Splitwise vs Tricount
Splitwise and Tricount both split shared costs for trips and flats, yet they sell the idea differently. Splitwise keeps basic tracking free on iPhone, Android and web, then holds receipt scanning, charts and currency conversion back for a Pro tier whose price the pages we read never state. Tricount calls itself free with no ads and no limits, and lists no paid tier at all. Tricount also links itself to the bunq card, while Splitwise leans on its own Pay, Card and public API. Neither page is fully clear about who stands behind the product.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
you want itemised splits, percentage or share splits and a public API, and you accept that the Pro upgrade has no price on the pages we read. You are also fine with a US-made product from Splitwise Inc.
you want a tool that states it is free, with no ads and no limits, and you like payment requests that show who still owes you. You are comfortable that the imprint names bunq B.V. in Amsterdam.

Where they differ
Splitwise 1 · Tricount 3 · open 2- 01
Receipt scanning sits behind Pro
Splitwise names receipt scanning, charts and graphs, currency conversion, transaction import, itemization and an ad-free experience as Pro features, while core expense tracking stays free. The pages give no Pro price, no currency and no billing period, and the pricing address we tried returned a 404. A traveller cannot work out the cost of the features that matter abroad. Tricount lists no tiers, so nothing is locked. Tricount wins this round on clarity. Tricount wins on clarity.

Dividing a bill by shares or percentage
Splitwise offers equal or unequal splits, splits by percentage or by shares, default splits and debt simplification, plus recurring expenses and categories. Tricount lets you add expenses, choose who is included and record who paid, then shows balances. Percentage or share splits are not mentioned for it, so uneven households may miss them. Splitwise takes the point. Default splits also save retyping the same ratio each week, which suits flatmates paying recurring bills. Splitwise takes the point.

Chasing the friend who has not paid
Tricount sends payment requests: you ask friends for their share and see who has paid or needs a reminder. Splitwise lets you record cash or online payments and names payment integrations, though the pages do not say which services. It also ships Splitwise Pay and a Splitwise Card. For plain reminders about unpaid shares, Tricount describes the more direct feature, built around a reminder. For recording settlements through a payment partner or in cash, Splitwise lists more options, so neither side wins outright.

Cash in several currencies, offline
Splitwise states 100+ currencies and 7+ languages, with offline mode and cloud sync, but currency conversion is listed among Pro features. Tricount's comparison table lists currency conversion as included, with multi-currency support and offline use available, and says you can import a Splitwise group. For a group splitting a holiday across borders, the table makes Tricount the easier call, since the pages show no paywall around conversion. Splitwise states the larger language and currency counts, but its conversion feature sits in a paid tier.

A bunq card that logs spending for you
Tricount says a connected bunq Card adds shared expenses automatically as you spend, and it promotes a separate bunq Free card with no monthly fee, subject to other fees and eligibility. Splitwise has no card-linked logging on the pages we read, but it sells its own Splitwise Card and Splitwise Pay. Each ties the app to a payment product. The choice depends on which financial brand you would rather connect to your shared spending. It only helps people holding the card.

Who is behind the app
Splitwise names Splitwise Inc., states Massachusetts law in its terms, and the footer says it is made in Providence, Rhode Island, without stating a country. A footer links a Coastal Community Bank privacy policy without explanation. Tricount's imprint says the site is provided by bunq B.V. at an Amsterdam address with a Dutch Chamber of Commerce number, yet the home page names no owner, operator or country. Tricount's imprint is the more concrete. Both stop short of naming an ultimate owner.

When neither fits
If you want a European-run split tool with a clearer stated structure, look at Splid or Kittysplit. Both appear in our expense splitting list, and you should check their own pages for limits and prices before choosing.
