What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational assistant, available on web, iOS, Android and desktop. People use it to write, summarise, analyse files, search the web, generate images, run research tasks and work with code. The vendor sells it in tiers for individuals (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) and for organisations (Business and Enterprise), plus education offers.

The pricing page now names several model families, among them GPT-6 Luna, Sol and Astra, alongside GPT-5.6 variants, and which ones you can use depends on the plan. Newer surfaces on the vendor's site include ChatGPT Work for desktop tasks, Codex for coding, Dots as an always-on agent, Plugins, Slides and Study Mode. Conversation history, memory, projects and scheduled tasks arrive in different amounts as you move up the plans.

03

ChatGPT key features

  • Plan ladder from Free to Enterprise. The Free plan offers unlimited text chats under abuse guardrails, with limits on uploads, images, voice and deep research. Go, Plus and Pro raise those limits step by step, and Business and Enterprise add workspace controls.
  • Model choice by plan. Plus unlocks the larger reasoning models such as GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, while Free and Go are limited to smaller ones like GPT-6 Luna. Pro lists expanded access and a GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model.
  • Deep research. A research mode that works through sources and returns a report. The pricing table shows limited use on Free and Go, regular use on Plus and Pro, and a maximum level for Pro subscribers.
  • Memory, projects and scheduled tasks. Memory carries preferences between chats and grows with the plan. Projects group chats and files, and scheduled tasks run prompts on a timetable from Go upward, according to the comparison table.
  • ChatGPT Work and Codex. ChatGPT Work handles tasks on a computer, limited to the desktop app on Free and Go and available on desktop, web and mobile from Plus. Codex is the coding agent, with limited access on Free and Go and more on Plus and Pro.
  • Context window and file input. The vendor prints context sizes: 27K for instant chats on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, 128K on Pro; reasoning windows reach 256K on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro. Input is a smaller share of that window.
  • Business admin features. Business seats start at two users. The page lists standard and premium seat types, credits for more access, and Enterprise payment by invoice through sales. Nonprofits can request up to a 75 percent discount on Business or Enterprise.
04

Who ChatGPT suits

  • A solo consultant drafting client documents. A consultant can use the Plus plan for reasoning models, projects that keep client files together, and file uploads, then turn on memory so tone and formats stay consistent across proposals and summaries.
  • A ten-person agency that needs shared controls. An agency can place everyone on Business, which starts at two users and is billed monthly or annually. The pricing page lists standard and premium seat types, and says Business and Enterprise can buy credits for more access.
  • A developer who also needs a chat assistant. A developer can pick Plus or Pro for expanded Codex usage, Developer mode in beta and the Pro monthly API credits, while using the same account for ordinary writing and analysis tasks in the chat window.
05

Getting started with ChatGPT

Anyone can open chatgpt.com or install the iOS, Android or desktop app and sign up for the free version. Go, Plus and Pro are individual subscriptions bought with a major credit card, while Business is bought by a team starting at two users and Enterprise through the sales team, which also offers invoicing.

After sign-in you can start chatting, upload files, switch on memory in settings and create projects. The vendor lists a built-in browser, Study Mode and skills among features that every plan can use. Learning takes little time; the harder part is learning which model and mode suits each task.

06

The case for and against ChatGPT

Where ChatGPT wins
  • OpenAI sells ChatGPT in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise levels, with Pro split into three price points.
  • Suits: Organisations that want one vendor with plans from solo use to enterprise.
  • Catalogue tag: Business SSO.
  • Six plan levels is among the traits we single out for it.
  • Credits add-on is among the traits we single out for it.
ChatGPT: limits
  • Its own documentation names no country of establishment, and we could not read its data export page.
  • The ladder has six levels and Pro alone has three price points, which makes the right plan hard to pick.
  • Not for: Buyers who need data residency without an Enterprise contract.
07

Our verdict on ChatGPT

OpenAI sells ChatGPT in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise levels, with Pro split into three price points.

Business adds SAML single sign-on and no training on business data by default, while SCIM, data residency and audit logs are Enterprise-only. The wide ladder makes it easy to outgrow a plan, and extra usage is bought as credits on top of the subscription.

In our AI chatbots and assistants ranking ChatGPT stands at #4 of 14: it follows Claude and comes before Poe. After the challenger places, ChatGPT is one of the established names, ranked in order and without a score.

The vendor states no country of establishment, so ChatGPT is left out of the regional count for this list.

08

ChatGPT pros and cons in practice

Works well
  • A real free plan exists, so people can test the assistant on their own work before paying anything.
  • The plan table prints context window sizes and model access per tier, which makes it easier to choose.
  • Security documentation is broad, with several named ISO standards and SOC 2 Type 2 listed on the trust portal.
  • Nonprofits and verified US teachers have named discount or free paths, as the pricing FAQ states.
Gets in the way
  • Several limits are written as limited, expanded or unlimited under abuse guardrails, without a numeric message cap on the page.
  • The plan names and model families change often, so a comparison made today can look different within weeks.
  • Content on consumer plans is used for training unless the user opts out, which needs a deliberate settings change.
  • Prices were not readable in the page text fetched, so confirm current amounts on the live pricing page before purchase.

Enterprise adds SCIM, key management, role-based access, audit logs through a compliance API and data residency controls.

Paying for ChatGPT

In the catalogue: Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business plans published; Enterprise by sales.

The pricing page lists plans for individuals (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) and for Business and Enterprise. Dollar amounts are loaded into the page by script and could not be read in this check, so none are quoted here beyond what the page labels: Pro is marked "Pro $100" in the page data and comes in three usage tiers, referred to as Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. Billing: monthly for Go, Plus and Business; annual for Business and Enterprise. Business starts at two users; Enterprise is by quote. The Go plan may include ads, according to the vendor.

11

ChatGPT: data and security

The vendor's pricing FAQ says data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 and at rest with AES-256, with an on-call security team and a bug bounty. Its trust portal lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and 42001, GDPR, CSA STAR and FedRAMP 20x.

On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, the comparison table says content is used to train models with an opt-out available. The Hosting entry in the trust portal reads Major Cloud Provider; a region is not stated.

What to look at instead of ChatGPT

We pick the closest products in the same guide by tags, price model and region.

A full write-up exists: ChatGPT alternatives, with reasons buyers leave and what moving involves.

  • Mistral Le Chat (#1 of 14): The assistant from Mistral AI, a company registered in Paris, renamed Vibe on 12 August 2026 at the same chat.mistral.ai address. Pro is $14.99 a month and Team $24.99 per user a month, both under fair-usage limits. Its Enterprise tier mentions self-hosted and on-premises deployment. Prices are shown in USD or EUR. Switch if you want a French vendor with a cheaper team seat and the option of private deployment. (France)
  • Grok (#8 of 14): The assistant now sold as The X Subscription: Free, Plus $8 a month, Premium $30, Super $100 and Ultra $200, with team seats from $30. One shared weekly usage pool covers Grok and Cursor. Plus does not include Grok Bot, and Plus is not available for teams. The documentation names no country of establishment. Switch if you also use Cursor or X and want one subscription with a weekly usage pool.
  • Meta AI (#11 of 14): Meta's assistant inside Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and its own site. Meta states the core experience stays free. Paid Meta One plans start at $2.99 a month for single products, $7.99 for individual bundles and $14.99 for creator and business bundles. It is built around Meta's apps, not a standalone work assistant. Switch if you mainly want an assistant inside WhatsApp or Instagram and do not need a work plan.
  • Strawberry (#13 of 14): A browser with built-in AI companions for non-technical work. (Sweden)
  • Polychorus (#14 of 14): Web and desktop app for chatting with many open-source AI models, with side-by-side answers and a judge model.

When ChatGPT is still the right call: ChatGPT remains the right choice when you want one assistant on the broadest set of plans, from a $8 Go tier to Business with SAML SSO, MFA and no training on business data by default, and Enterprise with SCIM, audit logs and data residency controls. If your team already standardised on it, its usage ranges and credit top-ups are a known quantity. The cost of leaving is retraining prompts and habits, not a data format.

  • ChatGPT vs Google Gemini: pick ChatGPT when you want an assistant that stands alone, a team plan you can buy without a mail and document suite, and published message ranges before you commit.
