Logic Pro vs Ableton Live
Logic Pro and Ableton Live are both paid desktop studios, but they ask for different commitments. Apple sells Logic Pro for Mac as a single App Store purchase and also inside a subscription that adds the iPad app, while Ableton sells Live 12 in three editions with a rent-to-own route for the top one. Logic Pro runs only on Apple hardware; Live runs on Mac or Windows. The pick often comes down to your computer and whether you want one fixed price or a ladder of editions.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
you work on an Apple silicon Mac or an iPad and want one purchase that covers the full app, including Session Players and Stem Splitter. You are also fine with having no Windows version at all.
you use Windows, or a mix of Mac and Windows machines, and want to try the software for 30 days before choosing an edition. You also like the idea of owning a licence that installs on two of your own computers.

Which computers can run it
Logic Pro for Mac needs macOS 15.6 or later and Apple silicon, and the iPad version needs iPadOS 26 and an A12 Bionic chip or later. There is no Windows or Linux version, and Intel Macs are excluded. Ableton Live is available on Mac or Windows, according to its trial page. For anyone not already on a recent Mac, Ableton is the sole route of the pair.

Buy once or subscribe
Apple lists Logic Pro for Mac at a one-time App Store price of $199.99, or inside Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 monthly or $129 yearly. The subscription is the only way to get the iPad app. Ableton sells its editions as purchases, and offers 24 monthly payments for Suite only. Logic Pro gives a buyer both a plain purchase and a subscription for the same app.

Trying before paying
New subscribers to Apple Creator Studio get a 30-day trial that includes Logic Pro, and the one-time purchase has no trial listed on the page we read. Ableton offers a free 30-day trial of Live 12 Suite, its top edition, so a buyer can test every feature including Max for Live before choosing between Intro, Standard and Suite. Ableton's trial is the more direct test of what a buyer would own.

Limits that depend on the edition
Logic Pro is sold as one app, so the page lists Drum Machine Designer, Quick Sampler, Step Sequencer, Session Players, Stem Splitter, Mastering Assistant and Dolby Atmos without edition tiers. Ableton splits Live 12: Intro allows 16 audio and MIDI tracks and 8 instruments, Standard has unlimited tracks, and Max for Live belongs to Suite. A buyer of Live must pick carefully, while Logic Pro has no such choice to make.

Licence and installs
Ableton states that a Live licence is registered to a single user and can be installed on up to two of that user's computers. The Apple page we read does not describe an install count for the App Store purchase. Because Live can be rented to own only at Suite level, a buyer wanting the cheapest edition pays in full. This round favours Ableton on stated terms, since its licence rules are written out.

Who sells it and where
Logic Pro is sold by Apple Inc., whose terms give One Apple Park Way, Cupertino, California as the address. Ableton AG is registered at Schoenhauser Allee 6-7 in Berlin, Germany, at Amtsgericht Berlin-Charlottenburg under HRB 72838, and its footer reads Made in Berlin. For buyers who prefer a German vendor to a US one, Ableton fits. For others, the difference may not matter.

When neither fits
If you want a low entry price or a free route, neither is built for it. REAPER is listed in the same category as a different kind of option, and Bitwig Studio is another clip-based studio to compare with Live.
Logic Pro or Ableton Live: questions
3 answersCan Logic Pro be used on a Windows laptop?
No. The Apple page lists a Mac version needing Apple silicon and an iPad version, and names no Windows or Linux release. Anyone on Windows would need a different studio.
Does the Ableton trial give the full program or a cut-down one?
The trial page offers Live 12 Suite for 30 days, which is the top edition with Max for Live. Intro and Standard are lower editions with fewer tracks or instruments. So the trial shows more than the cheapest edition would.
Is the Apple Creator Studio price the same as buying Logic Pro outright?
No, they are two routes to the same app. The one-time price is $199.99 for Mac, while the subscription costs $129 yearly or $12.99 monthly and adds the iPad version. Over a few years a yearly subscription would pass the one-time price.
