Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) alternatives: 12 business intelligence tools compared
The typical searcher built free dashboards on Google's reporting tool, often on top of Google data sources, and then ran into the limits of a reporting layer with no modelling behind it. Some want governed metrics, some want to leave the Google ecosystem, others only want a different price model. They move to a full BI platform, an open-source tool, or a semantic-layer product.

Not for: A company building governed company-wide reporting
01
Why buyers look past Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio)
01
Free reporting is not a data model
Google's tool, now branded Data Studio (previously Looker Studio), is free for creators and report viewers and connects to data through built-in and partner connectors. It is a drag-and-drop report editor. Metric definitions live inside individual reports, so two dashboards can calculate the same number differently.
02
Teams and governance cost extra
Team content management, Google Cloud support and expanded administration sit in Data Studio Pro, priced at $9 per user per project per month. That is cheap per seat, but the per-project basis means the bill follows how many projects you split work into, and it still does not add a central semantic layer.
03
A reporting tool, not an analysis tool
Data Studio is positioned for visualisation and reporting. A team that wants to explore data, write queries, version its models or embed analytics in a product usually moves to a platform designed for those jobs, or to Google's own Looker, which has a modelling language (LookML) behind it.

Microsoft Power BI
United States · Per user per month, published; Fabric capacity billed separately by usage
The closest mass-market alternative: a free account to build reports, Pro at $14 per user per month and Premium Per User at $24 (both billed yearly). Pro adds sharing, and Premium raises model size and refresh limits. It is strongest in a Microsoft estate, and Fabric capacity is billed separately.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if your company runs on Microsoft 365 and you want governed data models.
United States · Free open source edition; paid cloud and self-hosted plans from $100 a month, published
An open-source tool with unlimited users, and paid cloud plans where Starter is about $90 a month with five users included (on yearly billing) and Pro about $517.50 with ten. Non-technical staff ask questions through a query builder, and there is a SQL editor. Self-hosting is possible, so you run it yourself.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if you want a free self-hosted option with a friendly question builder for non-analysts.
India · Free plan for 2 users and 10,000 rows; paid plans per month, published
A free Basic plan for two users and 0.5 million rows, then Standard (5 users, 1 million rows), Premium (15 users, 5 million rows) and Enterprise (50 users, 50 million rows). Limits are set by users and rows, not projects. It fits best inside the Zoho suite and has a 15-day trial.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if you need a bounded paid plan with row and user limits and already use Zoho.
United States · Free open source; you pay for hosting and operations
Open source under the Apache License 2.0 and designed for self-hosting, with no licence fee and no vendor support. It offers a no-code chart builder, SQL Lab, over 40 chart types and connections to 60+ SQL databases. You carry the operations work yourself, which Data Studio never asked of you.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if you have engineers to run it and want no licence cost or user limits.
United States · Per user per month by role, published; capacity-based viewer blocks on Tableau Cloud
A long-standing visual analytics product sold per user by role, with capacity-based options on Tableau Cloud (per the category data; we could not retrieve its pricing page for this review). It is built for deeper analysis than a reporting tool, and it costs far more than a free option.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if analysts need deep visual exploration and there is budget per seat.
United Kingdom · Free open source to self-host; Cloud Pro $3,000 a month flat with unlimited users, published
Requires dbt: the platform builds BI on your dbt models, with an open-source self-hosted version and a Cloud Pro plan at $3,000 a month with unlimited users and visualisations. It has a 21-day trial. There is no per-seat charge, but a team without dbt cannot use it.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if your transformations are already in dbt and you want metrics defined in code.
United States · Platform fee per edition plus per-user licences, quoted
Google's own enterprise platform, built around LookML, a modelling language that defines metrics once for the whole organisation, with embedded analytics. It sits in the Google Cloud ecosystem. The pricing page we retrieved was truncated, so check current terms; the category lists it as quoted.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if you want to stay with Google but need centrally governed metrics.
United States · Capacity-based by data volume, from $300 a month billed annually, published; Enterprise quoted
Capacity-based pricing in fixed monthly tiers: Starter $300 (10 users, 10 GB), Standard $825 (25 GB, unlimited users), Premium $2,750 (50 GB) and a custom Enterprise tier. You pay for data volume, not seats. The entry tier has community support only, and the model needs sizing up front.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if many viewers need access and you prefer paying for data capacity rather than seats.
United States · Per user per month from $25 billed annually, published; Enterprise quoted
Search and AI-agent driven analytics. Essentials starts at $25 per user per month on annual billing (5 to 50 users, 25M rows), Pro is priced per credit from $0.10, and Enterprise is custom. Embedded analytics has a free one-year developer plan. It aims at question answering, not pixel-level report design.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if business users should ask questions in natural language instead of building reports.
A warehouse-first product that queries live data in Snowflake, Databricks and similar systems through a spreadsheet-style interface, with write-back and embedded analytics. Pricing is by quote, with a free trial and demo. It assumes you already have a cloud data warehouse.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if your data lives in a warehouse and business teams are happier in spreadsheets than in dashboard builders.
Belgium · From EUR 1,995 a month billed annually, published; embedded usage charged on top
A Belgian embedded-analytics product: one plan from EUR 1,995 a month on annual billing, with white-label embedding, 500 AI conversations and 100 million rows included. It is for software companies showing dashboards to their own customers, not for internal reporting.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if you need to embed dashboards in your own product for customers.
United States · Credit-based consumption with unlimited users, quoted
A full cloud platform, with consumption-based credit pricing and unlimited users, quoted per organisation (per the category data; its pricing page blocked our fetch, so this was not verified). It spans data integration as well as dashboards, which is far more than a free reporting tool.
Switch from Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) if you want one vendor for data pipelines and dashboards across a large organisation.
When Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) is still the right choice
Data Studio remains the right choice when the data is already in Google products such as Sheets, BigQuery or Google Ads, when the audience is a handful of people reading marketing or operations reports, and when the cost has to be zero. It is free for creators and viewers, quick to build in, and Pro at $9 per user per project per month adds support and team administration if needed. Moving to a heavier platform only pays off once metric consistency or analysis depth becomes a real problem.

What moving off Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) involves
01
Reports do not migrate, they get rebuilt
A Data Studio report is a layout with calculated fields stored inside it. No other BI tool imports it, so each dashboard has to be recreated. List the reports people actually open, drop the rest, and use the move to define shared metrics once in the new tool instead of copying each calculation.
02
Connectors and data freshness
Data Studio reaches Google data through built-in connectors and others through partner connectors. Check that each source has a native connector in the target, or that the data can be loaded into a warehouse first. Several alternatives here, such as Sigma, Lightdash and Superset, expect a SQL database or warehouse behind them.

Questions about replacing Google Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio)
5 answers
Is Looker Studio still free?
Yes. Google states that Data Studio, previously Looker Studio, is available at no charge for creators and report viewers. A paid Pro tier exists at $9 per user per project per month, adding Google Cloud support and team content management.
What is the difference between Looker Studio and Looker?
Looker is Google's enterprise BI platform built around the LookML modelling language, with embedded analytics. The studio product is a free drag-and-drop reporting tool. Looker adds a governed semantic layer that the reporting tool does not have.
Which free alternative to Looker Studio is best?
Metabase and Apache Superset are open source and free to self-host, and Power BI has a free account for building reports (sharing needs Pro). Zoho Analytics also has a free plan, limited to two users and 0.5 million rows.
Which alternative is cheapest for large teams?
Per-user pricing grows with headcount, so flat or capacity pricing helps. Lightdash Cloud Pro is $3,000 a month with unlimited users, Qlik Standard is $825 a month with unlimited users, and Metabase open source has no user limit.
Do I need a data warehouse to leave Looker Studio?
Not for all of them. Power BI, Metabase and Zoho Analytics connect to many sources directly. Lightdash requires dbt, and Sigma is built around cloud warehouses, so those two assume the data is already modelled and stored centrally.
