ChatGPT vs Google Gemini

ChatGPT is sold as a standalone assistant on a ladder of Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business plans, all in dollars. Gemini is sold to individuals as Google AI plans that bundle cloud storage, and to companies through Workspace seats. Gemini starts cheaper and bundles storage; ChatGPT publishes clearer usage ranges and needs no Google suite for a team.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    Entry price for one person

ChatGPT lists Free at $0, Go at $8 a month and Plus at $20 a month. Gemini lists Free at 0 euro, AI Plus at 4.99 euro and AI Pro at 21.99 euro a month on its Dutch page. The currencies differ, so read the figures as list prices, not a converted comparison. Gemini's first paid step is the cheaper one.

  2. 02

How clearly the limits are stated

Gemini states limits as multiples: AI Plus is 2x Free, AI Pro 4x, AI Ultra 5x or 20x Pro, resetting every five hours up to a weekly cap. ChatGPT's pricing page gives estimated message ranges per five-hour window for Plus, for example 350 to 3,000 for its smallest model, and says weekly limits may also apply. Those ranges describe Codex use. A range beats a multiple of an unstated base.

  3. 03

    What else the subscription carries

Every Gemini plan names storage: 15 GB on Free, 400 GB on AI Plus, 5 TB on AI Pro and from 20 TB on AI Ultra, plus Gemini inside Gmail and Docs from AI Pro. The ChatGPT pricing page we could read lists no storage or office-suite features. Anyone who would buy storage anyway gets more from the Google plans.

  4. 04

    Top of the ladder

ChatGPT Pro starts at $100 a month with $200 and $500 tiers, and its page says Pro has no five-hour limit. Gemini AI Ultra costs from 99.99 euro for 5x Pro limits or 219.99 euro for 20x. Both vendors price heavy use in the hundreds per month, and neither page lets a buyer cap spending by seat. We see no clear winner.

    Depends on the buyer

  5. 05

    Buying for a team

ChatGPT Business costs $20 per user a month on annual billing for two or more users, or $25 monthly. Gemini for teams comes inside Workspace: Starter 6.80 euro, Standard 13.60 euro and Plus 21.10 euro per user a month, with the fuller Gemini features from Standard. Workspace includes mail and documents, so it is not like for like, but the seat price is lower.

When neither fits

If you want a vendor other than these two, the category has other options. Mistral Le Chat publishes Free, Pro and Team plans, and Perplexity is built around cited search answers. Check each plan page, because neither Google nor OpenAI offers an unlimited tier.

4 answers
Is Gemini cheaper than ChatGPT?

At the first paid step, yes on list prices: Gemini AI Plus is 4.99 euro a month and ChatGPT Go is $8.

Compare the equivalent top-up plans too, because AI Pro is 21.99 euro against Plus at $20. Currencies differ, so check your own region's page.

Does Gemini keep my chats for training?

Google's privacy hub says that with Keep Activity on, activity is used to provide and improve services including training generative AI models, a subset of chats is read by human reviewers, and activity is auto-deleted after 18 months.

With it off, chats are not used for training unless you send feedback.
