no technical documentation, so integration effort cannot be judged before a sales call.
  • The deployment model is not described, which matters for any bank with hosting rules.
Right for

Nordic and European banks wanting accounts, payments and lending on one platform

Wrong for

Buyers who need public API documentation before a first call

FinlandQuoted per project, no figures on the site

#7 Vodeno

Banking-as-a-service platform with licence access through a partner bank

Ranked #7 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

HiLo defines products as smart contracts, which the vendor describes as self-executing code, with a no-code visual designer and AI help to build them. The vendor claims more than 500 controls and compliance with EBA rules, GDPR and ISO 27001, and offers outsourced transaction monitoring and reporting.

For a core banking buyer the point is the bundle: platform, licence access and compliance services arrive together, which speeds a launch and ties the client to one supplier.

What stands out
  • Banking as a service
  • Smart contracts
  • Partner licence
Where it costs you
  • Regulated activity runs through the partner bank, so a client depends on two companies.
  • Some of the website carried a 2024 footer and placeholder text, which weakens the evidence behind its claims.
Right for

Non-bank firms launching accounts and cards without their own licence

Wrong for

Banks that already hold a licence and want only a ledger

PolandQuotation on request, with partner-bank terms

#8 Engine by Starling

Pre-integrated digital bank platform run by a live UK bank group

Ranked #8 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

Engine by Starling describes a real-time, always-on cloud-native platform. It quotes figures from Starling's 2025 annual report, 6.2 million group accounts and 79 percent active customers, which the page presents as proof of scale.

The Salt Bank case study has its chief executive saying the platform let the bank keep a twelve-month timeline. The offer is a packaged bank, so a buyer who wants to pick each component separately gets less room to choose.

What stands out
  • Digital bank platform
  • Management portal
  • Mobile SDKs
Where it costs you
  • Few references exist outside the Starling group, which narrows independent proof for a buyer.
  • The pages state neither a price nor a hosting region.
Right for

Teams launching a new digital bank on a platform proven in production

Wrong for

Incumbents wanting to migrate an old multi-product ledger

United KingdomRequest a quote; cloud-native platform

#9 ERI OLYMPIC Banking System

Front-to-back banking platform covering custody, funds and private banking

Ranked #9 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

ERI lists ISO 20022 support and real-time straight-through processing, with CRM, client onboarding and loan management alongside the core. Entities are named in Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, Spain, London and Singapore.

The vendor reports about thirty years in the market. For a core banking buyer, custody and fund administration come inside the same system, so a wealth-heavy bank avoids a second purchase, while a retail lender pays for scope it will not use.

What stands out
  • Front to back
  • Custody
  • Fund administration
Where it costs you
  • The offices page lists several legal entities, so the signing company depends on the country.
  • Hosting regions and prices are missing from the pages read.
Right for

Private banks, custodians and fund administrators wanting one front-to-back system

Wrong for

Neobanks and lenders focused on retail accounts only

SwitzerlandQuoted by country entity; SaaS and cloud delivery

#10 Temenos

Four-family banking suite with on-premises, cloud and SaaS delivery

Ranked #10 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Self-hostablePricing on requestEurope

Temenos organises its range into four product families plus an innovation platform, with pages for retail, corporate, wealth, credit unions, community banks and Islamic banking.

The vendor lists 52 offices in 36 countries and sales, delivery and technology partner programmes. Here the choice of own servers, cloud or SaaS is its distinguishing point. The cost to model is the integrator, since delivery partners do much of the configuration work.

What stands out
  • Full suite
  • Deployment choice
  • Partner delivered
Where it costs you
  • Partner-led delivery adds a second contract and a second cost line to most projects.
  • The suite is large, so a small institution may pay for modules it never switches on.
Right for

Banks wanting one suite with a choice between own servers, cloud and SaaS

Wrong for

Small lenders wanting one module and a short project

SwitzerlandQuote built per bank; on-premises, cloud or SaaS terms

#11 Avaloq

Integrated banking and wealth platform with operations offered as a service

Ranked #11 of 11 in Best Core Banking Software in 2026.

Pricing on requestEurope

Avaloq lists AI agents for automation and a partnership with Aladdin by BlackRock. The vendor says USD 5.1 trillion in assets run on the software and that R&D takes over 20 percent of annual software revenue.

Terms place disputes under Swiss law in the Zurich courts. For a core banking buyer the business-process-as-a-service option moves daily operations to the supplier, which cuts staff effort and raises dependence on one company.

What stands out
  • Wealth platform
  • Banking operations service
  • Private banking
Where it costs you
  • The pages do not state who owns the vendor, which a due-diligence file will want settled.
  • Little technical documentation is public, so integration scope stays unknown until a sales call.
Right for

Private banks and wealth managers wanting one platform and optional outsourced operations

Wrong for

Retail lenders and fintechs launching a single product

How to choose core banking software

Core banking software is the system of record in a bank that processes accounts, deposits, loans, interest and fees in real time and posts every transaction to the ledger. Work through these questions in order; they separate the products better than a feature matrix does.

  1. 01

    Check who publishes a price

10 vendors on this page sell by quote, while 1 publish a pricing model you can read today: SDK.finance.

  2. 02

Look at where the vendor sits

Where a company is established decides which courts and regulators can reach it. Here that means 7 countries: Europe 11.

What does core banking software cost, and who publishes a price?

Core banking software is priced almost entirely on request, and SDK.finance is the exception. SDK.finance prints a SaaS tariff with a flat three-month start and later a monthly fee with a charge per transaction, and sells a source-code licence for a quoted amount. Skaleet, Mambu, 10x Banking, Thought Machine, Crosskey, Vodeno, Engine by Starling, ERI OLYMPIC Banking System, Temenos and Avaloq show nothing.

A published figure is a starting point, not a comparison: SDK.finance describes a fintech platform, so its tariff says little about a universal bank core at Temenos or Avaloq. Ask every vendor to price one scenario in writing, with the same count of accounts, products, channels and daily transactions, and include implementation partners in the total.

  • Give each vendor the same account, product and volume scenario
  • Ask whether implementation partners are billed separately
  • Request the source-code or exit terms with the quote

Which deployment options does core banking software offer?

Deployment is the least documented part of core banking software, and Temenos is the only vendor here that states on-premises, cloud and SaaS for the same product. SDK.finance lets a buyer install a licensed source code on its own infrastructure. Skaleet says it runs private-cloud data centres inside the EU and delivers SaaS only, while Mambu, 10x Banking and Vodeno describe SaaS or cloud platforms and Thought Machine is cloud-native.

Crosskey and Avaloq do not spell out a model. If a regulator or board requires the ledger in your own data centre, put that in the first email to each vendor, and treat a vague reply as a no. Also ask how upgrades are applied, because a cloud core that updates itself changes your testing duties.

  • Ask where the production ledger and backups run
  • Confirm whether an own-site install is offered
  • Request the hosting region in the contract text

How hard is it to migrate to a new core banking system?

Migration is the largest part of any core banking project, and the vendor pages say little about it. Thought Machine calls migration the real project and avoids fixed timelines, while 10x Banking markets AI Migrate for mapping legacy data. Skaleet states four to six months for implementation, a claim to test against your own book.

Temenos delivery usually involves partners, so the plan includes a further company. Do not forget the work around the ledger: cards, general ledger postings, digital channels and regulatory reports. Moving one product line first, such as savings, gives a measured result before the rest of the book follows. Agree in writing who owns data cleansing and the reconciliation of balances at cut-over.

  • Move one product line first as a pilot
  • Test the migration tool on a sample of real data
  • List cards, channels and reports in the project scope

Which core banking vendors suit private banks, lenders or neobanks?

The right core banking vendor follows the type of institution. Avaloq and ERI OLYMPIC Banking System centre on private banking, custody and wealth, and ERI adds fund administration and order management. Mambu and Crosskey are aimed at deposits, lending and payments, and Mambu sells them as separate modules.

Engine by Starling and Vodeno suit a company launching a new digital bank, with Vodeno adding access to a partner bank licence. Thought Machine, 10x Banking and Skaleet target banks replacing a legacy core with a cloud one. Match the vendor to your balance sheet and customer base, not to the longest feature list, and ask each shortlisted vendor for two live clients of the same type who will take a reference call.

  • State your institution type before the first demo
  • Check whether wealth and custody sit inside the core
  • Ask who holds the licence if you have none

What goes wrong most often when buying core banking software

  • Comparing the SDK.finance tariff with the quoted prices of Temenos or Avaloq, when SDK.finance is a fintech platform and the others are full bank suites.
  • Reading uptime and account-volume claims from 10x Banking, Thought Machine or Engine by Starling as audited figures, when each is a statement on the vendor's own site.
  • Treating a banking-as-a-service package such as Vodeno as a core, then finding that the licence belongs to the partner bank and not to the client.
  • Leaving implementation partners and migration work out of the budget, so the Temenos or Mambu quote covers only a fraction of the programme.

Frequently asked questions

7 answers
What is the best core banking software in 2026?

SDK.finance leads our ranking of 11. TechFin UAB in Vilnius sells SDK.finance as a transaction platform with accounts, cards, IBANs, KYC and a back office, and it alone prints a SaaS tariff.

Buyers can also license the source code. It is a fintech launch platform, not a universal bank core, and the company says it is neither a bank nor a payment institution.

Which core banking tools publish their pricing?

1 out of 11 state a price model on their own site:

  • SDK.finance: Published SaaS tariff with a flat start period, then a monthly fee plus a per-transaction fee; source-code licence quoted.

Everything else on the list is priced on request.

Is there a free core banking tool?

No. None of the 11 offer a usable free tier.

Where are these core banking software vendors established?

In 7 countries across 1 regions: Europe 11.

  • SDK.finance: Lithuania.
  • Skaleet: France.
  • Mambu: Netherlands.
  • 10x Banking: United Kingdom.
  • Thought Machine: United Kingdom.
  • Crosskey: Finland.
  • Vodeno: Poland.
  • Engine by Starling: United Kingdom.
  • ERI OLYMPIC Banking System: Switzerland.
  • Temenos: Switzerland.
  • Avaloq: Switzerland.
Which core banking tools can you host yourself?

Temenos. The remaining 10 run only on the vendor's servers.

What should you use instead of SDK.finance?

Second is Skaleet, which suits Banks and payment firms wanting modules added one at a time from an EU cloud. Third is Mambu, which suits Lenders and neobanks assembling a stack from separately bought modules.

Who should not buy SDK.finance?

Universal banks migrating a large legacy ledger. The tariff covers the SaaS version only, and the price of the source-code licence still has to be asked for..
