REAPER vs FL Studio
REAPER is one unrestricted program whose licence price depends on how much you earn, at USD 60 or USD 225. FL Studio is sold in four editions where the price depends on which features you want, from USD 99. REAPER offers 60 days of full evaluation, while FL Studio's trial never ends but cannot reopen saved projects. Cockos shows a Rosendale, NY address and Image-Line is stated as Belgian, and both programs are desktop software.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
you record, edit and mix audio, already own plugins in VST, VST3, LV2, AU or CLAP formats, and want every function from the first day. You can also accept sourcing instruments elsewhere, since no bundled library is described.
you build beats or electronic tracks and prefer a one-time purchase with free updates to your edition. You will also choose Producer or above if you need audio recording, because the entry edition leaves it out.

Revenue-based licence against feature-based editions
REAPER has a single version. Its discounted licence costs USD 60 for personal use, education, non-profit or yearly gross revenue up to USD 20,000, and the commercial licence costs USD 225. FL Studio sells Fruity, Producer, Signature Bundle and All Plugins editions, with the page showing only a starting price of From $99. REAPER states both prices outright; FL Studio leaves the per-edition amounts unlisted on the page we read.

What happens when you try before buying
REAPER's evaluation is a full, unrestricted copy for 60 days, so a whole album can be started and continued. FL Studio's trial never expires and can export audio, yet saved .flp projects cannot be reopened, which forces you to finish within one sitting or unlock the program. For anyone who wants a real test over several weeks, REAPER's approach holds up better.

How long the price keeps covering you
A new REAPER licence includes free upgrades through version 8.99, is DRM-free, and the same key may be installed on several computers if used on one at a time. After 8.99 an upgrade is a new purchase. FL Studio is sold as a one-time purchase with lifetime free updates to the edition you bought, and Rent-to-Own Plus makes it yours after 12 monthly payments. Image-Line gives the firmer promise.

Tracking vocals and comping takes
REAPER lists multitrack audio and MIDI recording, track lanes with swipe comping, razor edits, FX containers with parallel plug-in routing and 64-bit internal audio processing, all in its single edition. In FL Studio, audio recording and Automation Clips arrive only with Producer Edition and above, so the Fruity edition cannot record a vocal. REAPER wins this round for recording at its lowest price.

Sounds and instruments on day one
REAPER bundles a ReaLimit limiter and a ReaSurroundPan 3D panner, but the pages we read describe no instrument library, so sounds come from third parties. FL Studio adds Edison and Newtime at Producer, Gross Beat in Signature Bundle and Harmor in All Plugins, and its FL Cloud library is described as holding over 2 million samples, continuing until cancelled. Beatmakers get more out of the box here.

Where the company sits and where the software runs
Cockos Incorporated is shown at PO Box 298, Rosendale, NY 12472, and our data lists the United States. Image-Line NV is stated as Belgian, and the legal page says FL Studio is built in Belgium. FL Studio runs on Windows and macOS; REAPER can run from a portable or network drive. Neither page states a hosting model. Belgium suits buyers who want a European vendor.

When neither fits
If you want an open-source DAW whose code you can inspect, or a free Mac starter, look at Ardour or GarageBand. Both fit those cases better than REAPER or FL Studio.
REAPER or FL Studio: questions
3 answersDoes a REAPER licence stop at some version number?
A new licence includes free upgrades through version 8.99. After that, an upgrade is a new purchase. The licence itself is described as DRM-free.
Can I pick up an FL Studio trial project the next evening?
Not in the trial. It never expires and exports audio, but saved .flp projects cannot be reopened until the program is unlocked. REAPER's 60-day evaluation has no such limit.
Which of these records vocals on the lowest-priced option?
REAPER does, since its single edition includes multitrack audio recording at either licence price. In FL Studio, audio recording starts at Producer Edition, and the Fruity edition lacks it. FL Studio's page shows only a starting price of From $99 for the editions.
