Both have a free route and published prices, which is rare in ERP. Odoo is a modular suite with an open source Community core and a paid edition from €19.90 per user a month. ERPNext is fully open source under AGPL-3.0, free to self-host, with managed hosting priced per site, not per user. Convenience favours Odoo; ownership favours ERPNext.

How open the code is
ERPNext is licensed under AGPL-3.0 in full, so every module can be installed, read and modified without a paid tier. Odoo comes in two versions: Community, which is open source, and Enterprise, which is licensed and built on that core, with on-premise hosting and Studio reserved for the Custom plan. A buyer for whom owning the whole system is the point gets more from ERPNext.

The first week
Odoo Online lets a company start with one app free for unlimited users and add more under a paid plan, with hosting, maintenance and email support included. ERPNext can be hosted on Frappe Cloud, which handles installation, upgrades and backups, but self-hosting relies on documentation and the community forum. For a team with no engineers, Odoo is the shorter path to a working system.

How the licence is counted
Odoo charges per user: Standard is €19.90 per user a month on yearly billing for the first twelve months, against a regular €24.90, and Custom starts at €35.90. ERPNext has no per-user fee at all: self-hosting is free, and Frappe Cloud bills hosting per site from $5 a month or per server from $20. As headcount rises, ERPNext's licence cost stays flat while Odoo's grows.

Depth for demanding industries
Neither is the specialist's choice. Odoo's modules are shallower than dedicated products and it is not recommended for complex shop-floor scheduling. ERPNext's industry depth varies sharply by country and it is not recommended for a regulated manufacturer needing certified local compliance. Each trades depth for openness and price, in different places.

Neither suits a manufacturer with complex shop-floor scheduling or certified compliance needs, where both products are explicitly the wrong fit. Epicor Kinetic is strong in manufacturing, and IFS Cloud in service and asset-heavy industries; both are quoted per organisation.

Which is safer to customise, Odoo or ERPNext?
Odoo includes version upgrades in its paid plans, but maintenance of custom code is excluded, and a database with custom modules cannot be upgraded until those modules exist for the target version.
ERPNext on Frappe Cloud has managed upgrades and allows scripting and custom apps. Either way, keep changes small and documented.
