Avalara buyers are mostly US sellers and finance teams who pay per state for sales tax calculation and filing, or European sellers who need VAT and e-invoicing and find a US-centred vendor a poor fit. They move to a cheaper filing service, a managed US service, a European VAT specialist or an enterprise suite, depending on whether cost, geography or scope drove the search.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to Avalara in our tax compliance ranking are TaxJar, Numeral and Zamp. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose TaxJar if you are a small US online seller who wants order-based pricing and a self-serve trial. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Tax Compliance Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Avalara.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say
about a product. How that works.
Pricing: Per state per month, published for businesses under $50M revenue, from $79; custom above
Established in: United States
Built for: Companies with US sales tax exposure and a standard ERP or shop
Not for: European B2B sellers whose problem is mandates, not rates
01
Why buyers look past Avalara
01
Pricing that grows state by state
Avalara's own pricing page lists Core Compliance at $79 per state per month, or $799 per state per year (15% annual saving), for companies under $50M revenue. Ten registered states therefore cost $790 a month on monthly billing, which is our arithmetic, not a quoted offer. Above $50M revenue the Custom plan is a sales conversation.
02
Priced and scoped for the United States first
The Select pricing is built around US states, and the free state-funded SST services reach up to 25 participating states for qualifying sellers (the $69 tier). A seller whose problem is EU VAT returns, OSS or domestic German bookkeeping meets Avalara's separate VAT and e-invoicing products, which are not on that price list. Check which product the quote actually covers.
03
A large suite when one job is needed
Avalara's range spans AvaTax, Managed Returns, exemption certificates, e-invoicing, VAT returns, 1099 and W-9 filing, business licences and property tax. A company that only needs nexus monitoring or a handful of filings pays for a platform with 1,400+ partner integrations it may not use. Narrower tools price one job on its own.

A Peppol access point and e-reporting connection you reach through an API

What each one does differently

TaxJar
United States · Per month by order volume, published, from $39; a few filings included, extra $50 to $55 each
A US sales tax service with published order-based tiers: Starter at $39 a month for 200 orders and a 30-day trial, with two AutoFile credits a year and extra credits at $50. Professional is quoted through sales and adds more integrations and phone support. The pages we fetched show no VAT or non-US coverage.
Switch from Avalara if you are a small US online seller who wants order-based pricing and a self-serve trial.
United States · $75 per return filed plus $150 per state registration, published; free plan for nexus monitoring
Prices each US filing and registration separately: $75 per return filed and a one-time $150 per state registration, on month-to-month terms, with a base monitoring plan at no charge. Enterprise adds an API and coverage in 90+ countries on custom terms. The vendor promises to cover penalties if a filing is late.
Switch from Avalara if you want a flat fee per filing instead of a monthly fee per state.
United States · Quoted for the US and US plus Canada plans; a no-cost tier covers a one-off nexus study and API sandbox
A managed service where Zamp prepares and files rather than handing you software: US and US plus Canada plans are quoted, while a no-cost tier gives a one-off nexus assessment and an API sandbox. Under its Zamp Commitment, it pays penalties and interest caused by its own errors. No price list is published.
Switch from Avalara if you want someone to own registrations and filings and accept a quoted price.
Spain · Per month by transaction volume, published
Sells, invoices and files for digital sellers worldwide. Published plans scale by transactions per month (Hobby 25, Startup 250, Business 1,000, Growth 2,500), with unlimited users on all but Hobby and a 7-day trial without a card. It can file returns for you. It is a smaller product than Avalara and focuses on VAT, GST and sales tax for online sales.
Switch from Avalara if you sell digital products or subscriptions across borders and want tax-compliant invoices.
Germany · Published monthly packages from 49 euros; OSS and EC sales list reporting added per month or included at the top tier
Has turned into e-commerce bookkeeping and tax advice for online merchants, with German-language packages from 49 euros a month, cancellable monthly. Higher tiers include OSS and EC sales list data, and partner tax advisers handle annual accounts. Work centres on German and EU marketplaces, not on US sales tax.
Switch from Avalara if you are a German or EU marketplace seller who also needs bookkeeping and a tax adviser.
Covers VAT and GST, US and Canadian sales tax, EPR and e-invoicing in 32 countries from one workflow, with in-house tax experts reviewing the work. It describes itself as compliance work across countries, not a checkout calculation engine, and says the two can be used together. We saw no prices on the pages fetched.
Switch from Avalara if your issue is VAT registrations, filings and EPR across many countries, not checkout rates.
Spain · Quoted per organisation, banded by country and return count
Offers its VATify software as a licence for teams that file themselves, plus tax expert support, VAT registration and recovery, e-invoicing and Peppol. Reports include VAT returns, EC sales lists, Intrastat and SAF-T. It is built around European VAT. We found no published prices on the pages fetched.
Switch from Avalara if your main need is European VAT returns, Intrastat and e-invoicing reconciled in one place.
An API-first tax platform: a Tax Engine for calculation in 200+ countries, tax ID validation in 120+ countries, e-invoicing and returns as separate products. It targets developers and platforms that embed tax in their own systems. Its registered office is in Dublin. We saw no price list.
Switch from Avalara if you are a platform or marketplace embedding global tax calculation and ID validation by API.
United States · Quoted per organisation, annual licence
An enterprise indirect tax vendor with determination, e-invoicing, reporting and filing, with listed ecosystems such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, NetSuite and Workday. Its site has no price list and sells through sales contact. It also lists Taxamo, a VAT tool for digital sellers, among its logins. It is heavier to buy than Avalara's published tiers.
Switch from Avalara if you run an SAP or Oracle ERP and want an enterprise suite with a sales-led contract.
United States · Quoted per organisation, module by module
A sales-led platform spanning e-invoicing, indirect tax, 1099 and information reporting, crypto tax and some specialty products. Its homepage claims coverage of about 200 countries. No prices are shown and the pitch centres on enterprise rollouts, which makes it a poor fit for a seller needing a few state filings.
Switch from Avalara if you need e-invoicing, information reporting and indirect tax on one enterprise platform.
Netherlands · Quoted under contract, priced per registered entity; 30-day sandbox trial
Not a tax calculation tool. It is an e-invoicing API into the Peppol network and other national frameworks, covering 31 countries according to its site, with a 30-day sandbox trial. It handles formats and delivery of invoices, not sales tax rates, returns or nexus.
Switch from Avalara if your Avalara use is mostly e-invoicing and you want to connect it through a single API.
Avalara remains the sound choice when you are a US seller registered in many states and want calculation, filing and exemption certificates from one vendor, since its pricing page publishes monthly and annual rates per state for businesses under $50M revenue and it lists 1,400+ partner integrations. It also fits companies that need VAT returns and e-invoicing next to US sales tax under one contract. Splitting those jobs across vendors adds integrations and handovers, which costs more time than a lower price saves.

What moving off Avalara involves
01
Choose the product before the vendor
Avalara sells AvaTax calculation, Managed Returns, exemption certificate management and e-invoicing as separate products. List which of them you use today, then ask each candidate which of those jobs it takes over. A filing-only service will still need a calculation source at checkout.
02
Keep filing continuity and certificates
Do not cancel until the new provider has taken over the state accounts and the next return is scheduled. Ask how exemption certificates and historical transaction data move across, and whether the new vendor reads your existing data or starts clean. Ask for the answer in writing.

Questions about replacing Avalara
6 answers
What is the cheapest alternative to Avalara?
For a small US seller, TaxJar Starter at $39 a month for 200 orders is the lowest published price we found, and Numeral charges $75 per filing and $150 per registration.
Avalara Core Compliance is $79 per state per month, so compare against your real number of states and orders.
Is there a free alternative to Avalara?
No full replacement is free. Numeral's monitoring plan and Zamp's tier give a nexus study at no cost, and Zamp adds an API sandbox.
Avalara's own SST tier, $69 per state per month, gives no-cost calculation and filing in up to 25 states for qualifying sellers.
Which Avalara alternative covers European VAT?
Taxually, Marosa, Taxdoo, Quaderno and Fonoa all list VAT or EU reporting. Taxually lists e-invoicing in 32 countries, Marosa lists VAT returns and Intrastat, and Taxdoo includes OSS data on higher German-language tiers. None publishes the same US state coverage as Avalara.
Can another vendor file the returns for me?
Yes. Numeral, Zamp and TaxJar (through AutoFile credits) file US returns, and Quaderno says it can file for you. Check who is liable for a missed deadline. Zamp and Numeral each state they pay penalties and interest caused by their own errors.
Is Avalara the same as an e-invoicing provider?
Avalara offers e-invoicing and live reporting as a separate product. If invoicing is your main need, Storecove sells an API into Peppol and national networks and does not do tax calculation. Check which countries each vendor lists.
Do alternatives publish prices?
Some do: TaxJar, Numeral, Quaderno and Taxdoo. Zamp, Taxually, Marosa, Fonoa, Vertex and Sovos showed no price lists on the pages we fetched, so you have to ask for a quote. Avalara's page lists rates only below $50M revenue.
