Cloudinary alternatives: 11 digital asset management tools compared
Cloudinary alternatives are sought by marketing and brand teams that arrived through the developer door. The image and video API was adopted for delivery, then the library interface was asked to serve people who never write code. They tend to move to a dedicated DAM with portals, approvals and flat, quoted pricing, or to a self-hosted library when the data has to stay on their own servers.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to Cloudinary in our digital asset management ranking are ResourceSpace, Filecamp and Fotoware. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose ResourceSpace if you want a library you can host yourself and leave without asking permission. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Digital Asset Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Cloudinary.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say
about a product. How that works.
Pricing: Free tier for the media API; credit-based plans published; the Assets DAM is quoted after a 30-day trial
Established in: United States
Built for: Product and engineering teams delivering transformed images at scale
Not for: Marketing teams looking for a searchable brand library
01
Why buyers look past Cloudinary
01
A delivery platform wearing a library
Cloudinary describes itself as an image and video platform with AI-powered APIs for management, transformation and optimised delivery through a CDN, with the Assets DAM as a separate product line. For a team that only wants to store, find and share brand files, most of that machinery (transformations, adaptive streaming, remote fetch) is capability it never touches. The free and Plus plans are built around the API, upload widget and delivery, not around a marketing team's day.
02
One credit pool for storage, processing and traffic
Cloudinary's plans are measured in credits. One credit equals 1,000 transformations, or 1GB of managed storage, or 1GB of image bandwidth (paid plans: or 2GB of video bandwidth). The free plan gives 25 monthly credits, Plus (listed at $99 monthly or $89 on yearly billing) gives 225, and Advanced ($249 monthly, $224 yearly) gives 600. The system calculates the usage and the dashboard shows the breakdown, but a team has to estimate transformations, storage and visitor traffic together, which the pricing page itself offers a calculator for. Teams that want one known annual figure often prefer a different model.
03
The DAM is a quote, the plan ladder is not
The self-serve ladder covers the API product: Free, Plus, Advanced, then Enterprise on request. The Assets DAM sits on its own tab with a 30-day trial (3 users, 25GB of storage) and then a custom price. Organisations that expected the published Plus or Advanced price to include a full brand-portal DAM find that the library they need is a separate negotiation, and compare it with vendors that publish a price or a licence model.
Base package price published, billed annually; larger packages quoted
Digital asset management combined with marketing approvals and compliance review
compliance sign-off on marketing content matters more than image optimisation

What each one does differently

ResourceSpace
United Kingdom · Free self-hosted; hosted plans published
ResourceSpace is open source software, so there is no annual licence fee and the vendor charges for support and hosting. Cloud plans are tiered by user count (Team 25 users, Business 100, Enterprise 500), and the full system can be exported to your own servers. Cloudinary's on-the-fly image transformation and CDN are not what it is built for.
Switch from Cloudinary if you want a library you can host yourself and leave without asking permission.
Switzerland · Per plan per month by storage, unlimited users, published; 30-day trial
Filecamp publishes three plans at $29, $59 and $89 per month (annual billing is also listed) with unlimited users and free bandwidth, against Cloudinary's credits. Storage is capped per plan at 20, 50 and 100GB. It adds proofing, custom branding and portals, and has no developer-facing transformation API of Cloudinary's kind.
Switch from Cloudinary if a small marketing team wants a fixed monthly price with every colleague and partner invited.
Fotoware is headquartered in Oslo, with an office in Switzerland, and sells a modular package by quote. It offers two platforms: Veloz, a classic DAM, and Alto, an API-first one, plus the FotoStation desktop client. Pricing is not on the site, and it has no credit meter or delivery CDN tied to the licence.
Switch from Cloudinary if you want a classic DAM from a European vendor and an API-first option inside one supplier.
Bynder is an enterprise DAM with its headquarters in Amsterdam and offices on several continents. Plans are quoted and depend on users, storage, MarTech usage, the products included and support level. It lists 160+ integrations and workflow modules for briefing and proofing, and image transformation is not its main business.
Switch from Cloudinary if marketing and brand teams, not developers, own the library and approvals are central.
Switzerland · Quoted, billed on monthly active users
Frontify starts from brand guidelines, templates and a brand assistant, with the asset library as one part. It bills by monthly active users rather than credits, so dormant accounts add no cost. It offers an MCP and API connection, but no image-processing pipeline like Cloudinary's.
Switch from Cloudinary if the real problem is brand consistency across many contributors, not media delivery.
Canto prices by team size and storage needs, quoted, with capabilities from core DAM up to advanced AI chosen as modules. It positions itself on being administered by marketing staff directly. It does not provide Cloudinary's developer-focused delivery and transformation URLs.
Switch from Cloudinary if a mid-sized marketing team wants to run the library itself, with no developer in the loop.
Brandfolder is a marketing DAM with portals, brand guidelines (Brandguide), an API and a Smart CDN that embeds assets on the web, sold by quote on a get-a-quote page. It is listed alongside a combined Smartsheet product. Its CDN serves published assets and does not replace Cloudinary's on-the-fly transformation of images.
Switch from Cloudinary if you want a search-first marketing library that still serves assets to your web pages.
Acquia DAM is built on Widen technology and sold by Acquia, which also sells managed Drupal hosting. Pricing is customised by organisation size, users, storage and feature needs. It fits a team already on the Acquia stack, and it is not a developer-first delivery API.
Switch from Cloudinary if your website already runs on Drupal or other Acquia products and you want one supplier.
United Kingdom · Per year by plan, published, plus set-up fees
Asset Bank lists annual prices in several currencies on its site: Essential from £5,949, Professional from £9,849 and Enterprise from £19,499 per year, each plus set-up fees. That is a known yearly figure where Cloudinary meters credits. It markets a compliance-first DAM, and it is not an image-transformation service.
Switch from Cloudinary if procurement wants a published annual price and a set-up fee they can budget.
Canada · Quoted per organisation; users not metered
MediaValet gives an unlimited user count within the licence instead of metering usage, with a quoted price and unlimited training and support. It lists Vancouver as its Canadian headquarters and Menlo Park as its US one. Video-heavy libraries are a focus, but it has no image-transformation URLs of Cloudinary's kind.
Switch from Cloudinary if many staff and agencies need access and a per-seat or per-credit meter would punish adoption.
Australia · Base package price published, billed annually; larger packages quoted
IntelligenceBank combines asset management with briefs, proofing, approvals and marketing compliance review in one platform. Its base DAM package starts at $567 per month billed annually, while other packages are shaped by user types, storage and add-ons. It is built for regulated marketing teams rather than media delivery.
Switch from Cloudinary if compliance sign-off on marketing content matters more than image optimisation.
Cloudinary remains the right choice when the images and video are served to a website or app and developers already build against its API. Transformations at request time, a CDN, adaptive streaming and a single credit pool for storage and bandwidth are the product, and the free plan (25 credits, 3 users) is a real way to start. A marketing library bolted onto that pipeline is easier than running a second system. If the main buyers are developers and e-commerce teams, a dedicated DAM would add cost without removing the need for a delivery layer.

What moving off Cloudinary involves
01
The delivery URLs are part of your site
If your pages request images from Cloudinary with transformation parameters in the URL, those links are code, not content. A DAM that only stores and shares files will not resize or reformat on request, so decide first whether you keep Cloudinary for delivery and move only the library, or replace the transformations with a CDN service or build-time image processing.
02
Export assets with their metadata
A library is only as good as its tags and fields. Export the assets together with the tags, structured metadata and folder paths through the API or the admin tools, and map them to the new system's fields before importing. Auto-generated tags were produced by Cloudinary's own tagging, so decide whether to keep them or have the new tool generate its own.
03
Run both while links resolve
Keep the Cloudinary account on the free plan or a low tier until you have checked every place the old URLs appear, including email templates, product feeds and third-party platforms. Moving the library does not by itself redirect those references.

Questions about replacing Cloudinary
6 answers
Is Cloudinary a DAM?
It has a DAM product, Cloudinary Assets, with a 30-day trial for 3 users and 25GB and a custom price afterwards. The company's core offer is the image and video API with a CDN.
Teams that want mostly a marketing library often compare it with dedicated DAMs such as Bynder, Canto and Brandfolder.
What is a cheaper alternative to Cloudinary?
Filecamp publishes $29, $59 and $89 monthly plans with unlimited users, and ResourceSpace has no software licence fee, with paid support and hosting. Both are libraries rather than delivery platforms, so they replace the DAM use and not the image transformation use.
Is there a self-hosted alternative to Cloudinary?
ResourceSpace is free software that can be installed on your own servers, and the vendor states you can export your full system and keep running it unsupported. Its cloud plans are the hosted route.
Which alternatives publish their price?
Filecamp, Asset Bank and ResourceSpace (for support packages) publish figures, and IntelligenceBank publishes a starting price for its base package. Bynder, Fotoware, Frontify, Canto, Brandfolder, Acquia DAM and MediaValet work by quote.
How are Cloudinary credits calculated?
One credit covers 1,000 transformations, 1GB of managed storage or 1GB of image bandwidth, and on paid plans 2GB of video bandwidth. The system calculates the credits used and the breakdown is visible in the dashboard. The free plan includes 25 monthly credits.
Can I keep Cloudinary for delivery and use another tool as the library?
Yes, and it is a common split. The library tool holds the approved masters, portals and rights, while Cloudinary serves optimised versions to the website. Cloudinary lists integrations with platforms such as Shopify, WordPress and Contentful, so check that your stack is covered.
