Groups look beyond Splitwise when the pages they read do not tell them what Pro costs, when the features they need on a trip sit behind the paid tier, or when they would rather keep shared bills with a vendor in Europe or on a server they control. The options run from no-account web apps to self-hosted software.
Short answer: SplitPro, Kittysplit and Spliit head the list of Splitwise alternatives drawn from our expense splitting apps ranking. Ranking order favours the challenger over the household name, so the best-known vendors begin at place 4 where the category allows it. SplitPro is the one to try if you want to bring your Splitwise history along and keep the option to host it. Below are 10 alternatives, each taken from the Best Expense Splitting Apps in 2026 ranking, with its main difference from Splitwise.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
Pricing: Free core on iPhone, Android and web; paid Pro upgrade with no prices listed
Established in: United States
Built for: Groups already using its apps, API, Splitwise Pay or Splitwise Card
Not for: Buyers wanting a published price before they upgrade
01
Why buyers look past Splitwise
01
The price of Pro is not on the pages we read
Splitwise is described as free for iPhone, Android and web, and a Pro upgrade is promoted. Both pricing addresses we tried, splitwise.com/pricing and secure.splitwise.com/pricing, returned 404, and the home page gives no price, currency or billing period. A group cannot work out the cost of Pro from what we could read.
02
Travel features are named as Pro
The home page lists receipt scanning, charts and graphs, and currency conversion as Pro features. Our earlier read of the same page adds transaction import, itemisation and an ad-free experience. Core splitting by percentage, shares or unequal amounts is free, so the question is which of the paid extras your trip needs.
03
The operator is American and the page says little more
The terms name Splitwise Inc. and apply Massachusetts law, and the footer reads 'Made with :) in Providence, RI, USA'. No parent company is named. For an organisation that wants its group finances with a European operator, that is a reason to compare, not proof of a problem.

SplitPro
Not stated by the vendor · Published
SplitPro is MIT-licensed code by KM Koushik that you can open in a browser or host yourself. It brings in friends, groups and balances from a Splitwise JSON backup, handles 100+ currencies with balances kept separately, and sets no daily expense limit. Phones get a home-screen shortcut rather than a store app, and the page names no country.
Switch from Splitwise if you want to bring your Splitwise history along and keep the option to host it.
Kittysplit UG of Berlin asks for no registration or password. Each group, called a Kitty, is free for up to nine people; a single payment of EUR 2.99 per group lifts the limit to 100 and adds currency conversion, receipt attachments and read-only links. Apps for iPhone and Android exist beside the browser version.
Switch from Splitwise if you want a German company, a flat per-group fee and no accounts.
Spliit comes from Sebastien Castiel and contributors in Montreal and runs on donations through Open Collective. It needs no account, shows no ads and has a native iPhone app that syncs through iCloud. Expenses can recur, carry receipt images and use a beta AI scanner. The code is public, but the page names no licence.
Switch from Splitwise if you want a donation-funded tool without sign-up that has an iPhone app.
Cospend is an AGPL-3.0 app inside Nextcloud, so it exists only where someone runs a Nextcloud server. Projects can be shared with users, groups or password-protected public links, and CSV files from Splitwise or IHateMoney import. No hosted service or price is stated. An Android client, Cowspent, is a separate app.
Switch from Splitwise if your group or organisation already hosts Nextcloud.
Splitser, which cites 5 million users, offers lists for trips, households or teams on Android, iOS and the web. Its settlement algorithm trims the number of transfers, and members can repay through iDEAL, Wero or Bancontact. It covers 150+ currencies. The page lists no plans or prices and does not name an owner or country.
Switch from Splitwise if your group pays with iDEAL, Wero or Bancontact.
Tricount calls itself free, ad-free and without limits, with no paid tier listed. A group records who paid, balances show who owes what, and payment requests show who still has to settle. The imprint says bunq B.V. in Amsterdam provides the site, and a connected bunq Card can log shared spending automatically. It also imports Splitwise groups.
Switch from Splitwise if you want a free app run from the Netherlands and may use a bunq card.
VuxByte LLC operates SplitMyExpenses, with no country stated. The free plan allows 10 recurring expenses and Premium costs 3.99 dollars a month, though the page shows only a dollar sign without naming a currency. Premium lifts recurring expenses to 100 and adds AI receipt scanning. Settling up can run through Venmo, Cash App, PayPal or Zelle.
Switch from Splitwise if your group settles through US payment apps and wants six split types.
Splitkaro is free for unlimited expenses and friends, with a Premium tier that adds bank auto-import, multi-currency trips, receipt OCR and exports. Auto-import reads bank SMS, card emails and UPI notifications. It also keeps GST-tagged books for small teams. No owner, country or Premium price appears on the page.
Switch from Splitwise if you split costs in India and want bank messages imported.
The Splid imprint names Nicolas Jersch as operator at a Munich address, and the homepage offers German and English. That is all we could confirm: the homepage is a logo and links, the English path returned an error, and no price, platform or feature list could be read. Look at the app yourself before deciding.
Switch from Splitwise if you want a Munich-based individual operator and will check the app first.
Venmo is a payments app in which splitting group expenses is one listed feature, next to a debit card, a credit card and crypto trading. The page refers to US residency requirements and gives no price for splitting. It describes no trip groups, categories or currency handling, so it fits only a US group that already pays through it.
Switch from Splitwise if everyone in your group lives in the United States and already uses Venmo.
You want to import your Splitwise backup and keep hosting open
SplitPro: It reads a Splitwise JSON backup, carries an MIT licence and offers a self-hosted copy.
02
You want one small fee per trip and no accounts
Kittysplit: A Kitty is free up to nine people, and EUR 2.99 once per group lifts the limit to 100.
03
Your friends repay through a Dutch or Belgian bank
Splitser: Members can repay via iDEAL, Wero or Bancontact and get a notification when money arrives.
04
You run Nextcloud already
Cospend: It installs from the Nextcloud app store under AGPL-3.0 and imports Splitwise CSV files.
05
You want an ad-free tool funded by donations
Spliit: It needs no account, shows no ads and has an iPhone app that syncs through iCloud.
04
When Splitwise is still the right choice
Splitwise is still a reasonable pick when your group already keeps its history there and the free tier covers what you do. The home page names equal and unequal splits, percentages, shares, simplified debts, recurring expenses, offline mode and 100+ currencies, and it lists a public API. If Pro buys you scanning or conversion, ask for the price in the app before leaving.
05
What moving off Splitwise involves
01
Take the history with you
Several alternatives read Splitwise data: SplitPro imports a JSON backup, Cospend takes CSV, and Tricount lists Splitwise group import. Export first, import a test group, then compare balances person by person.
02
Members must agree on one app
A shared ledger only works if everyone enters costs in the same place. Move at the end of a trip or a billing month, once balances are settled, so no debts sit in two tools.
03
Receipts and currencies need a check
Receipt scanning and currency conversion are Pro features at Splitwise, and some alternatives put them behind a paid step too. Kittysplit's free Kitty has no conversion, for example. Test a foreign-currency expense before the trip.

Questions about replacing Splitwise
6 answers
What does Splitwise Pro cost?
We could not read a price. The home page promotes Pro without a price, currency or billing period, and the two pricing addresses we tried returned 404. The app or the live site is the place to see the current figure.
Is Splitwise free?
The home page says it is free for iPhone, Android and web. It lists unlimited expenses among its features without tying them to a plan, and it names receipt scanning, charts and graphs, and currency conversion as Pro features.
Which alternative needs no account?
Kittysplit asks for no registration or password, Spliit states no ads and no account, and SplitPro offers a quick split without signing up. Cospend needs a Nextcloud login on the server that hosts it.
Can I host the app myself?
SplitPro says you can self-host your own copy, and Cospend runs inside your own Nextcloud server under AGPL-3.0. Spliit's source is public on GitHub, but the page gives no hosting instructions.
Which options show a clear price?
Kittysplit lists EUR 2.99 once per group beyond nine people, and SplitMyExpenses lists 3.99 dollars a month for Premium. Tricount and SplitPro state no paid tier, while Splitkaro and Splitwise name a paid tier without a price.
Do any of these suit a group paying by iDEAL?
Splitser says members can repay through iDEAL, Wero or Bancontact and receive notifications when money arrives. Tricount connects to the bunq Card, a separate product with its own terms.
