What is Grok?

Grok is an AI assistant that works in a chat on grok.com and in iOS and Android apps. The vendor docs are now branded SpaceXSI, and consumer Grok is sold as part of The X Subscription, a bundle that combines Grok, the Cursor coding editor and X under one account and one weekly usage allowance. In the chat it takes typed text, voice and file uploads, and the settings show separate usage for Chat, Imagine (images and video), Voice, Build (coding) and the API.

A free tier exists with limited usage. Paid tiers raise the weekly allowance and add a Grok Bot feature, which the docs describe as an AI teammate running on a persistent cloud computer. Developers can also use the xAI API, billed with prepaid credits. The solved problem is access to one assistant that can read documents, write code and make media without separate subscriptions for each.

03

Grok key features

  • Shared weekly usage pool. Paid seats get one weekly pool that covers Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build. Different tasks draw different amounts, so a chat message costs little and a long video or coding task costs more. The pool resets weekly.
  • File uploads. Grok accepts documents, spreadsheets, code, images, audio and video. The docs give limits of about 100 files at once on web, 20 on Android and 150 MB per file, and note that long files may be summarised in sections.
  • Grok Imagine. Image and video generation is part of the product. Generated media carries a Grok watermark with no setting to remove it, and 720p video falls back to 480p once the tier's 720p cap is reached.
  • Grok Bot. Included on Premium, Super and Ultra, Grok Bot is described as durable AI teammates on a persistent cloud computer, with messaging, approvals, connectors and routines. The docs say it differs from Grok on grok.com.
  • Grok Build. Grok Build replaces the retired Grok Studio for coding work. Because Cursor shares the same pool, Grok models in Cursor draw from the same weekly allowance as chat.
  • Extra usage credits. When the weekly pool runs out, paid features pause. Users can buy credits from 5 dollars on the web, turn on Auto Top Up with a monthly cap, or move to a higher tier. Credits expire after one year.
04

Who Grok suits

  • A freelance developer already paying for Cursor. Switching to The X Subscription moves Cursor and Grok under one bill and one weekly pool. Grok models in Cursor use the included allowance, while Claude or GPT models in Cursor are billed at API list prices from the first use.
  • A researcher summarising long documents. The researcher uploads PDFs, spreadsheets and CSV files, asks for extraction of tables or trends, and deletes files later at grok.com/files. The docs warn that embedded images inside non-PDF files may not be processed visually.
  • A five-person marketing team. The team buys Premium seats at 30 dollars per seat, with centralised billing and usage analytics. Each seat has its own weekly pool, and seats can mix tiers, such as one Super seat for the person who makes the most video.
05

Getting started with Grok

You can open grok.com and start chatting; the free tier needs no payment. Paid access goes through The X Subscription, with web billing at grok.com and app store billing on iOS and Android. A connected X account gives X benefits on paid plans, linked under Settings, Account.

Existing SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium plans continue until you cancel or switch. Switching is optional, combines accounts under one workspace and cannot be undone, according to the docs. Usage appears under Settings, Usage. The docs do not give a learning-curve estimate.

Grok pros and cons in practice

Works well
  • One weekly pool across chat, images, voice and coding means a user does not hit a separate daily cap in each product.
  • The pricing doc prints every tier in monthly and annual dollars, plus the multiplier of included usage.
  • File uploads cover documents, spreadsheets, code, audio and video up to 150 MB per file.
  • Existing SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium plans continue, so users are not forced to switch.
Gets in the way
  • Switching to The X Subscription is permanent and support cannot undo it, so check the combined bill first.
  • Generated images and videos carry a watermark that cannot be removed in settings.
  • Extra usage credits cost more per action than the included allowance and can only be bought on the web.
  • Hosting region and model training terms are not stated on the pages read, which a compliance review would need.
