Lever alternatives: 7 applicant tracking tools compared

Lever treats sourcing and applying as one funnel, so a candidate CRM and the applicant tracking system are a single product. Buyers looking past it are mostly worried about momentum, since development has slowed since its acquisition, or they receive plenty of inbound applications and do not source. They move to a faster-moving rival or a simpler pipeline.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Lever

#12 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking

  • Pricing: Quoted; scales with team size and hiring needs
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: A team that sources candidates rather than waiting for them
  • Not for: An employer with high inbound volume and no sourcing

Why buyers look past Lever

  1. 01

A slower roadmap since the acquisition

Development has visibly slowed since Lever was acquired. For a system a talent team lives in every day, that means improvements arrive late, while products that were behind it three years ago have moved ahead on both reporting and the range of tools they connect to.

  2. 02

Funnel numbers end up in a spreadsheet

Lever's reporting trails both Ashby and Greenhouse. A team that has to justify headcount or explain where candidates drop out ends up rebuilding the figures outside the system, which is exactly the work Ashby's native funnel and source analysis is designed to remove.

  3. 03

The CRM is wasted on inbound hiring

The product assumes recruiters hunt for people. An employer with high inbound volume and no sourcing pays for nurture sequences and a candidate database it does not use, under a quoted contract, when a published-price pipeline would cover the applications it actually receives.

What each one does differently

Ashby

United States · Quoted per organisation

An all-in-one product like Lever, but built around trustworthy funnel, source and interviewer-load reporting and the category's best scheduling, the areas where Lever now trails. It is younger, has a smaller integration list, and its pricing assumes a funded company hiring continuously.

Switch from Lever if reporting is the reason you are leaving.

Ashby, #3 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking →

Greenhouse

United States · Quoted by plan and hiring volume

Puts its weight on evaluation, not outreach: interview kits, predefined scorecards and reporting that shows where the process leaks, backed by deep integrations. Lever's strength is the CRM; Greenhouse's is the scorecard. It is expensive and heavy below twenty hires a year.

Switch from Lever if you want structured interviewing enforced and a larger integration list.

Greenhouse, #11 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking →

Workable

United Kingdom · Per month by plan, published

Keeps sourcing inside the product, as Lever does, but sells it at a published price and is running within a week. Its reporting is adequate, not analytical, and pricing tied to hiring volume can surprise a company that scales suddenly.

Switch from Lever if you want built-in sourcing without a quoted enterprise deal.

Workable, #1 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking →

Teamtailor

Sweden · Quoted per organisation

Offers the nurture campaigns and talent pools a Lever user will recognise, but approaches candidates through the careers site and employer brand instead of recruiter outreach. Structured evaluation and analytics are its weaker side, and it is quoted per organisation.

Switch from Lever if you would sooner attract candidates through employer brand than chase them.

Teamtailor, #2 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking →

Pinpoint

United Kingdom · Quoted per organisation; unlimited users

Includes sourcing tools and a careers site builder for in-house teams and prices by organisation with unlimited users, so interviewers are not rationed. Support is a strength. Like Lever it is quoted, and its feature cadence is slower than the venture-funded American products.

Switch from Lever if you want every hiring manager inside the system with responsive support.

Pinpoint, #9 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking →

Recruitee

Netherlands · Per month by plan, published

A published-price system centred on collaborative review, for teams where everyone interviews, in place of Lever's recruiter-led CRM. Automation and analytics stop earlier than the leaders and there are fewer assessment integrations, so it is a simpler product and not a like-for-like one.

Switch from Lever if your hiring is mostly inbound and shared across the team.

Recruitee, #4 of 14 in our applicant tracking ranking →

SmartRecruiters

United States · Quoted per organisation

Built for high-volume, multi-country hiring with agencies and assessment vendors managed in a marketplace inside the platform, a larger operation than the sourcing-led teams Lever suits. Configuration is a project with a partner and the interface shows its enterprise ancestry.

Switch from Lever if you hire across many countries and need agencies managed in the platform.

When Lever is still the right choice

Lever still fits a team that sources candidates instead of waiting for them and wants outreach, nurture and applications in one pipeline view. The nurture sequences work well and the CRM-plus-ATS design is the reason to have it. If your recruiters use that daily, your reports are good enough, and the integrations you need exist, a slower roadmap is an irritation and not a reason to migrate.

What moving off Lever involves

  1. 01

Prospects and applicants are one dataset

Because Lever keeps sourced prospects and applicants in a single funnel, an export contains people who never applied. Check where the next system puts them: Teamtailor has talent pools and Workable has sourcing built in, while a simple pipeline tool may only hold applications.

  2. 02

    Nurture sequences must be rebuilt

Nurture sequences are configuration, not records, so plan to recreate them by hand. Note which are live and who is mid-sequence, then rebuild them in the replacement or accept that ongoing conversations move to recruiters' inboxes during the changeover.

  3. 03

Retention rules cover sourced people too

Notes on candidates you approached are personal data with a retention clock, the same as applications. Agree how long each record is kept before importing years of CRM history, and confirm the new system can answer a candidate's request to see what you hold.

Questions about replacing Lever

4 answers
Is Lever still being actively developed?

Our data records that development has slowed noticeably since Lever's acquisition, and that its reporting and integration ecosystem now trail products that were behind it three years ago.

It continues to work as a combined CRM and ATS; the concern is pace, which matters most to teams waiting on specific improvements.

Which Lever alternative has a candidate CRM?

Teamtailor offers nurture campaigns and talent pools, and Workable and Pinpoint both include sourcing tools. None is described in our data as merging CRM and ATS into one pipeline the way Lever does, so test how sourced prospects are handled before committing.

Is Ashby better than Lever?

On reporting and scheduling, yes: Ashby's analytics are native and trustworthy, and Lever's reporting trails it.

Ashby is a younger product with a smaller integration list and is priced for funded companies. A team whose main activity is outbound sourcing should examine how Ashby handles nurture before switching.

What is a lower-cost alternative to Lever?

Lever is quoted per organisation. Workable, Recruitee, JazzHR and Breezy HR publish their prices, and Breezy HR has a free plan covering one open position with unlimited users. Most are lighter systems for employers whose candidates apply; Workable is the one with sourcing built in.
