People looking for a Mural alternative usually hit the editable-mural cap on the Free plan, find that SSO and unlimited guests sit in a $17.99 tier, or want data kept outside the United States. They move to Miro for scope, to European-hosted tools such as Conceptboard and Collaboard, or to cheaper diagramming boards.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to Mural in our online whiteboards ranking are Miro, FigJam and Klaxoon. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Miro if you want the closest like-for-like canvas and a larger template and integration catalogue. All 13 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Online Whiteboards in 2026, and each says where it differs from Mural.

Built for: Facilitators running client workshops where participants join once and leave
Not for: Agencies needing standing client access on the cheapest tier

Why buyers look past Mural
01
Free stops at three editable murals
Mural's Free plan has unlimited murals but only 3 editable at a time, with unlimited visitors who can view only. Team+ lifts that cap at $9.99 per member per month billed annually or $12 billed monthly. A team that runs a workshop every week crosses the line within a month and pays for every member.
02
SSO and unlimited guests need Business
Single sign-on (SAML 2.0), unlimited external guests, invoice payment and priority support are listed from Business at $17.99 per member per month billed annually. Team+ allows credit card payment only, so an organisation that wants SSO or to pay by invoice moves up a tier for that reason alone.
03
Data residency and BYOK are Enterprise only
By default Mural customer data is stored in the United States and hosted on Microsoft Azure. Choosing where murals are stored (data residency) and bring-your-own-key encryption are listed under Enterprise, which is priced by contacting sales. Buyers with a requirement to keep boards in Europe cannot self-serve it.

What each one does differently

Miro
United States · Free plan; per member per month, published; Enterprise quoted
Free is 3 editable boards. Starter is $8 per member per month billed yearly and adds unlimited private boards and timer and voting. Business is $20 and adds unlimited guests. It is the nearest equal in scope, with 250+ integrations and AI credits, so the saving is small and the notes on cost per seat still apply.
Switch from Mural if you want the closest like-for-like canvas and a larger template and integration catalogue.
United States · Free Starter plan; per seat per month, published
Sold inside Figma seats: a Collab seat is listed at $3 per month on Professional and $5 on Organization (billed annually), against $16 and $55 for a Full seat. Cheap for viewers and commenters who already live in Figma, but it is part of a design suite, not a standalone facilitation product.
Switch from Mural if your designers and product people already hold Figma seats and you want the board in the same place.
United States · Free plan; Starter per host per month, published; Enterprise quoted
Starter is $24.90 per host per month billed annually, with 20 contributors per activity, so cost follows hosts and not every attendee. Free allows 5 contributors and one open activity. Klaxoon now says it is evolving into Klaxoon by Wrike, and its help centre documents a Mural import through PDF.
Switch from Mural if a few facilitators run sessions for many participants and you want to pay per host.
Germany · Free plan; per user per month, published; on-premises quoted
From Germany, with Starter at EUR 5, Advanced from EUR 10 and Corporate from EUR 14 per user per month and a 30-day trial. Data centres are in Germany, with optional IONOS or StackIT hosting on Advanced and dedicated on-premises hosting on request. The Free plan caps boards at 3 and objects at 100.
Switch from Mural if German hosting or a dedicated server matters more to you than a large template catalogue.
Switzerland · Free plan; per user per month, published; Enterprise quoted
Developed by IBV, a Swiss software company. Basic is listed from EUR 5 and Advanced from EUR 10 per user per month, with cloud regions in the Netherlands, Switzerland or Germany (Germany costs extra). Self-hosting is Enterprise only. Advanced and Enterprise list an import from Miro, Mural and Conceptboard.
Switch from Mural if you want a European-hosted tool with a documented import path from Mural boards.
United States · Free plan; per editor per month, published
Pro is $10 and Business $20 per editor per month as displayed, and viewers and guests cost nothing. Free is limited to 50 board objects a month. It is strongest on flowcharts, mind maps and wireframes, and it has no equivalent of Mural's facilitation superpowers for workshops.
Switch from Mural if you mostly diagram flows and wireframes and want to pay only for editors.
Finland · Free plan; flat monthly bundles of editor seats, published
Priced in bundles of editor seats: Starter $6 for one editor, Team $20 for five, Business $39 for ten, with unlimited free viewers on the two larger bundles. Free allows 3 boards and 5 users. It targets diagramming for software teams, with AWS and Google Cloud shapes, not workshop facilitation.
Switch from Mural if a software or product team wants flat team bundles instead of paying per member.
France · Free plan; paid plans monthly or yearly, published
Free gives 500 objects across unlimited drafts, and Pro or Team start at EUR 8.33 a month billed yearly. On Business you pay only for core regular users and occasional editors on your team are free of charge. Facilitation tools include timer, voting and polling booth mode. Exports are PNG and CSV.
Switch from Mural if many occasional participants join and you want to pay for only the regular users.
Canada · Quoted per member for Business; Personal plan at zero cost
Built around sticky-note sessions with templates, reports and exports to Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Personal is free for up to 5 members per Storm, and Business carries a 30-day trial with a card required. We could not read its dollar prices in our fetch, and all prices are in US dollars. Hosted on AWS.
Switch from Mural if your sessions end in structured reports or agile planning templates.
United States · Free plan with three boards; Plus per user per month, published
Whiteboard Basic comes with Zoom Workplace Basic and Pro and allows 3 concurrently editable whiteboards. Whiteboard Unlimited is listed from $2.07 per user per month as an add-on and is included in Business plans. It is a feature of a meeting suite, so it suits teams already on Zoom.
Switch from Mural if your teams already pay for Zoom Workplace and mainly whiteboard inside meetings.
Czechia · Free plan; one paid plan per user per month, published
Excalidraw+ is $6 per user per month with a 14-day trial, and a Free version exists. Plus raises AI requests to 100 a day and adds comments, voice hangout and a team workspace. The only supported payment method is credit card, and it is a sketch-style whiteboard, not a facilitation tool.
Switch from Mural if you want hand-drawn style diagrams at a low per-seat price and pay by card.
Not stated by the vendor · Free plan; weekly, monthly and annual Pro plans, published
Pro is $9 a month, $85 a year or $5 for one week, and team pricing falls to $6.5 per user per month for 2 to 5 users on a one-year term. Free allows 3 boards. Payment runs through PayPal. It covers teaching and plain drawing, not structured workshop templates.
Switch from Mural if tutors or small teams need a plain shared canvas for a single flat price.
Australia · Free plan; per-user and flat monthly plans, published; on-premises quoted
A diagram-first workspace. Free allows 40 shapes per diagram, Pro unlocks unlimited shapes and PDF, SVG, PNG and JPEG export, Business adds audit log and admin controls. Our fetch showed no dollar prices for Pro or Business. Real-time whiteboard collaboration is included, but facilitation features like voting are not listed.
Switch from Mural if your boards are mostly formal diagrams such as BPMN, org charts or UML.
Stay on Mural if facilitation is the main job. Every plan includes its Facilitation Superpowers (summon, timer, voting, private mode, laser pointer), and Business adds the LUMA frameworks. It also fits organisations built around Microsoft: the vendor describes a partnership across Microsoft 365 and a Teams app, and the pricing page lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001. The cost is that editing, SSO and data location are all tied to the tier.

What moving off Mural involves
01
Export each mural before you leave
In the app, the Export button offers PNG, PDF, a zip with HTML, embed code or a template, and a download link arrives by email (five to fifteen minutes for larger files). Administrators on the enterprise API can export up to 1,000 murals per job as PDFs with JSON or PDF metadata, available for 60 days. There is no native editable file format to carry over.
02
Plan for PDF import limits at the destination
Klaxoon's help centre says it imports a Mural board as a PDF, up to 50 MB and 10 pages, and complex styling or custom fonts may arrive as static images. Use Mural's presentation outline so each section becomes one page. Collaboard lists a direct import from Mural on Advanced and Enterprise. Expect to rebuild voting and private mode settings by hand.
03
Check seat rules before you count users
Mural's visitors and guests do not take a paid seat, but other tools differ: Whimsical charges editors only, Sketchboard sells bundles of editor seats, Klaxoon charges per host. Count who edits in a typical month before comparing sticker prices, and run the new tool on a real workshop before moving every team.

Business is $17.99 per member per month billed annually. Enterprise is quoted through sales. Prices are as displayed on Mural's pricing page on 23 October 2026.
Is there a free Mural alternative?
Several alternatives publish a Free plan with limits: Miro (3 editable boards), Collaboard (3 whiteboards, 5 participants per board), Conceptboard (3 boards, 100 objects per board), Draft.io (500 objects) and Excalidraw. Check the cap that matters to you, since each limit is different.
Which alternatives host in Europe?
Conceptboard says its data centres are in Germany. Collaboard offers Azure in the Netherlands or Switzerland and T Cloud Public in Germany for an extra charge, with self-hosting on Enterprise. Mural stores data in the United States by default and offers data residency on Enterprise.
Can I import Mural boards into another tool?
Mural exports to PNG and PDF. Klaxoon documents a PDF route with a limit of 50 MB and 10 pages per file. Collaboard lists an import from Mural on Advanced and Enterprise. Imported content may lose custom fonts and complex styling.
Can guests join without paying?
In Mural, visitors can join a mural at no cost on every plan and registered guests with ongoing access come with Business and Enterprise. In Whimsical, Sketchboard Team and Draft.io occasional users also avoid a paid seat, so compare how each vendor defines free participants.
Who owns Mural?
Mural's own pages name Tactivos, Inc. d/b/a Mural and describe LUMA Institute, LLC as a wholly-owned subsidiary. The Microsoft page describes a partnership, not ownership.
