Bottomline alternatives: 12 accounts payable automation tools compared

Bottomline sells business payments, Paymode supplier payments, a payments hub and cash management, and most buyers who go looking for a replacement want only one of those layers: invoice-to-pay software without a bank-payments stack, a treasury system without the payables, or a vendor with its legal home in Europe. Bottomline publishes no price and splits its product pages between North America and UK/EMEA/APAC. The alternatives below are ordered from the closest payments and cash tools to the invoice-first ones.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Bottomline in our accounts payable automation ranking are Nomentia, Serrala and Medius. Smaller vendors fill the top three places where the category offers them, and the household names start at place 4. Choose Nomentia if the payments hub and cash forecast matter more than invoice handling, and you want a European treasury vendor. Below are 12 alternatives, each taken from the Best Accounts Payable Automation Software in 2026 ranking, with its main difference from Bottomline.

Visibility on this site can be bought by vendors; what we say about the product cannot. The disclosure page explains.

Why buyers look past Bottomline

  1. 01

It is a payments company with an AP product attached

Bottomline's own About page describes its work as modernising business payments for banks and businesses in 92 countries, and its product menu is grouped as Payments Automation, Payments Connectivity, Fraud & Compliance and Cash Management. Several lines on that menu are marked for banks and financial institutions only, such as Message Vault and Digital Banking. A finance team shopping for invoice processing is buying from a portfolio built mainly around moving money.

  2. 02

Payables run through the Paymode network and no price is shown

The AP Automation page leans on Premium ACH and virtual card payments to suppliers, with supplier enrolment handled by Bottomline, and the Paymode page claims more than 635,000 payers and vendors. None of the Bottomline pages we fetched showed a price, a plan grid or a payment fee table. A buyer who wants to compare per-invoice or per-payment cost before a sales call has nothing to put next to a competitor's numbers.

  3. 03

Ownership and regional split affect what you can buy

The About page states Bottomline is a portfolio company of Thoma Bravo, and the footer names Bottomline Technologies, Inc., with its corporate headquarters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and its EMEA headquarters in Theale, Reading. Product pages exist in separate North America and UK/EMEA/APAC versions, and the cash management page is titled differently in each. Confirm which modules your region is sold before comparing feature lists.

When Bottomline is still the right choice

Bottomline stays the sensible choice when payment execution is the purchase. If your bank connectivity, UK Bacs and Faster Payments submission, Swift messaging or Paymode supplier payments already run on its platform, replacing it means rebuilding bank connections and re-enrolling suppliers, and none of the invoice-first tools here carries that infrastructure. The Payments Hub, which claims four Swift-certified service bureaus, and the Global Cash Management Hub, which states a start in as few as 12 weeks, suit a team that wants one vendor for payments and cash.

05

What moving off Bottomline involves

  1. 01

Inventory the bank connections before comparing features

List each bank, format and payment type that Bottomline sends today, including Bacs, Faster Payments, NACHA, Fedwire and Swift. A treasury or payments vendor such as Nomentia or Kyriba will be judged on that list, and any bank missing from it becomes a project. Ask each candidate for its connectivity method per bank, whether API, SFTP or Swift.

  2. 02

Plan supplier re-enrolment if you pay through Paymode

Suppliers who receive Premium ACH or virtual card payments through Paymode have been enrolled by Bottomline. A new tool such as Tipalti or AvidXchange uses its own portal and onboarding, and card rebates earned today will change. Run the first cycle on a small supplier group and keep Paymode live until each supplier has confirmed the new bank details.

  3. 03

Separate the three layers before you sign

Bottomline bundles invoice automation, payments and cash visibility, and an alternative usually replaces one of them. Decide whether you buy capture and approval (Esker, Basware, Medius, Yooz), payments (Tipalti, Nomentia, Kyriba) or cash (Nomentia, Kyriba), then check that the pieces you keep connect to each other.

Questions about replacing Bottomline

6 answers
Does Bottomline publish its prices?

No. None of the Bottomline product and payments pages we fetched on 31 October 2026 showed a price, plan grid or fee table.

Among the alternatives, Tipalti (from $99 a month), BILL ($49 to $89 per user per month) and Medius packages by entity count publish some structure, while Kyriba, Nomentia and Serrala quote.

Who owns Bottomline?

The Bottomline About page says it is a portfolio company of Thoma Bravo. The footer names Bottomline Technologies, Inc. Its corporate headquarters is in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with EMEA headquarters in Theale, Reading, and APAC headquarters in Singapore.

Which alternative suits a European treasury team?

Nomentia Oy (Espoo, Finland) and Serrala Group GmbH (Germany) are the two European treasury and payments vendors on the list. Kyriba was founded in Paris but states San Diego as its headquarters. Check each vendor's bank list for your own banks before shortlisting.

Is there a Bottomline alternative for supplier payments only?

Tipalti and AvidXchange both execute supplier payments through their own onboarding.

Tipalti states 200+ countries and licences in the US, Canada, UK and EU, while AvidXchange pays by virtual card, AvidPay Direct or mailed cheque and is a licensed US money transmitter. Neither replaces Bottomline's bank messaging.

Which tools do not make payments at all?

Esker's AP page covers capture, matching, approval and a supplier portal but does not describe payment execution, and Basware's homepage shows no payments product. Pair either with a bank portal, ERP payment run or a payments hub from Nomentia.

Can a small business replace Bottomline cheaply?

The published entry points are BILL at $49 per user per month on Essentials and Tipalti AP from $99 a month with unlimited users, both with transaction fees on top.

They cover accounts payable only. Bottomline's wider cash and payments lines have no equivalent at those prices.
