Checkr alternatives: 13 background check tools compared

Checkr alternatives are sought by three groups. Small hirers who find the per-report price climbs quickly once county, state and federal searches are needed, organisations that hire outside the United States, and buyers who want a full-service screening firm rather than a self-serve platform. They move to a cheaper US package, to a vendor with international coverage, or to one of the large screening houses.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Checkr in our background check ranking are GoodHire, First Advantage and Sterling (now First Advantage). Choose GoodHire if you want Checkr's pricing with a platform aimed at small and mid-sized employers. All 13 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Background Check Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Checkr.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Checkr

#1 of 14 in our background check ranking

  • Pricing: Per report: Basic $29.99, Essential $59.99, Complete $94.99, plus custom Enterprise pricing
  • Established in: United States
01

Why buyers look past Checkr

  1. 01

The criminal search depth is what you pay for

Checkr's published packages start at $29.99 per report (Basic), $59.99 (Essential) and $94.99 (Complete). Basic covers a national criminal database search, SSN trace, sex offender registry and global watchlist. Unlimited county searches begin at Essential, and unlimited state plus federal searches only at Complete. A hirer who needs the thorough search for every role is therefore paying the top price for each candidate.

  2. 02

The published price is not the whole price

Checkr states that standard third-party court and database access fees may apply and are passed through at cost with no markup. Those fees are listed separately and sit on top of the per-report figure, so the invoice for a single check can exceed the package price. Add-ons such as motor vehicle records, identity verification and drug screening are charged on top as well.

  3. 03

Enterprise features are behind a sales call

The Enterprise tier is custom priced and is where Checkr lists automated adjudication, customised workflows and its 200+ ATS integrations. A company that has outgrown the self-serve packages gets no further published price to compare, which is the usual moment to ask other screening vendors for a quote.

04

When Checkr is still the right choice

Checkr remains the straightforward choice when you hire in the United States, want to sign up and pay per report without a sales process, and are happy with a published ladder from $29.99 to $94.99. Its Enterprise tier adds automated adjudication and 200+ ATS integrations, and the pass-through fees are stated openly. A hirer who needs criminal searches in a single country and a self-serve account will find few quoted-only vendors easier to start with.

05

What moving off Checkr involves

  1. 01

Check what the new vendor passes through

Both Checkr and iprospectcheck pass court and database fees through on top of the package price. Ask any replacement for the all-in cost of one typical check, including those fees and add-ons, and compare that figure, not the headline package.

  2. 02

Candidate consent and records move separately

Reports already issued sit in your Checkr account and the candidate's own Checkr profile. Export what your compliance policy requires before you close the account, and plan for new candidate consent flows and ATS integration work with the new vendor.

Questions about replacing Checkr

6 answers
How much does Checkr cost per report?

Checkr publishes Basic from $29.99, Essential from $59.99 and Complete from $94.99 per report. Third-party court and database access fees are passed through at cost and are not included. Enterprise pricing is custom.

Is GoodHire a real alternative to Checkr?

GoodHire lists the same packages at the same starting prices, and its own site says Checkr acquired its parent Inflection in April 2022. It is a different product front end, but not an independent vendor.

What happened to Sterling?

Sterling's website says it is now a First Advantage company, and that its services are moving onto the First Advantage platform. The acquisition is referenced on the page at $2.2 billion.

Which alternatives publish prices?

GoodHire, iprospectcheck, Certn, PESCHECK and Veremark publish prices. First Advantage, HireRight, Accurate Background, Vetty, RefNow, HiPeople and Sterling quote on request, and Zinc does not publish per-check prices.

Which option suits hiring in Europe?

PESCHECK (Netherlands, with a Munich office) and Zinc (DBS, VOG and Führungszeugnis checks listed) describe European checks directly. Checkr's pricing page describes county, state and federal US searches.

Can I replace Checkr with a reference-check tool?

Only for part of the process. RefNow and HiPeople cover references and, in RefNow's case, DBS checks, but HiPeople's site does not mention criminal background checks.
