TaxJar vs Avalara

Both calculate US sales tax and file returns, and both now publish prices. TaxJar is for the US online shop: checkout rates, nexus tracking and automatic filing, from $39 a month by order volume. Avalara is the broader engine with over 1,400 partner integrations, priced per state for smaller sellers, and adds VAT reporting and e-invoicing in dozens of countries.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

  1. 01

Knowing the price before you buy

TaxJar lists Starter at $39 a month and Professional at $99 a month at 200 orders a month, rising with order volume. Avalara now lists Avalara Select for businesses under $50M in annual revenue at $79 per state per month or $799 per state per year, with custom quotes above that. Both can be budgeted without a sales call, on different bases.

    Depends on the buyer

What filing adds as you register in more states

TaxJar includes two AutoFile credits a year on Starter and four on Professional, then charges $50 or $55 per extra filing, so the bill climbs with each state and filing period. Avalara Select's per-state price already covers calculation, filing and remittance, so cost grows by state instead of by return. Sellers filing monthly in a few states should run both sums.

Connecting to the systems you already run

Avalara claims more than 1,400 signed partner integrations across ERP, e-commerce, procurement and point of sale, including NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Sage. TaxJar builds about fourteen itself, among them Shopify, Amazon, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, NetSuite and QuickBooks Online, plus certified partner connectors, and Starter allows three import integrations with no API. For an ERP or unusual channel Avalara reaches further.

    Anything beyond US sales tax

TaxJar's own site describes it as built for businesses that sell only in the United States, and points sellers with global obligations to Stripe Tax. Avalara lists VAT reporting for 48 countries, a managed VAT service for 53, and e-invoicing as a certified Peppol access point. A seller with obligations on both sides of the Atlantic gets coverage from Avalara only.

When neither fits

A European online seller, or anyone whose obligation is VAT returns instead of US sales tax, is outside what either does well. Quaderno plays the role for a European seller that TaxJar plays for an American one, and Taxdoo is a filing specialist for returns.

TaxJar or Avalara: questions

3 answers
Is TaxJar cheaper than Avalara?

It depends on how many states you file in. TaxJar starts at $39 a month for 200 orders with two filings a year included and $50 for each extra.

Avalara Select costs $79 per state per month, or $799 per state per year, with filing included. A low-volume seller starts lower on TaxJar; frequent filing narrows the gap.

Does TaxJar or Avalara handle European VAT?

TaxJar does not: its site says it covers US sales tax only. Avalara lists VAT reporting across 48 countries, managed VAT reporting across 53, and e-invoicing through the Peppol network in European countries and elsewhere.

For a business with real VAT obligations, only Avalara is an option of these two.

Who owns TaxJar, and does that matter when comparing it with Avalara?

TaxJar belongs to Stripe, and its site positions the two side by side: TaxJar for small and medium US-only sellers not using Stripe, Stripe Tax for businesses with global obligations on Stripe's payment products.

TaxJar also acts as the US filing partner for Stripe Tax, so the two roadmaps are linked.
