Logic Pro alternatives: 11 music production tools compared

People look for a Logic Pro alternative because they use Windows or Linux as well as a Mac, because their Mac is too old for the current release, or because they would rather not tie a studio to one hardware maker. Others want a different workflow, such as clip launching, patterns or a tracker, or a cheaper start.

Short answer: Bitwig Studio, Renoise and REAPER head the list of Logic Pro alternatives drawn from our music production software ranking. We open the ranking with smaller vendors and put the established brands from fourth place onward. Bitwig Studio is the one to try if you want one DAW on Mac, Windows and Linux with modular sound design. Every one of the 11 products below comes from Best Music Production Software in 2026, with a note on how it departs from Logic Pro.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Logic Pro

#11 of 12 in our music production software ranking

  • Pricing: One-time App Store price or Apple Creator Studio subscription; 30-day trial
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Mac users who want a full production suite for a one-time price
  • Not for: Windows or Linux users, and buyers with Intel-based Macs
01

Why buyers look past Logic Pro

  1. 01

It only runs on Apple hardware

Apple's Logic Pro page lists macOS 15.6 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon, and iPadOS 26 on an iPad with an A12 Bionic chip or later. A studio with a Windows machine, an older Intel Mac or a collaborator on Linux cannot open the same project natively.

  2. 02

Two ways to pay, one account

The Mac app is a one-time purchase at 199.99 dollars, with MainStage at 29.99 dollars on top. The Creator Studio subscription costs 12.99 dollars a month or 129 dollars a year and adds the iPad version. Which is cheaper depends on how long you keep paying, and the iPad edition needs the subscription.

  3. 03

    Some features need newer machines

Apple states that Session Players on iPad need an M1 chip or later. The AI tools on the Logic Pro page, such as Stem Splitter and Chord ID, depend on what your hardware and operating system support, so an older machine may not get the full list.

What each one does differently

Bitwig Studio

Germany · Published

Bitwig is sold in euros at 99 for Essentials, 199 for Producer and 399 for Studio, and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Every purchase carries 12 months of free updates. Its modular Grid sits in the top edition, so a producer who liked Logic's synths for sound design should compare editions before paying.

Switch from Logic Pro if you want one DAW on Mac, Windows and Linux with modular sound design.

Renoise

Germany · Published

Renoise is a tracker, where notes are entered in vertical columns rather than drawn on a piano roll. The licence page shows 76 euros or 88 dollars plus VAT for versions 3.5.4 to 4.5.4. The demo's limits were not stated on the page we read, so test export before you buy.

Switch from Logic Pro if you would trade the Logic arranger for a pattern-column workflow.

REAPER

United States · Published

REAPER has one edition at two prices: 60 dollars for personal use, non-profits or revenue up to 20,000 dollars a year, and 225 dollars above that. The evaluation runs 60 days with full function, and a new licence covers upgrades through version 8.99. You assemble your own instruments and plugins.

Switch from Logic Pro if you want a low licence cost and are happy to build your own toolset.

Ardour

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Ardour is licensed under the GNU Public License version 2 and offers ready-to-run builds for Linux, macOS and Windows. The download page leaves building from source to you and says it gives no help with that. It is a recording and mixing tool, closer to a classic console than to Logic's loop and beat features.

Switch from Logic Pro if you record and mix live instruments and want source code you can inspect.

Waveform

United States · Published

Waveform Free is described as an unlimited free DAW with 14 audio effects, 8 MIDI effects and 4 instruments, and it accepts VST, VST3 and AU plugins. Paid expansions begin at 30 dollars and add items such as a clip launcher. Pro unlocks automatically on Linux, and a 30-day Pro trial is offered.

Switch from Logic Pro if you want to start at no cost and add paid features one at a time.

Our music production software guide puts Waveform at 7 of 12; read why →

Ableton Live

Germany · Published

Live 12 costs 79 euros for Intro, 279 for Standard and 599 for Suite, and Intro stops at 16 audio and MIDI tracks. Rent-to-own exists for Suite at 24.96 euros a month. It runs on macOS 11 and Windows 10 or later, so older Macs that Logic excludes still qualify.

Switch from Logic Pro if you perform or sketch with clips and need support for an older Mac.

FL Studio

Belgium · Published

Image-Line sells Fruity, Producer, Signature Bundle and All Plugins, and promises lifetime free updates in every edition. Audio recording starts at Producer, which also adds stem separation. It runs on Windows and macOS with the same features, and rent-to-own is offered. Edition prices were not shown on the pages we read.

Switch from Logic Pro if you build beats in patterns and want updates without a renewal.

Reason

Sweden · Published

Reason Studios is a Swedish company whose Reason 14 and Reason Rack plugin are sold separately. The home page showed a sale on both but not the regular prices, and it names VST3, AU and AAX for the plugin. Devices from the shop are bought individually, so budget beyond the base licence.

Switch from Logic Pro if you like a rack of patchable devices and may also want the plugin inside another DAW.

Mixcraft

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Acoustica's Mixcraft 10.6 runs on 64-bit Windows only. Recording Studio starts at 79 dollars with unlimited tracks, Pro Studio costs 149 dollars, and payment plans begin at 8 dollars a month. A Recording Studio demo is offered. It is a plain choice for a Windows-only home studio.

Switch from Logic Pro if you have moved to a Windows PC and want a modest price.

LMMS

Not stated by the vendor · Published

LMMS is free to download for Linux, Windows and macOS. The download page offers 1.2.2, released on 25 June 2020, as the stable version, and a 1.3.0 alpha that may crash and cannot be opened in older versions. It focuses on beats, synthesizers and a piano roll rather than audio recording.

Switch from Logic Pro if you only need free beat-making and accept an older stable release.

LMMS comes 10 of 12 when music production software products are ranked here →

GarageBand

United States · Published

GarageBand is Apple's own entry-level app, free on the Mac App Store with macOS 15.6 or later. It includes Drummer with 28 drummers and three percussionists. It stays inside Apple's ecosystem, so it does not solve a platform problem, but it costs nothing for someone who found Logic too large.

Switch from Logic Pro if Logic is more than you need and you remain on a Mac.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You moved to Windows or Linux and want the same DAW on every machine

Bitwig Studio: It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux from 99 euros, with 12 months of updates included.

  2. 02

You want the lowest licence cost without losing features

REAPER: One edition at 60 dollars for personal use or revenue up to 20,000 dollars a year, with a 60-day full evaluation.

  3. 03

You want to start with no cost and add features later

Waveform: Waveform Free is unlimited and takes VST3 and AU plugins, with paid expansions from 30 dollars.

  4. 04

Your Mac is too old for Logic but you still want clip launching

Ableton Live: Live 12 lists macOS 11 as its minimum, from 79 euros for Intro with a 16 track limit.

  5. 05

You record and mix live instruments and want inspectable source

Ardour: It is licensed under GPL version 2 and has builds for Linux, macOS and Windows.

04

When Logic Pro is still the right choice

Logic Pro is a sound choice if you work on a recent Mac, want a large library of instruments and effects included, and prefer to pay once. Apple lists Dolby Atmos mixing with ADM export, Live Loops, Flex Time and Pitch, and Logic Remote for iPhone and iPad. Few rivals bundle that much for 199.99 dollars, so a move needs a platform or workflow reason.

05

What moving off Logic Pro involves

  1. 01

Projects do not open in other DAWs

Logic projects are not read by the alternatives, so plan to export stems or MIDI per track. Bounce each track at the same start point, and note tempo maps and key changes by hand. Audio from Apple's own plugins will be printed, but their settings will not carry over.

  2. 02

Plugins and sound libraries need checking

Instruments such as Alchemy and the Sound Library are part of Logic, so a new DAW will need substitutes. List which of your sounds depend on them, and print those parts to audio before you cancel a subscription or stop updating macOS.

Questions about replacing Logic Pro

6 answers
How much does Logic Pro cost?

Apple lists Logic Pro for Mac at 199.99 dollars as a one-time purchase and MainStage at 29.99 dollars. The Creator Studio subscription is 12.99 dollars a month or 129 dollars a year, with a lower rate for students and educators.

Is there a free trial?

New Creator Studio subscribers get one month free, and Apple adds three months with a new Mac or iPad under conditions. Apple's page states a 30-day trial for the subscription, so check the live offer.

Does Logic Pro run on Windows?

The pages we read list only Mac and iPad requirements. The Mac version needs macOS 15.6 or later and Apple silicon, so people on Windows look to Bitwig, Ableton Live, FL Studio, REAPER or Mixcraft.

Which alternative is free?

Waveform Free, LMMS and GarageBand cost nothing to download, and Ardour is open source under the GNU GPL version 2. REAPER is not free but offers a 60-day full evaluation.

Which alternatives run on Linux?

Bitwig Studio, REAPER, Ardour, Waveform and LMMS list Linux builds. Ableton Live, FL Studio and Renoise's pages we read did not name Linux, so confirm before buying.

Do I lose my plugin settings if I leave?

Third-party plugins in VST3 or AU format can load in several alternatives, such as Waveform. Logic's own instruments and effects do not leave Logic, so print those tracks to audio first.
