Avalara vs Vertex
Both are determination engines that decide the tax on a transaction as it happens. Avalara is the easy one to bolt on: a very long connector list, live in days, billed by transaction band plus returns filed. Vertex is the engine large SAP and Oracle estates standardise on, licensed annually per organisation and needing a tax department and months of integration.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.
you have US sales tax exposure, a standard ERP or shop, no dedicated tax function, and want correct rates calculated within days through an existing connector.
you are an enterprise running determination inside SAP or Oracle at volume, with a tax department and integration team, and need defensible, professionally maintained content behind every rate.

Where they differ

Days or months to go live
Avalara's connector list is effectively the product: whatever you sell through, an integration probably exists, and correct rates on US transactions take days. Vertex expects an integration team, and setup runs in months, not weeks. For a company that needs rates working soon and has no project capacity, Avalara is far quicker to value.

The people each one assumes you employ
Vertex assumes a tax manager is in place; a company without one tends to spend the first year finding rules that were configured wrong. Avalara is aimed at companies with a standard ERP or shop and makes no such demand. For mid-market buyers without a dedicated tax function, Avalara is the realistic choice and Vertex is not.

Determination at scale inside a large ERP
Vertex is where big SAP and Oracle estates settle when determination must happen inside the ERP at volume, backed by rate and rule content maintained by people who track changes for a living. Avalara is the default for US sales tax on standard systems. For an enterprise needing every rate to be defensible, Vertex's research operation is the stronger asset.

How the bill grows
Avalara counts transactions and bills returns filing as a separate line, so a business with many low-value sales pays for tax calls it barely needed. Vertex is quoted per organisation as an annual licence, which avoids a per-call charge but hides the growth curve until renewal. High-volume, low-value sellers suffer on Avalara; others may prefer its visible meter.
Depends on the buyer
When neither fits
For a European seller whose problem is an e-invoicing mandate or late VAT returns, neither is the answer: both added European e-invoicing by acquisition and neither has fully integrated it. Marosa is a filing specialist for returns, and Storecove operates its own certified access point for transmission.
Avalara or Vertex: questions
3 answersIs Avalara or Vertex better for a mid-market company?
Avalara, in most cases. Vertex is not recommended for mid-market companies without a dedicated tax function, because it needs a tax department and integration capacity to run. Avalara attaches to a standard ERP or shop through a connector and calculates US rates within days.
How do Avalara and Vertex handle European e-invoicing?
Both reached it through acquisitions and neither has finished joining it up. Avalara's European VAT and e-invoicing still feel bolted on. Vertex gained a European e-invoicing access point through ecosio, which is not yet one product with its determination engine.
How does pricing differ between Avalara and Vertex?
Avalara quotes by transaction band plus a charge per return filed, so cost follows transaction count. Vertex quotes per organisation as an annual licence.
Neither publishes a price list, so model your real transaction volume for three years and ask Avalara for the overage rate above the band.
