Mixpanel alternatives: 11 web analytics tools compared

People look for a Mixpanel alternative when event volume starts to drive the bill, when the work is really traffic reporting, or when they want the data in their own region or on their own servers. They move to another event-analytics tool, to a privacy-focused web analytics product, or to a self-hosted install.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Mixpanel in our web analytics software ranking are PostHog, Amplitude and Heap. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose PostHog if you want product analytics, replays and flags in one tool, with a free tier of the same size. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Web Analytics Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Mixpanel.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Mixpanel

#8 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking

  • Pricing: Free plan up to 1M events; Growth by event volume; Enterprise by quote
  • Established in: Not stated by the vendor
  • Built for: Product teams measuring funnels and retention across web and mobile apps
  • Not for: Site owners who just want pageviews and referrers on one page
01

Why buyers look past Mixpanel

  1. 01

    Cost rises with event volume

The Free plan covers up to 1M events a month and Growth starts at 0 dollars with the first 1M events free, up to 20M. Beyond that you buy volume, and Group Analytics and Metric Tree are separate add-ons. A site with large traffic but few questions pays for events it never analyses.

  2. 02

Cloud only, US storage by default

Mixpanel stores user data on US servers on Google Cloud by default. EU data residency exists as a project option, chosen when the project is created, and ingestion has to use the EU endpoint. There is no self-hosted version, so a team that must run on its own servers has to leave.

  3. 03

Several features stop at Growth or Enterprise

Free keeps 5 saved reports per seat, limited cohorts and no custom properties, alerts or multi-touch attribution. Anomaly detection and root cause analysis are Enterprise only. Data Pipelines to a warehouse is an add-on for Growth and Enterprise. A team on Free can reach these limits before it reaches 1M events.

What each one does differently

PostHog

United States · Free tier every month; pay as you go per product once a card is added

Closest in scope: product analytics, session replay, feature flags and experiments on one platform. The free tier covers 1M analytics events a month with no card, and pay-as-you-go lifts it to 7-year retention. The MIT-licensed Docker Compose build is self-hostable, but the vendor calls self-hosted deployments officially unsupported.

Switch from Mixpanel if you want product analytics, replays and flags in one tool, with a free tier of the same size.

PostHog, #7 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Amplitude

United States · Free plan up to 2M events a month; Plus needs a card; Growth by quote

Most direct like-for-like on event analytics. Free gives 2M events a month and 10K monthly session replays; Plus scales to 70M events but needs a card, and Growth and Enterprise are quoted by event volume. Behavioural cohorts and custom events and formulas start at Plus, not Free.

Switch from Mixpanel if you want a free tier with twice Mixpanel's event allowance and the same funnel and retention style of analysis.

Amplitude, #9 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Heap

United States · Free plan up to 10k sessions; Growth estimated after install; higher tiers by quote

Priced by sessions, not events: Free covers up to 10k monthly sessions with 6 months of history, and Growth adds CSV exports and 12 months. Higher tiers are quoted, and data warehouse integration is listed only on Premier. Heap now belongs to Contentsquare, so check roadmap and contract terms.

Switch from Mixpanel if you prefer session-based volume and charts that need less up-front event design.

Heap, #10 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Matomo

New Zealand · Cloud tiers by monthly hits, published; On-Premise core is free, bundles paid

Web analytics first, not product analytics. Cloud starts at 29 a month excluding tax for 50,000 hits, hosted in Frankfurt, with no data sampling and a Google Analytics importer. The core is GPL-3.0 and free to self-host, but you then run servers, updates and storage yourself.

Switch from Mixpanel if your questions are about traffic and campaigns, and you want the option to self-host under a free licence.

Matomo, #2 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Plausible

Estonia · Published tiers by monthly pageviews; 30-day trial; cloud or community edition

A one-page traffic dashboard, not an event-funnel tool. Starter shows from $9 a month for 10k monthly pageviews on one site, with a 30-day trial and no card. Funnels, user journeys and custom properties sit on Business, and the self-hosted Community Edition (AGPL) omits funnels.

Switch from Mixpanel if you track a marketing site and want a simple dashboard instead of a query builder.

Plausible, #1 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Umami

United States · Free hobby plan; Pro and Business billed monthly by events, published

Usage-based cloud with a free Hobby plan (100K events, 1 website, 6 months of history), Pro at $20 a month (1 million events, 20 websites, 2 years) and Business at $200 a month. Session replays and heatmaps are Business only. The code is MIT-licensed and can be self-hosted.

Switch from Mixpanel if you want a cheap, open-source tool with event tracking and a clear per-event overage rate.

Umami, #5 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Piwik PRO

Poland · Published Business and Enterprise tiers; 30-day trial without a card

Aimed at regulated organisations. Business starts at 36 euros a month with a 30-day trial and no card, up to 2M monthly actions, with raw data by API only. Enterprise starts at 366 euros a month billed annually and offers private cloud, a BAA and extra modules. Headquarters in Wrocław, Poland.

Switch from Mixpanel if you must run analytics, tag management and consent in one regulated stack.

Piwik PRO, #6 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Fathom Analytics

Canada · Published tiers by monthly pageviews; 7-day trial with a card

Pageview-priced and deliberately narrow: 15 dollars a month covers 100,000 pageviews across 50 sites, with event and revenue tracking and unlimited email reports. The trial lasts 7 days and takes a card. Funnels, cohorts or session replay are not listed on its pricing page.

Switch from Mixpanel if you run several websites and need traffic and conversion numbers, not product funnels.

Fathom Analytics, #3 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Simple Analytics

Netherlands · Free plan for hobby sites; paid by pageviews, published; 14-day trial

A Dutch B.V. in Amsterdam with data stored in the EU. Free for hobby sites (1 user, 5 websites, 1 month of history, badge required); paid starts at 20 euros a month for 100k pageviews, plus 20 euros per extra user. It measures traffic, not individual user behaviour.

Switch from Mixpanel if you want a free plan for a hobby site and EU-stored traffic numbers for a paid one.

Simple Analytics, #4 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Google Analytics

United States · Free standard version; 360 is a paid tier with no price on vendor pages

Free of charge for the standard version, so cost is no reason to leave it. Daily BigQuery export is available but standard properties are limited to 1 million events a day. It is a web and app analytics tool tied to Google's advertising products, with data held under Google's terms.

Switch from Mixpanel if your main need is ad-platform integration and you accept Google as processor.

Google Analytics, #11 of 12 in our web analytics software ranking →

Adobe Analytics

Not stated by the vendor · Not stated in the vendor documentation

Enterprise web analytics sold through Adobe, with no price on its documentation. It offers Analysis Workspace, data feeds and Data Warehouse exports, and sits alongside Customer Journey Analytics. Expect an implementation project and a contract, so it is a step up in effort and cost from Mixpanel.

Switch from Mixpanel if you are a large organisation already running Adobe Experience Cloud products.

When Mixpanel is still the right choice

Stay with Mixpanel if you analyse user behaviour inside a product, stay under the Free plan's 1M events a month, and want unlimited seats with funnels and retention analysis without running anything yourself. Moving costs you saved reports and tracking code, and a web analytics tool will not replace funnel and retention analysis on event data.

05

What moving off Mixpanel involves

  1. 01

    Export what you need first

Mixpanel documents event export through an API, CSV exports from the UI, profile export and report downloads. Cohort Syncs and Data Pipelines send data on to other destinations, with Data Pipelines an add-on on Growth and Enterprise. Take the raw events before you cancel, because a new tool will not replay them.

  2. 02

    Expect to re-instrument

Event names and properties live in your tracking code, so changing tools means changing SDK calls and rebuilding every saved report. Run the new tool beside Mixpanel for a few weeks and compare counts. Plausible and Matomo import Google Analytics data, not Mixpanel data, so history from Mixpanel stays in an export.

Questions about replacing Mixpanel

5 answers
Is there a free Mixpanel alternative?

Yes, several. PostHog has a free tier of 1M analytics events a month, Amplitude 2M events, Heap up to 10k sessions and Umami a Hobby plan with 100K events. Matomo and Umami are free to self-host. Each limits something, such as history, sites or features.

Can I self-host a Mixpanel alternative?

Yes. Matomo core (GPL-3.0), Plausible Community Edition (AGPL), Umami (MIT) and PostHog (MIT, Docker Compose) can be self-hosted. PostHog says self-hosted deployments are officially unsupported, and Plausible's edition omits funnels.

Which alternative keeps data in the EU?

Mixpanel offers EU residency per project. Among alternatives, Plausible says it is hosted in the EU, Matomo Cloud stores data in Frankfurt, Simple Analytics stores in the EU with primary infrastructure in the Netherlands and Piwik PRO Business uses hosting in Sweden.

Do web analytics tools replace Mixpanel funnels?

Only partly. Fathom and Simple Analytics list traffic metrics and goals, not product funnels. Plausible has funnels on Business, and PostHog, Amplitude and Heap are built for product funnels. Check the feature list for the plan you buy.

What did the vendors say about migration?

Mixpanel's documentation covers export, and Plausible documents importing Google Analytics 4 data. We found no vendor page on importing Mixpanel history into an alternative, so plan to export your raw data and keep it.
