Canto alternatives: 12 digital asset management tools compared

Teams look for a Canto alternative when they want to see a price before a sales call, when they need a different hosting or ownership arrangement, or when the brand and workflow side matters more to them than the library itself. Most go to another quoted mid-market DAM, to a vendor with published prices, or to open source software they can run themselves.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Canto in our digital asset management ranking are Bynder, Brandfolder and MediaValet. Choose Bynder if you want the closest quoted competitor and need workflow modules sold separately from the library. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Digital Asset Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Canto.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Canto

Why buyers look past Canto

  1. 01

There is no price to read before you talk to sales

Canto's pricing page is a contact form. It says pricing scales with team size and storage needs, and that the packages shown are illustrative. That is normal for the category, but a team with a fixed budget and a small library cannot tell from the page whether Canto is in range. Filecamp, Asset Bank and ResourceSpace publish figures, and MediaValet states that its licence does not meter users.

  2. 02

The product is widening beyond the library

Canto now sells a DAM for Products with product data and retailer catalogues, a Brand Studio, an Approval Hub, Media Publisher and a set of AI features, and its home page describes an AI layer that acts on assets automatically. A team that wants a plain, searchable library with sharing links may find that it is evaluating a platform roadmap rather than a tool, and may prefer a vendor whose scope is narrower or whose brand guidelines come first.

  3. 03

Hosting is the vendor's choice of cloud, not yours

Canto states that customer data is hosted on AWS in the region you require, and the privacy policy names Canto GmbH in Berlin and Canto, Inc. in the USA as controllers. We found no self-hosted edition on the site. Organisations that must run the software on their own servers, or that want the code to be open, have to look at ResourceSpace, which is free software, or at a vendor whose contract names a European company.

What each one does differently

Bynder

Netherlands · Quoted per organisation, annual

Bynder is a Dutch company headquartered in Amsterdam, and like Canto it quotes a price per organisation rather than publishing one. Its pitch is a core DAM plus modules for asset workflow, content workflow, analytics and a design studio. That suits larger brand teams, and it makes the quote less predictable.

Switch from Canto if you want the closest quoted competitor and need workflow modules sold separately from the library.

Bynder, #2 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Brandfolder

United States · Quoted per organisation, annual

Brandfolder sells two tiers, Premium and Enterprise, and its site markets the product together with Smartsheet. Premium adds asset analytics, document search and video AI tagging, while Enterprise adds custom automation and finer permissions. Neither tier shows a price, and the Smartsheet pairing is aimed at teams already working in that tool.

Switch from Canto if your teams already work in Smartsheet and you want asset analytics in the lower tier.

Brandfolder, #10 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

MediaValet

Canada · Quoted per organisation; users not metered

MediaValet says its pricing has unlimited users and permission groups, with no forced tiers, and that it gives pricing direction on the first call. Its headquarters are in Vancouver, with a US office in Menlo Park. Canto's page speaks of pricing that scales with team size, so user count is the thing that differs.

Switch from Canto if many occasional users make a per-user or team-size price awkward.

MediaValet, #11 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Acquia DAM

United States · Quoted per organisation, annual

Acquia DAM is the former Widen platform, now sold by Acquia of Boston inside its digital experience portfolio, and its page says it is built on Widen technology. It is aimed at organisations that already run Drupal or other Acquia products. We found no published prices, and it is a heavier purchase than Canto.

Switch from Canto if you run Acquia or Drupal for your website and want the library from the same vendor.

Acquia DAM, #15 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Frontify

Switzerland · Quoted, billed on monthly active users

Frontify, founded in Switzerland and based in St. Gallen, puts brand guidelines and templates beside the asset library, and charges by monthly active users instead of seats or storage. Canto leads with the library and the workflow around it. Frontify suits teams whose main problem is brand consistency.

Switch from Canto if your guidelines matter as much as your files and you want to pay only for users who log in.

Frontify, #9 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Filecamp

Switzerland · Per plan per month by storage, unlimited users, published; 30-day trial

Filecamp is run by Filecamp AG, which refers to Swiss law in its terms, and publishes its prices: Basic is $29 a month for 20 GB, up to Professional at $89 for 100 GB, all with unlimited users. Proofing and white-label domains arrive on higher plans. It is a small-team tool, not a replacement for Canto's AI and product features.

Switch from Canto if you are a small team that wants a price on the page and a library of modest size.

Filecamp, #1 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Asset Bank

United Kingdom · Per year by plan, published, plus set-up fees

Asset Bank is made by Bright Interactive in Brighton, England, and lists annual prices in several currencies: Essential from £5,949 for 500 GB and 50 users, Professional from £9,849, Enterprise from £19,499, each plus set-up fees. It runs on AWS with a choice of regions on the top tier.

Switch from Canto if you want annual prices in writing and a UK supplier with compliance as its selling point.

Asset Bank, #6 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

ResourceSpace

United Kingdom · Free self-hosted; hosted plans published

ResourceSpace is free software from Montala Limited in Oxfordshire. Its pricing page says there is no annual software licence fee and that the support fee is all you pay, with hosted plans from that company. Canto offers no self-hosted edition we could find. The trade-off is a plainer interface and, if you host it yourself, your own server work.

Switch from Canto if you want open source you can host, audit or leave without asking the vendor.

ResourceSpace, #3 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Fotoware

Norway · Quoted per organisation, modular

Fotoware is headquartered in Oslo and also lists a Swiss company in Baden. It sells two platforms, Veloz as the classic DAM and Alto as the API-first one, plus Fotostation for desktop image management and Flow for workflow automation. Pricing is a tailored quote. Where Canto packages tiers, Fotoware sells modules.

Switch from Canto if you manage large photo or archive collections and want to choose modules separately.

Fotoware, #5 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Keepeek

France · Quoted per organisation, annual

Keepeek is a French company, Keepeek SAS in Paris, and describes itself as a brand of the Papirfly group. Its site offers a DAM, a brand portal and pre-designed templates for non-designers, with hosting in Europe. Pricing is built from a DAM package plus options. It is a narrower product than Canto's AI and product-data range.

Switch from Canto if you want a French supplier with a brand portal and templates in the same contract.

Keepeek, #12 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

IntelligenceBank

Australia · Base package price published, billed annually; larger packages quoted

IntelligenceBank is headquartered in Melbourne and states a base DAM package from $567 a month billed annually, with other packages quoted. Every package includes the DAM, and the higher ones add marketing operations and a compliance review module. Canto's approvals are about content readiness, not regulated sign-off.

Switch from Canto if marketing content needs compliance review before release and you want a stated entry price.

IntelligenceBank, #7 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

Cloudinary

United States · Free tier for the media API; credit-based plans published; the Assets DAM is quoted after a 30-day trial

Cloudinary began as a media API and delivery network. Its pricing page shows a free plan with 3 users and 25 monthly credits, and credit-based paid plans from $99 a month. Its Assets DAM is a separate product offered on a trial. It suits developers who transform and serve media in code, not marketers.

Switch from Canto if developers need to transform and deliver images and video by API and want a free tier to start.

Cloudinary, #8 of 16 in our digital asset management ranking →

04

When Canto is still the right choice

Canto remains the right choice when a marketing team wants to run the library without help from IT, and the security paperwork matters. Its security page lists ISO 27001:2022 certification, annual SOC 2 testing, HIPAA compliance and AWS hosting in the region you choose, and its integration list covers Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Figma, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, Shopify and WordPress. It also has a documented REST API. If you have already priced it, the integrations you use are on the list, and you are not asking for self-hosting, the alternatives mostly trade one quote for another.

05

What moving off Canto involves

  1. 01

Check what you can export before you sign anything new

Canto publishes a REST API with documentation, which is the route most migration tools take. Ask the new vendor to run a trial import of a few hundred assets, and compare which metadata, albums and version history survive. Do this before cancelling, because the arrival of tags and rights data is the part most likely to be incomplete.

  2. 02

    Rebuild integrations and sharing links

Connectors for Adobe, Canva, Office and your website sit in Canto's own integration layer, and links shared externally point to Canto. Make a list of the integrations in daily use and of the portals and permanent links that partners rely on. The new vendor will need equivalents, and external recipients will need new links on a stated date.

  3. 03

Decide what to do with AI tags and facial recognition data

Canto uses AI visual search, auto-tagging and facial recognition inside the library. Tags generated by one vendor's model will not match another's vocabulary. Decide whether to carry the old tags across, regenerate them in the new system, or keep only the human-entered metadata.

Questions about replacing Canto

6 answers
How much does Canto cost?

Canto does not publish a price. Its pricing page says pricing scales with team size and storage needs, and that the packages shown are illustrative, so you receive a quote after a sales conversation.

Filecamp, Asset Bank and IntelligenceBank publish at least an entry price if you need a number before talking to anyone.

Is Canto the same product as Cumulus?

Canto's own site says Cumulus is now Canto, and describes Canto as the cloud-based successor built for the modern era. If you hear the Cumulus name from a colleague or an older contract, the vendor treats the two as one product line.

Where does Canto host my data?

Canto's security page says all customer data is hosted on AWS in the region you require. Its privacy policy names Canto GmbH in Berlin and Canto, Inc.

in the USA as the responsible parties. Ask for the contract wording on region and sub-processors if you have data residency obligations.

Is there an open source alternative to Canto?

ResourceSpace is the one in our category. Its pricing page calls it free software with no annual software licence fee, and the company charges for support and hosting.

You can also host it on your own server, which Canto does not offer as far as we found.

Which Canto alternative has the most predictable user pricing?

MediaValet states that users and permission groups are unlimited and that it does not force tiers. Filecamp includes unlimited users in every plan, and Frontify charges only for monthly active users.

Check each contract for storage and feature limits, because user count is only one part of the bill.

Which alternative suits a developer team?

Cloudinary, which began as a media API with a free plan of 3 users and 25 monthly credits. Fotoware's Alto is also described as API-first. Canto has a REST API too, but its main interface is aimed at marketing teams.
