Recurly alternatives: 11 subscription management tools compared

Recurly alternatives are sought by two groups: companies whose billing volume has pushed the percentage fee above what the work is worth, and companies whose pricing has drifted away from the consumer-style subscriptions Recurly was designed around. The first group looks for a flat fee or a self-hosted engine, the second for tools built around quotes, contracts or usage metering.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Recurly in our subscription management ranking are Hyperline, Frisbii (formerly Billwerk+) and Younium. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Hyperline if a B2B software company wants quotes, invoices and dunning in one tool at a published entry price. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Subscription Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Recurly.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Recurly

#4 of 15 in our subscription management ranking

  • Pricing: Percentage of revenue with published starting tier
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Consumer and prosumer subscriptions where churn recovery drives revenue
  • Not for: Metered infrastructure pricing with millions of events
01

Why buyers look past Recurly

  1. 01

    The fee follows billing volume

Recurly's published Starter plan costs $249 a month plus 0.9% of billing volume, though the first $40,000 of monthly billings carries no percentage. All-Access begins at a $1 million volume minimum and is quoted, at a rate the page calls as low as under 1%. If volume doubles, the bill grows although Recurly does no extra work, which is the usual reason to compare.

  2. 02

The stronger churn tools sit on the quoted plan

On Recurly's own pricing page, Starter carries static churn-prevention tools and one dunning campaign. Intelligent churn prevention, multiple dunning campaigns, multicurrency, single sign-on and payments orchestration across gateways are listed under All-Access. A team that chose Recurly for retention and then finds it on the tier above the published one tends to ask what else exists.

  3. 03

Pricing has moved away from the consumer plan

Recurly's pages describe direct-to-consumer subscriptions, a Shopify variant and a revenue-recognition app for DTC businesses. A software company that now sells annual contracts, seats plus usage, or negotiated quotes is using a tool pitched at a different sale. Those companies move to products that start from the quote or the event stream rather than the checkout.

What each one does differently

Hyperline

France · Entry plan = monthly fee plus a revenue share; bigger plans by quote

Hyperline begins from a quote, but its Launch plan is listed at $299 monthly plus 0.7% of revenue processed, for firms up to $2 million annual revenue and 100 active subscriptions, with CPQ and e-signature included. Usage-based pricing and revenue recognition start on the quoted Growth plan. It is not designed for consumer checkouts.

Switch from Recurly if a B2B software company wants quotes, invoices and dunning in one tool at a published entry price.

Hyperline, #5 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Frisbii (formerly Billwerk+)

Germany · Starter EUR 49 and Growth EUR 299 a month plus 0.95% of billings; Scale by quote

Frisbii, formerly Billwerk+, is run by Frisbii Germany GmbH in Frankfurt and includes a payment gateway with more than 50 European payment methods. Starter shows at EUR 49 monthly and Growth at EUR 299, each adding a 0.95% fee on processed invoices. Scale is quoted. The product leans toward European markets.

Switch from Recurly if billing is mostly in Europe and direct debit and local payment methods matter more than card retries.

Frisbii (formerly Billwerk+), #2 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Younium

Sweden · Quoted for each organisation

Younium, founded in Stockholm in 2017, is aimed at B2B SaaS and covers CPQ, amendments, renewals and revenue recognition. Customers choose an EU or US hosting region at onboarding. We found no public price list, so the cost arrives through a sales conversation, and it carries none of Recurly's DTC retention tooling.

Switch from Recurly if you sell negotiated annual contracts to businesses and need EU-hosted data.

Younium, #3 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Sequence

United Kingdom · Growth plan published monthly; higher plans by quote

Sequence sells quote-to-revenue: native invoicing, usage metering, advanced pricing models and ERP and CRM connectors are included in the Growth plan at $799 a month for companies with under $1 million in annual revenue. The quote builder and custom reporting are paid add-ons. Larger plans are quoted.

Switch from Recurly if the pricing is negotiated per deal and sales needs to feed billing directly.

Sequence, #7 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Maxio

United States · Grow tier at $599 a month to $100k monthly billings; Scale by quote

Maxio lists Grow at $599 monthly up to $100,000 of monthly billings, with Scale quoted above. All plans bundle usage-based billing, subscription management, collections, dunning and 20+ payment gateways, and its pages add revenue recognition and A/R management. It serves B2B finance teams, not consumer churn tactics.

Switch from Recurly if the finance team wants billing and revenue recognition together at a flat monthly price.

Maxio, #11 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Zuora

United States · Revenue-linked quote for each organisation

Zuora is an enterprise billing platform whose product pages talk of automating the quote-to-revenue process and managing hundreds of thousands of subscriptions at once. We found no published prices on the pages we reached. Expect a longer implementation than a self-serve tool and a contract sized to a large estate.

Switch from Recurly if many products, currencies and revenue rules need one system of record and you can fund the project.

Zuora, #15 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Lago

United States · Free open source; hosted cloud quoted by organisation

Lago's billing engine is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence (on its GitHub organisation) and can be self-hosted, with a managed Lago Cloud alongside. Premium features such as entitlements, prepaid credits and multiple billing entities are quoted on request. It is a developer product with no consumer churn tooling.

Switch from Recurly if engineers want to rate usage on their own infrastructure and keep the event data.

Lago, #1 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Orb

United States · Quoted for each organisation

Orb is built for usage-based billing: real-time event ingestion, plan versions, simulations of a price change on real customer data and prepaid credits. Its Business plan is shown as priced per credit, listed at $6.00 a credit before volume discounts, and Enterprise is custom. It assumes your application emits clean usage events.

Switch from Recurly if price is set by consumption and changes more than once a year.

Orb, #6 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Metronome

United States · Starter charges 0.8% of billing volume plus $0.04 per 1,000 events; Custom is quoted

Metronome's pricing page says it now belongs to Stripe. Starter takes 0.8% of billing volume plus $0.04 for every 1,000 events ingested and integrates natively with Stripe; Custom adds Salesforce, NetSuite and cloud-marketplace invoicing. It meters and invoices usage, and does not handle dunning or churn.

Switch from Recurly if usage metering for a usage-priced product comes first and Stripe already collects payment.

Metronome, #13 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Solvimon

Netherlands · AI Essentials free on the first $3M for eligible AI startups, then 0.4%; Growth from $2,500 monthly; Enterprise by quote

Solvimon presents itself as the EU option and targets transaction-heavy pricing. Qualifying AI startups pay nothing on the first $3 million of volume through the AI Essentials tier, then 0.4%; Growth starts at $2,500 monthly; payments route through Stripe and Adyen, including iDEAL and SEPA. It is a young product with few references.

Switch from Recurly if you bill per transaction or per token and want a European vendor.

Solvimon, #8 of 15 in our subscription management ranking →

Recharge

United States · Published monthly plans plus a per-transaction fee

Recharge sits closer to Recurly Commerce than to the core Recurly product: it adds subscriptions to Shopify stores with a customer portal, bundles and churn prevention. Starter costs $99 monthly plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction, and Plus $499 monthly. B2B contracts and seat billing are a poor match.

Switch from Recurly if you are a Shopify brand selling physical goods on a repeat schedule.

When Recurly is still the right choice

Recurly remains the sensible choice when the business is consumer or prosumer subscriptions and recovering failed payments is where revenue is won. The published Starter plan gives a number before a sales call, the first $40,000 of monthly billings carries no percentage fee, and a 90-day free trial lets a team test dunning and plan changes on real traffic. If your pricing is flat plans and your billing volume is still modest, a quote-led or usage-first tool would add features you will not use.

05

What moving off Recurly involves

  1. 01

Dunning and retry rules do not travel

Retry schedules, pause offers and cancellation flows are configured inside Recurly. Document today's recovery rate before you move, then rebuild the rules in the new tool and compare after one full billing cycle. The tools built for B2B contracts generally handle failed payments with simpler reminders.

  2. 02

Payment tokens belong to the gateway

Recurly connects to 20+ payment gateways by its own account of the product. Stored cards live at the gateway, so ask whether the new vendor can use your existing tokens or whether customers must re-enter details. Where cards cannot be carried over, plan the cutover around renewal dates so as few subscribers as possible are asked to re-authorise.

  3. 03

Run both systems for one cycle

Invoices, credits and tax history need to reconcile with the ledger. Keep Recurly live for existing subscribers, start new customers in the replacement, and migrate in batches by renewal month. Check the contract's notice terms first, because the quoted All-Access plan is billed annually.

Questions about replacing Recurly

6 answers
What is the closest alternative to Recurly?

For recurring B2B billing with a published price, Hyperline, Maxio and Sequence are the nearest in our ranking. For consumer subscriptions on Shopify, Recharge is the closest. For European payment methods and direct debit, Frisbii fits better.

Is there a free or open source alternative to Recurly?

Lago is the open source entry: its engine is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted, though a team then runs it. Solvimon waives its fee on the first $3 million of volume for qualifying AI startups. Neither replaces Recurly's retry tooling for consumer churn.

Which alternative suits usage-based pricing?

Orb, Metronome and Lago are designed around metered events. Hyperline and Sequence handle usage alongside quotes. Recurly's All-Access plan is also positioned for hybrid models, so check what your pricing needs before assuming a move is required.

Do these tools publish their prices?

Several do: Hyperline Launch at $299 a month, Frisbii Starter at EUR 49, Sequence Growth at $799, Maxio Grow at $599 and Recharge Starter at $99.

Zuora, Younium and the larger plans elsewhere are quoted. Treat any published figure as the entry plan, since fees tied to billing volume rise with revenue.

How is Recurly priced compared with these?

Recurly's Starter plan combines $249 a month with 0.9% of billing volume above $40,000 a month.

Hyperline and Frisbii also pair a monthly fee with a percentage, while Maxio and Sequence charge a flat monthly figure on their published plans. Compare them at your own billing volume, not at the entry price.

Where do Chargebee and Stripe Billing fit?

Both are common comparisons but sit in other categories of our ranking, so they are not listed here. Our Chargebee alternatives page covers that tool from the other side.
