Sage Accounting alternatives: 11 accounting tools compared

People look for a Sage Accounting alternative when the plan ladder stops fitting: Start allows one user and no purchase invoices, Standard three users, and each extra user or receipt-capture bundle is billed on top. They move to cloud ledgers that count users differently, to a free tier, or to a Nordic, Dutch or French package if the business is not UK-based.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Sage Accounting in our accounting software ranking are Xero, QuickBooks Online and FreeAgent. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Xero if you want unlimited users and a ladder priced by volume, not by logins. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Accounting Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Sage Accounting.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Why buyers look past Sage Accounting

  1. 01

Users and purchase invoices are tied to the tier

Sage's UK subscription notice lists one client user on Start, three on Standard and unlimited on Plus. Start covers sales invoices only; purchase invoices begin at Standard. A sole trader who later hires a bookkeeper therefore has to change plan, not just add a login, while Xero states that it charges no per-user licence fees.

  2. 02

Inventory, multicurrency and budgets only on the top plan

According to the same notice, inventory management, multicurrency management and budget management are marked for Plus alone. A business that sells in euros and nothing else still moves to the highest tier. Zoho Books lists multi-currency transactions from its Professional plan, the second of its paid steps, at 24 pounds a month.

  3. 03

Add-ons are priced per user and per document

The notice gives Sage Copilot as an optional add-on at 20 pounds per user per month, which it also names as the cost of each extra user. Receipt capture stops at 30 documents on Standard and 100 on Plus, then costs 20p per document. We could not load Sage's own price page (the site returned a block page), so check the current plan prices there.

Xero, #7 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

QuickBooks Online

United States · Free plan with tight limits; paid per month by plan, published

Five tiers on its UK page from Sole Trader Plus (1 user) to Advanced (25 users), each with a 30-day free trial. Its live prices did not render for us, so quotes must be read in the checkout. Payroll is a separate add-on, and Advanced needs a demo booking.

QuickBooks Online, #8 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

FreeAgent

United Kingdom · Per month, published; free with some UK business accounts

A single-plan product from a company registered in Edinburgh, with a 30-day trial and no contract or set-up fee. The page we could load showed US dollars: 22 a month, 220 a year, with Smart Capture Unlimited as a 6 dollar add-on. Its UK pound price was not visible to us.

Switch from Sage Accounting if you are a freelancer or micro company who prefers one plan to a tier ladder.

FreeAgent, #6 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

Zoho Books

India · Free tier under $50K annual revenue; paid per organisation per month, published

Starts with a pound-0 plan for one user plus one accountant, capped at 1,000 invoices and 1,000 expenses a year, then Standard at 12 pounds monthly (10 annual) for three users. Extra users cost 2.50 a month. A 14-day trial covers every feature. Its entry plan files MTD for Income Tax.

Switch from Sage Accounting if your bookkeeping is simple enough to start at no licence cost.

Zoho Books, #9 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

FreshBooks

Switch from Sage Accounting if you bill clients for time and projects and have little else to book.

Wave

Exact Online

Netherlands · Per month by package, published; Essentials from 49 EUR, Premium 299 EUR

Dutch package with four tiers on its Dutch price page: Essentials 49 euros, Plus 99, Professional 159 and Premium 299 a month. Essentials includes one user and one bookkeeping file that cannot be expanded. Extra users cost 23 euros on Plus and Professional, 49 on Premium. A 30-day trial is offered.

French platform billed in euros: Starter 7, Basique 14, Essentiel 24 and Premium with an accounting module 79 a month excluding VAT, each for one user and up to 1,200 invoices a year. A 15-day trial is offered. Its accounting and tax-filing features target French regulation, not HMRC.

Switch from Sage Accounting if your business is French or your accountant works on Pennylane.

Pennylane, #2 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

Fortnox

Sweden · Packages or single modules per month, published; mandatory Access fee scales with transaction volume

Swedish-language packages priced in kronor: Mini from 238, Liten from 378, Mellan+ from 688 and Stor+ from 948 a month, on top of an Access fee set by voucher count. Newly started companies get a free half-year. Users are unlimited, but each needs a licence per program.

Switch from Sage Accounting if you are a Swedish company that wants invoicing, payroll and ledger in one package.

Fortnox, #3 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

NetSuite

United States · Quoted per organisation

An Oracle product sold as an annual licence made of a core platform, optional modules and a user count, plus a one-time implementation fee. No prices are published on the page we could read. It suits finance teams that have outgrown entry-level ledgers, not a sole trader on Sage Start.

Switch from Sage Accounting if you have several entities, consolidation needs and a budget for implementation.

NetSuite, #12 of 12 in our accounting software ranking →

Visma eAccounting

Norway · Per month by plan, published

A Dutch cloud ledger from Visma eAccounting BV in Amsterdam, part of the Norwegian Visma group. Its Dutch page lists three plans: Factureren at 11 euros, Standaard at 28 and Pro at 36 a month, with a free trial. Standaard adds the direct bank link and the VAT return, so it is the realistic tier for most firms.

Switch from Sage Accounting if you run a Dutch company and want VAT returns and bank feeds built for the Netherlands.

04

When Sage Accounting is still the right choice

Sage Accounting remains reasonable for a VAT-registered sole trader on Start who sends sales invoices only and works alone, and for a business that sits on Plus and uses inventory, multicurrency and budgets together, since those three are bundled in one tier with unlimited users. If your accountant already works in Sage and you stay under the capture limits, the saving from moving may not cover the migration hours.

05

What moving off Sage Accounting involves

  1. 01

Run both packages through one VAT quarter before you cancel

Most challengers offer a trial: Xero one month free, FreeAgent 30 days, QuickBooks Online 30 days, Exact Online 30 days, Zoho Books 14 days, Pennylane 15 days. Load opening balances and last year's transactions in the trial, reconcile one bank account, and compare the VAT figure with Sage before you move live.

  2. 02

Count what you actually use before you compare prices

List your user logins, monthly receipt captures, invoices and bills, and whether you need multi-currency, inventory or payroll. These counts decide the real cost: Xero's Ignite caps invoices and bills, Zoho Books and Exact Online charge for extra users, Fortnox adds a voucher-based Access fee. We could not read Sage's export documentation, so confirm in Sage's help centre which reports and attachments you can take out.

Questions about replacing Sage Accounting

6 answers
How many users does Sage Accounting allow in the UK?

Sage's UK subscription notice lists one client user on Start, three on Standard and unlimited on Plus. The same notice gives 20 pounds per user per month for Sage Copilot, and names that figure as the cost of each extra user.

Which Sage Accounting plan includes purchase invoices?

Standard and Plus. The notice marks purchase invoices as not available on Start, which lists CIS for sales only. Inventory, multicurrency and budgets appear on Plus alone.

Which alternative charges nothing per user?

Xero states on its UK pricing page that its plans carry no per-user licence fees, though payroll headcount and expense claimants are capped by plan. Fortnox also reports unlimited users, but it needs a licence per user per program.

Is there a free alternative to Sage Accounting?

Zoho Books offers a free plan for one user plus one accountant, limited to 1,000 invoices and 1,000 expenses a year. Wave lists a free Starter plan, with card payments charged per transaction. Both have paid steps above them.

Does QuickBooks Online publish its UK prices?

Its UK pricing page names five plans from Sole Trader Plus to Advanced, but the monthly figures loaded dynamically and did not appear in our fetch. Read them in the checkout, where a new-customer discount can apply for a stated number of months.

Can a larger business replace Sage Accounting with NetSuite?

NetSuite is sold as an annual licence with a core platform, optional modules and a user count, plus a one-time implementation fee. The page does not publish amounts, so the cost is only known after a quote.
