Grammarly alternatives: 12 AI writing tools compared

People look for a Grammarly alternative when they only wanted proofreading and now pay for an AI platform, when they write in languages other than English, or when a team needs a different licence model. They move to a dedicated grammar checker, a rewriter, or a specialist tool for fiction, marketing copy or academic writing.

Short answer: Looking for a replacement for Grammarly? LanguageTool, ProWritingAid and Wordtune come first in our AI writing tool ranking. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Start with LanguageTool if you write in several languages or want a self-hostable engine. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Writing Tools in 2026, and each says where it differs from Grammarly.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Grammarly

Why buyers look past Grammarly

  1. 01

A proofreader that became a platform

Grammarly's own about page describes it as an AI communication platform that works across more than 1 million apps and websites, and the company renamed itself Superhuman in October after buying Coda and Superhuman Mail. If you installed it to catch typos, you are now buying into a wider product line.

  2. 02

The paid features sit behind one tier

The plans page shows Free at EUR 0 and Pro at EUR 12, with full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, plagiarism and AI-text detection all marked as Pro only. Free includes 100 AI prompts a month, Pro 2,000. Anyone who needs just one of those features pays for the whole bundle.

  3. 03

Control and language options narrow at the edges

SAML single sign-on, SCIM, audit logs and custom roles appear only in the Enterprise column, which is sold through Contact Sales with no listed price. The Pro column also lists 'write fluently in English' as a feature, so a team that mostly writes in German or Dutch should test coverage before committing.

What each one does differently

LanguageTool

Germany · Published

A grammar and style checker that supports 30+ languages and whose core is open source under the LGPL 2.1 licence, so you can run your own server. The vendor says it is made in Europe and the US. Premium adds paraphrasing and a style guide; we could not read its prices, which load client-side.

Switch from Grammarly if you write in several languages or want a self-hostable engine.

Switch from Grammarly if you want deep style reports and a one-off lifetime licence.

Wordtune

Israel · Published

A sentence rewriter from AI21 Labs. Basic is free with 10 rewrites a day, and paid plans list a 3-day trial. It writes in English only, though it translates ten languages into English. It has no plagiarism checker on the plans page and is sold to individuals first.

Switch from Grammarly if rewording sentences matters more to you than catching every grammar slip.

Wordtune comes 9 of 14 when AI writing tool products are ranked here →

Jasper

United States · Published

A marketing content platform priced per seat: Pro lists USD 69 a month per seat with a 7-day trial, with brand voice and agents on top. It generates campaign copy rather than correcting your own drafts. Heavier on cost than a checker for a team of ten.

Switch from Grammarly if your team produces marketing content and needs shared brand voice, not proofreading.

Writer

United States · On request

An enterprise agent platform. The Starter plan covers up to 5 users with a 14-day trial and 5 playbooks, while Enterprise is quoted through sales and adds governance, observability and unlimited users. It replaces Grammarly's team controls with workflow automation, which is a different job.

Switch from Grammarly if your organisation wants governed AI workflows and will go through a sales process.

Copy.ai

United States · Published

Now sold as a go-to-market workflow platform. The Chat plan lists USD 29 a month for 5 seats, while the Growth plan lists USD 1,000 a month billed annually for 75 seats and workflow credits. It automates sales and marketing processes and is not a checker for your own text.

Marketing copy tied to performance predictions. Starter lists USD 49 a month with 50 predictions and 1 seat, Data-Driven USD 99 with 3 seats, and a 7-day trial. Business and Enterprise are quoted. It scores copy before you publish and does not proofread general documents.

When Grammarly is still the right choice

Grammarly remains a reasonable choice when you write mostly in English across many apps. The plans page lists a free tier, 100 AI prompts a month on it, and a SOC 2 (Type 2) report, and the Pro plan adds rewrites, tone control and plagiarism detection in one subscription. A team that already uses its Enterprise controls (SAML, audit logs, data loss prevention) would also have to replace those, not only the grammar engine.

05

What moving off Grammarly involves

  1. 01

Rebuild your style rules before you switch

Grammarly's Pro plan includes one style guide, one brand tone and snippets, and Enterprise allows unlimited guides. Export your preferred terms, spellings and snippet text into a plain document first, then enter them in the new tool's dictionary or style guide so your house wording survives the move.

  2. 02

Run both tools on the same ten documents

Suggestions differ between engines, and a tool that misses less on your usual documents is more useful than one that flags more. Take ten real emails and reports, check them in each candidate during its trial, and count the corrections you would actually accept. Free tiers and trials are listed above.

Questions about replacing Grammarly

6 answers
Is there a free alternative to Grammarly?

LanguageTool has a free grammar checker in its editor and its core is open source, ProWritingAid has a free plan with two runs per report per day, and Wordtune Basic is free with 10 rewrites a day.

Limits are lower than the paid plans, so test with your usual document length.

Which alternative works in languages other than English?

LanguageTool lists 30+ languages and Rytr lists 30+ languages for writing. ProWritingAid says it is currently English only and Wordtune writes in English only, though it translates other languages into English. Check your own language on a trial before paying.

Can I run an alternative on my own server?

LanguageTool's core is published under the LGPL 2.1 licence, and its about page says users can set up their own LanguageTool server. The hosted Premium features, such as the style guide and paraphrasing, are part of its subscription.

Is there a one-off payment instead of a subscription?

ProWritingAid lists a lifetime option next to monthly and yearly billing, and its refund page gives three days to ask for money back on yearly or lifetime plans. Grammarly's plans page shows only Free, Pro and Enterprise.

What changed at Grammarly recently?

Its about page says it acquired Coda and Superhuman Mail in 2025 and that the company became Superhuman in October, with Grammarly remaining one of three products. Plan names on the plans page are Free, Pro and Enterprise.

Which alternative is best for fiction writers?

Sudowrite, Novelcrafter and Squibler target fiction, and ProWritingAid offers story reports. They differ in model: Sudowrite meters credits, Novelcrafter needs your own AI key from the Hobbyist plan, Squibler generates whole manuscripts. None is a general browser checker.
