Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026

Software composition analysis tools list the third-party packages in your code, match them against vulnerability and licence data, and increasingly block poisoned dependencies.

The eleven below range from a free self-run SBOM server to platform products sold by quote. Order follows setup effort, the bill after extras, data exit, independence and buyer fit; each entry names what it lacks.

Paid visibility exists on this page, yet it has no say over what an entry says about a product, criticism included. A click on a vendor link earns us nothing. How that works.

#1 FOSSA

Dependency and licence scanning priced per project, with a permanent entry tier

Ranked #1 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

Import three representative repositories into the free tier first and read the licence report before anything else. Then compare the Business per-project charge with the number of releasable products you really have, since a monorepo counts differently from a service fleet.

Ask what snippet scanning adds if your developers use code assistants, and whether Enterprise SSO is needed. The ten contributing developer limit applies to Free and Business.

What stands out
  • Per-project pricing
  • Licence compliance
  • Free tier
Where it costs you
  • The free tier caps projects at 5 and dependency depth at 5 levels, so real monorepos outgrow it at once.
  • Snippet and binary scanning are priced add-ons, and SSO or access roles need the quoted Enterprise tier.
Right for

Product companies shipping several applications that must prove licence compliance to customers

Wrong for

Buyers wanting runtime reachability analysis or source scanning in one suite

United StatesPublished per project; free tier; Enterprise quoted

#2 Socket

Package behaviour analysis that blocks malicious dependencies before install

Ranked #2 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingNorth America

Install the GitHub app on a repository that pulls many npm packages and watch which pull requests it comments on. Test the blocking behaviour with a deliberately risky package in a branch, since that is where it differs from CVE-only scanners.

Note that the free plan offers one developer seat and a monthly scan cap, so pilot sizing matters. If your estate uses GitLab or Bitbucket, check the plan that supports it before the trial.

What stands out
  • Malicious package blocking
  • Per-seat pricing
  • Free tier
Where it costs you
  • Reachability on CVEs starts at the paid Team plan, and function-level analysis only at Enterprise.
  • Ticketing and compliance integrations need Business, so mid-size teams hit a plan jump quickly.
Right for

JavaScript-heavy teams that worry about malicious packages arriving through install scripts

Wrong for

Organisations wanting licence obligation reports as their main output

United StatesPublished per developer seat; free tier; Enterprise quoted

#3 Dependency-Track

Free Apache-2.0 platform that tracks CycloneDX SBOMs across your whole portfolio

Ranked #3 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Free tierOpen sourceSelf-hostablePublished pricingElsewhere

Start the Docker Compose distribution on a spare machine and upload one CycloneDX file generated by your build tool. Turn on the NVD and GitHub Advisories sources, then add OSV, and watch how findings differ.

Wire the REST API into one pipeline before onboarding other projects. Decide early who owns upgrades, because the documentation now exists for both the 4.x and 5.x lines and the move between them is a project.

What stands out
  • Open source
  • SBOM-driven
  • Self-hosted
Where it costs you
  • Nobody operates it for you, so database upgrades, scaling and the version 5 migration land on your platform team.
  • It analyses SBOMs you provide, so poor SBOM generation in CI directly produces poor findings.
Right for

Platform teams that want a self-run SBOM inventory without licence fees or vendor lock-in

Wrong for

Small teams without anyone able to run and patch a server

Not stated by the vendorFree open source software (Apache-2.0); self-host with Docker, Kubernetes or WAR

#4 Endor Labs

Dependency scanning with reachability, malware detection and patched library versions

Ranked #4 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Open sourcePricing on requestNorth America

Ask for a proof of concept on two services that share a vulnerable library, and compare how many findings survive reachability filtering with your current scanner. Request the quote itemised by product line, since Open Source, Patches, Package Firewall and SBOM Hub are priced separately.

Check the per-seat scan credit allocations and fair-usage limits described in the documentation before signing, and buy through a cloud marketplace if you hold committed spend.

What stands out
  • Reachability
  • Quoted pricing
  • Patched libraries
Where it costs you
  • No amounts are shown for the Core or Pro tiers, so cost comparison starts only after a sales conversation.
  • Several features, such as patches and the package firewall, are separate products with separate pricing.
Right for

Application security teams that want reachability and patched libraries beside dependency scanning

Wrong for

Small teams that need a published price and a quick card purchase

United StatesQuoted per product; Core and Pro tiers; also on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud marketplaces

#5 Aikido Security

Dependency scanning bundled into one developer-first AppSec suite from Ghent

Ranked #5 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Free tierPublished pricingEurope

Aikido Security BV, registered in Ghent, bundles dependency scanning with reachability, licence checks and autofix alongside SAST, secrets and cloud checks. Connecting repositories and cloud accounts produces ranked findings fast, with much of the noise filtered.

The free Developer plan allows two users and ten repositories but rescans only every three days. Judge the dependency scanner on its own, since it gets less depth than a dedicated SCA product.

What stands out
  • Bundled suite
  • Free tier
  • Belgian BV
Where it costs you
  • Cloud virtual machines mark the edge of host coverage, with no internal network scanning
  • Each scanner stays thinner than a specialist tool
Right for

Development teams wanting dependency, code and cloud findings in one place, starting free

Wrong for

Teams whose job is checking internal servers and network equipment

BelgiumPublished tiers; free tier for two users; Enterprise quoted

#6 Anchore

SBOM-first scanning for containers, backed by the Syft and Grype tools

Ranked #6 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Self-hostablePricing on requestNorth America

Run Syft and Grype from the Apache-2.0 repositories on one container image to see what the engine finds before talking to sales. Then ask for the AWS image or Helm install and decide which team will operate it.

Check which NIST or CIS policy packs apply to your audit, and ask how many SBOMs per month the tier you are offered includes. Runtime inventory and FedRAMP packs are paid additions.

What stands out
  • Container SBOMs
  • Quoted pricing
  • Self-hosted
Where it costs you
  • Pricing is by request for the commercial, government and cloud image options alike, with no figures shown.
  • Malware and secrets scanning are described for containers only, so non-container artifacts get less coverage.
Right for

Regulated teams that must run scanning inside their own Kubernetes or AWS environment

Wrong for

Developers who want a self-service sign-up and a card price

United StatesQuoted per deployment; Free Trial offered; AWS image or Kubernetes install

#7 OX Security

SCA inside an application security posture platform, priced per contributing developer

Ranked #7 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Published pricingMiddle East

Use the package builder to price OX Code alone, counting contributing developers across the repositories you would connect, then compare that with a second quote that adds the platform layer.

In a trial, connect two repositories and compare the deduplicated issue list against your SCA tool's output. Confirm which scan engines are active on your plan, since the page lists SCA, SAST, secrets, SBOM and container scanning together.

What stands out
  • ASPM platform
  • Contributing-dev pricing
  • Israeli Ltd
Where it costs you
  • The pricing builder shows no amounts, and each product line is counted in a different unit.
  • Some governance features are labelled coming soon, so check what exists today in the demo.
Right for

Security teams consolidating SCA, SAST and posture findings into one prioritised queue

Wrong for

Teams buying only a dependency scanner for a handful of repositories

#8 Snyk

Developer-first SCA with a published Team plan and credit-based Enterprise contracts

Ranked #8 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Free tierOpen sourcePublished pricingNorth America

Snyk Open Source checks dependencies and places the result in the pull request, naming the version to move to before anything merges.

A free tier has monthly test limits, the Team plan covers up to ten developers, and Enterprise spends pre-purchased credits per active contributor per day. Alerts for code paths you never call add noise. A growing team means a growing bill, and an EU data region is Enterprise only.

What stands out
  • Free tier
  • Credit-based Enterprise
  • EU data region
Where it costs you
  • Network and host vulnerabilities are outside what it reports
  • Cost follows the number of contributing developers

#9 JFrog Xray

SCA that scans artifacts stored in Artifactory, sold with the JFrog platform

Ranked #9 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Published pricingMiddle East

Begin with a trial that includes both Artifactory and Xray, pointed at one Docker and one npm repository. Define a policy that fails a build on a critical finding, then check how a blocked download looks to a developer.

Compare the SaaS plan with the self-managed one for data residency, and ask what the Unified or Ultimate Security packages add to what the Pro X plan already lists as SCA.

What stands out
  • Artifactory-centred
  • Self-managed option
  • Platform pricing
Where it costs you
  • Value depends on routing packages through Artifactory, which not every organisation does.
  • Security bundles are quoted separately, so the price of SCA is not visible on the plan table.
Right for

Organisations already storing builds and containers in Artifactory that want scans at the repository

Wrong for

Teams whose artifacts live in a registry other than JFrog

IsraelPublished platform plans (SaaS and self-managed); security bundles quoted

#10 Sonatype Lifecycle

Policy-driven SCA, now sold to new customers inside Sonatype Guide

Ranked #10 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Self-hostablePricing on requestNorth America

Ask the sales team to state in writing which product name the contract uses, since Lifecycle capabilities are now inside Guide. Define two or three policies from the default set, for example a licence rule and a security rule, and run them on a representative application.

Check the waiver dashboard workflow, and ask whether the Advanced Legal pack is needed or whether the base licence report is enough for your counsel.

What stands out
  • Policy engine
  • Consumption pricing
  • Self-hosted option
Where it costs you
  • New customers are directed to Sonatype Guide, so the name and packaging of what you buy may not match older documentation.
  • No rates are shown; the quote is built from consumption metrics defined per contract.
Right for

Enterprises that need written policy gates and waiver tracking across many applications

Wrong for

Small teams wanting a self-serve plan with a visible price

United StatesQuoted; consumption-based for cloud and self-hosted; billed annually

#11 Black Duck

Dependency, binary and snippet scanning for SBOMs and licence audits

Ranked #11 of 11 in Best Software Composition Analysis Tools in 2026.

Pricing on requestNorth America

Scope the evaluation on one codebase that mixes package manager dependencies with vendored or copied code, then compare the dependency-only result with the one that adds binary and snippet analysis.

Ask whether you need SCA alone or the Polaris platform, and request that the quote lists them apart. For EU Cyber Resilience Act work, check what SBOM formats the output supports before you commit.

What stands out
  • Snippet analysis
  • Quoted pricing
  • SBOM generation
Where it costs you
  • The SCA page shows no tiers, only a Get pricing request, and Polaris sits beside it as a separate platform.
  • Snippet and binary analysis add depth that a pure manifest project may not need.
Right for

Companies with embedded or acquired code needing a defensible SBOM for audits

Wrong for

Startups wanting a quick scan with a card and a published rate

How to choose software composition analysis tools software

Software composition analysis tools identify the third-party and open source components in an application, match them against vulnerability and licence databases, and enforce policy on what may ship. These are the questions that actually differ between vendors, in the order we would ask them.

  1. 01

Decide whether you need a published price

Only 7 of the 11 print a price; 4 quote per organisation. Comparable without a sales call: FOSSA, Socket, Dependency-Track, Aikido Security, OX Security, Snyk, JFrog Xray.

  2. 02

Decide how much the jurisdiction matters

Headquarters range over 4 countries and 4 regions: North America 7, Middle East 2, Europe 1, Elsewhere 1. Legal exposure follows the vendor, not only the data centre, so read the contracting entity before you sign.

  3. 03

    Check the open source options

Source code is available for Dependency-Track, Endor Labs, Snyk. Running it yourself swaps the licence fee for your own upkeep.

Decide whether you need blocking at install or reporting after the fact

Socket inspects package behaviour and can stop a malicious dependency before it reaches a build, while FOSSA, Black Duck and Sonatype Lifecycle concentrate on inventory, licences and policy reports that arrive after code exists. Snyk and Aikido Security sit between, with pull request checks. A package firewall is a separate purchase at Endor Labs.

Write down whether your last incident was a known CVE, a licence claim or a poisoned package, because each points to a different front runner. Ask every vendor to demonstrate a blocked install and a failed policy gate on your repository, then compare how long each result took to explain to a developer who has never seen the tool before.

  • Is the main fear malicious packages, CVEs or licence claims?
  • Must the tool block at install or only report?
  • Which package managers do we actually use?

Compare what each vendor counts when it prices

Prices hang on different units, and a table of plan names hides it. FOSSA charges per project, Socket per developer seat, Snyk per contributor, JFrog Xray inside platform plans, OX Security per contributing developer for its code product, and Sonatype Lifecycle by consumption. Dependency-Track costs nothing in licences but needs a person who runs and patches the server.

Count your repositories, products and committers in one sheet, send the identical sheet to each vendor and ask for a line-by-line quote with the assumptions written down. Check whether SBOM imports, extra projects, container scanning or support tiers are separate lines, because that is where a cheap entry price tends to grow once a second team joins.

  • How many projects, seats and committers do we have?
  • Which modules are separate quote lines?
  • What happens to price when a second team joins?

Test reachability and noise on your own code

Reachability claims are easy to make and hard to compare. Endor Labs, Socket and Aikido Security all describe reachability or prioritisation, but at different plan levels and on different languages. Run the same two or three repositories through every shortlisted tool, with one library you know to be vulnerable but never called.

Count the findings that remain, how many a developer would act on, and whether each tool explains why a finding was dropped. Keep the raw output, because Anchore, Black Duck and Dependency-Track may report component lists in different shapes, and a decision made on summary dashboards alone is hard to defend later in an audit or to a developer who disputes a finding.

  • Does the tool drop a vulnerable but unused library?
  • Does it say why a finding was filtered?
  • Are results consistent across languages we use?

Plan the SBOM and exit before you sign

SBOMs now drive procurement and regulation, so check formats and ownership. Dependency-Track takes CycloneDX files, Anchore generates and imports SBOMs, FOSSA exports them on the free tier, and Socket offers SBOM export from Business. Ask which formats leave the platform, whether history stays after cancelling and who holds the vulnerability data.

A self-hosted option from Anchore, Sonatype or JFrog changes where data sits but also who patches the server. Test an export on day one of the trial, load it into a second tool and see whether your component list, versions and licence fields survive intact. Put the answers in the contract, not only in the sales deck, so a later switch does not start from zero or depend on goodwill at renewal time.

  • Which SBOM formats can we import and export?
  • Does the export remain after cancellation?
  • Who patches the server if we self-host?

What goes wrong most often when buying software composition analysis tools software

  • Buying an application security suite when the only requirement was a dependency scanner, then using one module of it.
  • Comparing free tiers without checking project, seat and scan limits, which differ widely between FOSSA, Socket, Snyk and Aikido Security.
  • Judging a tool by its count of findings instead of the share a developer can act on after reachability filtering.
  • Forgetting that a vendor may rename or repackage a product, as Sonatype Lifecycle now being sold inside Sonatype Guide.
