Alternatives to Power BI are mostly sought by two groups: companies that do not run on Microsoft and get little from the Excel and Microsoft 365 ties, and organisations that have grown into capacity licensing and sprawling workspaces. Power BI Pro is listed at $14 per user per month and Premium Per User at $24, both paid yearly. Letting people read reports without a paid licence needs a Fabric capacity of F64 or above, which Microsoft prices as variable. Once a deployment reaches that tier the comparison with other vendors is no longer about a small monthly fee per person, and buyers reopen the shortlist.
Governance across dozens of workspaces becomes a job in itself. Organisations that reach this stage, with nobody sure which report holds the agreed figure, start looking at products where metric definitions are written once, kept in version control and reviewed before they change, as Looker does with LookML projects stored in Git repositories.
The Excel bridge and the Microsoft 365 integration are what make adoption quick. A team working on Google or AWS with no Microsoft estate is left with DAX, a modelling language that takes real investment to learn, without the surrounding benefits that justify learning it.

Power BI remains the right answer for a company standardised on Microsoft whose analysts are at home in Excel. At $14 per user per month for Pro, and included in Microsoft 365 E5, it is hard to beat on seat price, and DAX repays the time spent learning it. If the deployment is small enough to stay on per-user licences and someone owns workspace hygiene, the alternatives cost more for little gain.
DAX is a formula language used in Microsoft's Analysis Services, Power BI and Power Pivot, and the other tools here do not speak it. Each measure is rewritten as SQL, as a definition in the new tool's semantic layer, or as a warehouse transformation. Count the measures first; that number sizes the project better than the number of reports.
Part of Power BI's value is the bridge to Excel, so people will have built routines around it. Find out which teams rely on that link before choosing a destination, because a tool without a spreadsheet-style interface may send them back to exported files.
If workspaces have drifted apart, migrating report by report copies the mess. Pick one agreed definition per metric, record who owns it, and rebuild from that list. This is slower at the start and is the only part of the migration that improves the numbers.
Metabase for quick self-service without a data team, Sigma if you have a cloud warehouse and spreadsheet-minded users, and Looker Studio if the data is mostly in Google Ads, Analytics and Sheets. A team on Google or AWS is the case Power BI fits least.
