Microsoft Copilot alternatives: 11 AI chatbots and assistants tools compared

People look for a Microsoft Copilot alternative when they want a chat assistant and find it sold as part of an Office subscription, or when a work account and a personal account behave as two different products. Most move to a stand-alone assistant with its own plan ladder, to a search-first tool, or to a model aggregator.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Microsoft Copilot in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking are Claude, ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Claude if you want a chat assistant with a flat per-seat price that is separate from your Office licences. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Chatbots and Assistants in 2026, and each says where it differs from Microsoft Copilot.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Microsoft Copilot

#10 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking

  • Pricing: Bundled in Microsoft 365 subscriptions, published; business add-on per user
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Microsoft 365 households wanting AI inside Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Not for: Teams that want a standalone chat tool without Office
01

Why buyers look past Microsoft Copilot

  1. 01

The assistant is sold through the Office subscription

Microsoft's plan page for individuals lists Copilot inside Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99 a month), Family ($12.99), Premium ($19.99) and Pro ($99.99), each with a one-month free trial. On Family the page says the AI features are for the subscription owner only. Someone who wants only a chat assistant therefore buys storage and desktop apps with it, and the higher usage limits sit on Premium and Pro.

  2. 02

Personal and work Copilot are different products with different terms

The consumer terms say you must sign in with a Microsoft account and that the terms do not apply to users who sign in with a work, school or organisational (Entra) account. For the work version, Microsoft's business page describes Copilot Chat as web-grounded and included at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans, while the licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot is a paid layer on top. Teams often discover which one they have only when a feature is missing.

  3. 03

The business add-on assumes an existing Microsoft 365 licence

Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is listed from $18 per user per month paid yearly (shown as reduced from $21) and $25.20 per user per month when billed monthly. It is an add-on to a base plan, and Microsoft also lists bundles such as Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50 and Business Premium with Copilot at $32 per user per month paid yearly. The page also mentions usage-based billing for select advanced AI features, so the seat price is not the whole bill.

What each one does differently

Claude

United States · Free, Pro and Max plans published; per-seat Team and Enterprise

A stand-alone assistant from Anthropic PBC that is not tied to an office suite. Free is $0, Pro is $17 a month on an annual plan ($20 monthly), Max starts at $100, and Team seats are $20 a month billed annually for 2 to 150 people. Its pricing page lists a Microsoft 365 connection on paid plans.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you want a chat assistant with a flat per-seat price that is separate from your Office licences.

ChatGPT

Not stated by the vendor · Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business plans published; Enterprise by sales

OpenAI's assistant, sold on its own plan ladder instead of through an Office bundle. Its pricing pages refused our automated requests this session, so we state no prices here and ask you to read the ladder on the vendor site. It is the product Microsoft's Copilot is most often compared with, but the two contracts and admin consoles are separate.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you want the assistant bought and administered on its own, apart from Microsoft 365.

ChatGPT, #4 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Google Gemini

United States · Free tier with Google account; AI Plus, Pro and Ultra published

Google's assistant with a free tier tied to a Google account. Its Dutch page lists AI Plus at EUR 4.99 a month, AI Pro at EUR 21.99 and AI Ultra from EUR 99.99, with storage of 400 GB on Plus and 5 TB on Pro. The nearest equivalent to Copilot's suite model, but built around Gmail, Drive and Docs.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if your team works in Google's apps and wants the assistant bundled with that storage.

Google Gemini, #9 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Perplexity

United States · Free, Pro and Max plans published; Enterprise priced separately

Perplexity AI, Inc. runs a search-first assistant whose Pro help page promises up to 10x as many citations per answer. It says one subscription includes models from several labs. Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year, a flat ladder where Copilot's heavier use is spread over several Microsoft products.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if most of your questions are research queries where you want sources in every answer.

Perplexity, #2 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Mistral Le Chat

France · Free, Pro and Team plans published; Enterprise by sales

Mistral's assistant, now branded Vibe, with a Free tier and a Team plan at $24.99 per user per month, with a euro price switch on the page. Only Team lists domain verification and data export. It leans towards coding agents and connectors, and has no desktop office apps to compete with Word or Excel.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you want a European-priced team plan with data export and coding tools rather than an Office add-on.

Mistral Le Chat, #1 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Grok

Not stated by the vendor · Free, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra tiers published; team seats

An assistant from xAI. The vendor domains blocked automated requests this session, so we could not read its plan page ourselves and make no price claim. Whether an Office-style suite surrounds it we could not check, which is the main contrast to read for against Copilot.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you want a stand-alone consumer assistant and have checked its current tiers on the vendor site.

Grok, #8 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Meta AI

Not stated by the vendor · Meta states core use stays free; paid Meta One tiers published

Meta's assistant, offered inside its own apps and a web address. Its site refused our requests, so no plan or price is stated here. It is built for consumers on Meta's apps and we found no documentation we could read for team administration, which Copilot for business does publish.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you want a consumer assistant inside Meta's apps and do not need admin controls.

Meta AI, #11 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Poe

United States · Points-based message limits; subscription prices not seen on the vendor site

Quora, Inc. runs Poe as a platform where one account reaches many bots built on different models. Its terms say limits can be expressed in messages, points or compute points, and points have no cash value and are non-refundable. You choose between models, where Copilot gives you Microsoft's choice.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you want to compare several models from one account and accept a points system.

Poe, #5 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

DeepSeek

China · Per-token API published; chat plans not shown on its site

Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence runs a web and app chat service and a metered API. Its privacy policy says personal data is collected, processed and stored in the People's Republic of China. The API page lists per-token prices with peak and off-peak rates, and no chat subscription table.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if cost per token matters and the data location in China is acceptable to your organisation.

DeepSeek, #6 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

Kimi

China · Membership tiers and business edition; prices not readable without JavaScript

An assistant from Moonshot AI whose web app shows tools such as Deep Research, Slides and Docs, with a K3.1 Pro model named in the page title. The prices are not readable without JavaScript, so none are given. It sits outside Microsoft's identity and compliance setup entirely.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you work on long documents and agent-style tasks and can accept a Chinese vendor outside Microsoft's compliance tooling.

Kimi, #7 of 12 in our AI chatbots and assistants ranking →

You.com

United States · API per call published; chat pricing not found on its site

SuSea, Inc. trades as you.com, and its front page now sells search and inference for AI, with an API key as the main call to action. A sign-in link remains, but we found no consumer chat plan or price. It is a developer service first, where Copilot is a finished assistant.

Switch from Microsoft Copilot if you are building your own assistant and need a search API instead of a finished chat product.

04

When Microsoft Copilot is still the right choice

Microsoft Copilot stays the right choice when the organisation already runs on Microsoft 365 and wants the assistant inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams under the same identity and admin controls. The business page lists Enterprise Data Protection and management controls, which stand-alone chat assistants have to match with their own enterprise tiers. Moving to a stand-alone tool means a second contract and a second place to manage users.

05

What moving off Microsoft Copilot involves

  1. 01

Decide which Copilot you are leaving

The free consumer app, Copilot Chat on a work account and the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot are separate offers with separate terms. Write down which one each person uses before cancelling, because a change to a stand-alone assistant replaces only some of them and Office-app features have no direct counterpart.

  2. 02

Keep the Office subscription decision apart from the assistant decision

Because the consumer plans bundle Copilot with storage and apps, dropping Copilot does not lower the bill unless you also downgrade the subscription. Check what Personal or Family costs without the AI features before comparing against a stand-alone plan, and check whether the add-on can be removed from a business licence on its own.

Questions about replacing Microsoft Copilot

5 answers
What is the best alternative to Microsoft Copilot?

It depends on the job. Claude and ChatGPT are general assistants with their own plans, Google Gemini suits teams in Google's apps, and Perplexity suits research with citations. Our ranking is editorial and based on published plans, not benchmarks.

Is there a free alternative to Microsoft Copilot?

Claude lists a Free plan at $0, Google Gemini has a free tier with a Google account, and Mistral lists a Free plan with limited messages. All three cap usage, so heavier work leads to a paid tier.

Why does Copilot ask me to sign in with a Microsoft account?

Microsoft's consumer terms say you must have a Microsoft account to use Copilot. The same terms say they do not apply to work, school or organisational accounts, which fall under different terms.

Does Microsoft Copilot work outside Microsoft 365?

Microsoft sells it for individuals through Microsoft 365 subscriptions and offers a web app at copilot.microsoft.com, and Copilot Chat is described as included with eligible work plans. The deepest features are written for the Microsoft 365 apps.

Which alternative keeps data outside the United States?

Mistral's pricing page offers euro prices and a Team plan with data export. DeepSeek's privacy policy says data is stored in China. Check each vendor's terms for the legal entity before sending company data, since several sites did not state one.
