What is Poe?

Poe is a chat platform run by Quora, Inc. that puts bots and apps built on third-party AI models behind a single account. The vendor's terms describe it as a platform for exploring and interacting with bots powered by large language models and other AI models from other companies, and they say Poe does not provide or take responsibility for what those bots return. The app description names models such as GPT-5, Claude-Sonnet-5, DeepSeek-R1 and Veo-3.1, plus thousands of community bots, and says you can chat privately or in a group chat.

Creators can publish their own bots and apps through a separate creator platform, and a developer API exposes the catalogue through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Usage is measured in points, not in a fixed number of messages. The vendor site blocked automated reading of its home and pricing pages, so this entry draws on the terms, privacy policy and creator documentation.

Poe key features

  • Many models in one account. One login reaches bots built on models from different makers, across text, image, video and audio. The terms say each bot has its own profile naming the company, developer or individual who created it. This lets one subscription replace several separate provider accounts for casual comparison.
  • Points-based usage. Bots may limit use by messages, points or compute points. The terms state that points work only on Poe, have no cash value, cannot be transferred and are not refundable. Your usage can be checked under Settings.
  • Shared subscriptions. Some subscriptions can support a family, friend or team account. The holder invites a limited number of registered users to spend their points and can see aggregate point usage for the group, which members agree to when they join.
  • Group chats. The app description says you can chat with the best AI privately or in a group chat. The privacy policy adds that in a group chat, model providers may receive limited identifying information to tell users apart.
  • Memory across bots. If you use the memory feature, Poe remembers context from your chats and shares that memory with other model providers you use on the platform. The privacy policy flags this directly, so it is worth switching on deliberately.
  • Creator platform. Creators can build prompt bots, server bots, script bots in Python, canvas apps, API bots and external applications. The documentation also describes a creator monetization programme, with earnings per message set in bot code. A separate page explains how Poe covers model costs for creators, and the vendor offers custom arrangements.
  • OpenAI-compatible API. The Poe API serves hundreds of models through chat completions and responses endpoints at api.poe.com. The documentation says it uses your existing subscription points and names Cursor, Cline and Continue as compatible tools. Responses supports reasoning, web search and structured outputs, per the documentation.
04

Who Poe suits

  • A freelance writer comparing drafts. Sends the same brief to several models in separate chats, then picks the output that reads best. One points balance covers all of them, so no separate provider accounts are needed, though bots differ in their point cost. Compare the output quality yourself, because point costs differ between bots.
  • A developer prototyping an assistant. Calls the OpenAI-compatible endpoint with one Poe API key and swaps model names to compare answers, before committing to a single provider. The documentation presents this as a low-friction way to switch between models. Keep in mind that API traffic also draws on the subscription points.
  • A bot creator testing a niche tool. Builds a prompt bot or a server bot, publishes it on Poe and uses the monetization programme to earn per message. The creator documentation covers each bot type and a separate cost-coverage page. The documentation says creators can also request custom monetization arrangements by email.

Getting started with Poe

Sign up on the Poe site or app with an email address or phone number, or with a Google or Apple login. The privacy policy also mentions an age check in some regions and says users under 13 are barred. Pick a bot from the home page, or search the catalogue, and start chatting; points are drawn down as you go.

For API use, create a key at poe.com/api/keys and point an OpenAI client at api.poe.com/v1. Creators start from the Poe Creator Guide, choosing between prompt, server, script, canvas, API and external-app routes. Subscription prices and free-tier amounts were not readable on the vendor site this session.

What we make of Poe

Poe is operated by Quora, Inc. and lets one account talk to bots and apps built on third-party models, so you choose between models rather than buying one.

Usage is metered in points and compute points that have no cash value and are non-refundable. We could not read its subscription prices, and the product depends on the model makers whose bots it hosts.

The AI chatbots and assistants list places Poe 5 of 14: the products next to it are ChatGPT above and DeepSeek below. Challengers hold places 1 to 3 where a category has them; the number here is a place in the order, not a mark out of ten.

North America is home to 6 of the 14 vendors, Poe among them (the United States).

07

The case for and against Poe

Where Poe wins
  • Poe is operated by Quora, Inc.
  • Marked in our records as many models.
  • Marked in our records as group accounts.
  • Best for: Curious individuals comparing many models through one account instead of separate subscriptions.
  • Points system, one of the three traits the catalogue lists for Poe.
What to weigh against Poe
  • Usage is measured in points that cannot be refunded or cashed out, which makes the monthly cost hard to predict.
  • It hosts other companies' models, so what you can use depends on those makers.
  • Look elsewhere if you are Organisations needing admin controls, audit logs or central billing.
08

Poe pros and cons in practice

Works well
  • One account and one points balance reach many models and bots, which makes side-by-side comparison cheap.
  • The API follows OpenAI's formats, so existing OpenAI client code runs with only the key and base URL changed.
  • Shared subscriptions let a family or small team pool points under a single account holder who sees group usage.
  • Creators can monetize bots, and the documentation covers several build routes from prompt-only to full server bots.
Gets in the way
  • Bot developers and model providers can receive your chats and uploads, so sensitive material should stay out.
  • Points are non-refundable, have no cash value, cannot be transferred and end when the account is closed.
  • The vendor's terms say bot access is not guaranteed and that features or bots can be removed without notice.
  • Pricing and free-tier limits were not retrievable from the vendor site in this research session.

Paying for Poe

In the catalogue: Points-based message limits; subscription prices not seen on the vendor site.

Subscription prices, point allowances and the free-tier limits were not readable: the vendor's home and pricing pages returned a bot-check page to automated requests, and I did not work around it. What the terms do state is that usage can be limited by messages per bot, points or compute points, that points have no cash value and are non-refundable, and that purchased points fall under the Terms of Sale. Terms of sale text was also not readable. Check the live pricing page before comparing costs.

Poe: data and security

Quora, Inc. is the data controller, with a Data Protection Officer reachable at privacy@quora.com. The privacy policy says chats, photos and documents you upload can reach the model providers and bot developers behind each bot, and that developers using APIs may view and store chats on their servers to train their models.

It advises against sharing sensitive data such as card numbers. Hosting region and security certifications are not stated on the pages I read. You can delete your account in settings.
