DJ software turns a laptop, phone or controller into a mixing rig: it loads tracks, matches tempo, loops, adds effects and records sets.
This guide orders twelve programs by how much of the price is the base licence, what extra modules cost, how a music library leaves the program, and how independent the vendor is.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
In short
What DJ software does
DJ software loads, analyses and mixes digital tracks on a computer or phone, syncs tempo between decks, applies effects and loops, and drives controllers, turntable interfaces or standalone DJ hardware.
In this order: setup effort, what it really costs, how your data comes back out, whether you can leave, and who each DJ tool is built for. On top of them sits one rule. The top three places are for challengers, which means vendors outside the big names, where the category has any, and the household brands come in from fourth place. We explain on how we work why the tests are these five and why no product receives a score.
Community-built DJ software that stays free and takes donations
Ranked #1 of 12 in Best DJ Software in 2026.
Free tierPublished pricingElsewhere
Mixxx is described on its own site as free and always free, run by an international community rather than a company. Money enters only through a Donate option on Open Collective. That removes renewal dates, tiers and licence keys from the decision.
The same openness leaves the buyer without a named owner, a country or a stated list of supported systems on the home page, so research on the download page is the real setup cost.

DJ software loads, analyses and mixes digital tracks on a computer or phone, syncs tempo between decks, applies effects and loops, and drives controllers, turntable interfaces or standalone DJ hardware. These are the questions that actually differ between vendors, in the order we would ask them.
01
Start with pricing transparency
The split is 7 published against 5 quoted. If you want to compare numbers first, start with Mixxx, VirtualDJ, Serato DJ Pro, DEX 3, Traktor Pro, rekordbox, Lexicon DJ.
02
Ask which country the contract runs through
The 12 companies behind this list are established in 2 countries, by region Elsewhere 11, Asia-Pacific 1. Disclosure obligations attach to the company, so they travel with the vendor even when the servers stay at home.
DJ software: price the base licence and the extras
The headline price rarely buys the whole program. Serato DJ Pro leaves out Pitch 'n Time DJ, DVS, Video, Flip, Play, Club Kit, the iOS app and Serato Studio, all of which come with DJ Suite at a higher monthly or one-time price. VirtualDJ keeps audio pool, video and karaoke in separate subscriptions, so a PRO plan with video costs far more than the tier alone.
DEX 3 splits into a free LE and a paid RE edition. Before choosing, write down the features your gigs actually use, then price the plan that contains every one of them rather than the cheapest plan on the page. The same arithmetic applies when a tool sells editions, such as DEX 3 with its free LE and a priced RE. Compare the bundle price, and note which feature forced each upgrade.
List the modules your sets need before reading any price table
Add content subscriptions to the tier for VirtualDJ
Compare the all-inclusive plan, such as Serato DJ Suite, with the entry plan
Subscriptions, device caps and cancelling rekordbox
Recurring billing brings rules that a one-time licence does not. rekordbox sells yearly or monthly tiers, renews automatically for another month and requires written cancellation, and it limits library sync to three, four or eight devices depending on the tier. Serato lists a one-time licence beside its monthly price. Mixxx has no billing at all.
Think about what happens if you stop paying in a slow season: ask whether the library, cue points and cloud files stay readable, and whether the Free plan or a Lite edition lets you keep playing. The Cloud Option variants of rekordbox add Dropbox space for roughly 96 to 108 euros more per year, so storage belongs in the calculation too.
Check the renewal period and how cancellation must be made
Count the devices you sync, not only the laptop in the booth
Ask what still works after a lapsed subscription
Moving a library between DJ programs with Lexicon DJ
A collection of cue points, loops and playlists is the real lock-in in this market, not the licence. Lexicon DJ exists because of that: it converts libraries among Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, VirtualDJ, Engine DJ and djay Pro, and its Free plan covers full conversion. Engine DJ Desktop works from the other side, preparing collections for standalone hardware.
Before buying, test an export of one real playlist into the program you might leave for, and check whether beatgrids and cue points survive the trip. A DJ who has played from one program for years should plan time for the first migration. Lexicon DJ lists a 30-day money-back guarantee, which makes a paid test less risky than usual.
Convert one real playlist before committing to a program
Keep a backup of the original library files
Check whether cue points and beatgrids survive the conversion
Phone apps, hardware ecosystems and mix builders
Not every product here is a laptop club program. Pacemaker is built for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with an Automix mode that builds a set from a playlist. djay runs on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and headsets. Engine DJ is tied to compatible standalone hardware, and DJ.Studio is a timeline editor for preparing mixes that the vendor says is not for live performance.
Confirm the device, the controller or hardware you own, and whether the trial exists at all. Where a trial exists, as at DEX 3 RE and Traktor Pro, the pages read give no length. Mixxx is the exception worth a check, since its home page mentions only Raspberry Pi among platforms.
Match the app to the device you carry to the gig
Check that your controller or hardware is supported
Confirm trial availability before leaving a bar to buy
What goes wrong most often when buying DJ software
Buying the entry Serato DJ Pro plan then discovering that video or turntable control sits in the dearer suite.
Subscribing to rekordbox yearly without checking how many devices the chosen tier can sync.
Judging a program on its home page when Cross DJ, Engine DJ and Pacemaker show no prices at all.
Treating DJ.Studio or Lexicon DJ as a replacement for a live mixing program, which neither claims to be.
