Backblaze alternatives: 12 backup tools compared

People look for a Backblaze alternative when they need to protect something its computer backup does not cover, such as servers, virtual machines or SaaS data, or when they want to choose their own storage instead of buying it from Backblaze. Most move to tools that write to a destination of their choice, to NAS-based software, or to platforms sold per workload.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Backblaze in our backup software ranking are Duplicati, restic and Iperius Backup. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Duplicati if you want to keep the same cloud storage but own the software and the encryption. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Backup Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Backblaze.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Backblaze

#4 of 14 in our backup software ranking

  • Pricing: Per computer per year or per TB per month, published
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Someone who wants unlimited backup or very cheap object storage
  • Not for: An enterprise needing instant recovery
01

Why buyers look past Backblaze

  1. 01

Computer backup is built for computers, not servers

Backblaze's terms say its unlimited computer backup covers individual computers and directly attached external drives, and does not permit use with servers, data centers, shared storage systems or other enterprise infrastructure not expressly covered. Its business page describes Macs and PCs only. A team with a file server or virtual machines needs a second product.

  2. 02

Storage and software come as one package

Backblaze Computer Backup writes to Backblaze's own cloud: $9 a month for personal use, or $99 a year per computer for business, both unlimited. You cannot point it at a NAS, an S3 bucket or a second provider. Tools that separate software from storage let you move the data without changing the backup agent.

  3. 03

Longer retention and compliance cost extra

The standard plans keep a year of version history. Forever retention is an optional paid extra, and OIDC single sign-on, restricted restore access and enhanced backup lock-down sit in Enterprise Control, which is quoted rather than priced. Buyers who need these controls cannot compare a published figure first.

What each one does differently

Duplicati

Switzerland · Free and open source (MIT); optional management console from $2 per machine per month, published

Open-source backup client (the core is MIT licensed) that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and writes to storage you pick, including Backblaze B2, S3, SFTP and NAS. The optional management console starts free for 2 machines and costs $2 per machine per month on the Pro plan with annual billing. You carry the restore testing yourself.

Switch from Backblaze if you want to keep the same cloud storage but own the software and the encryption.

Duplicati, #7 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

restic

Germany · Free open source

A single command-line program under the BSD 2-Clause licence for Linux, macOS, Windows and BSD, with no server needed. Its manual lists local disks, SFTP, S3-compatible storage and Backblaze B2 as repositories, and recommends reaching B2 through its S3 API. There is no graphical interface or vendor support.

Switch from Backblaze if you are comfortable with scripts and want a free, scriptable engine on mixed operating systems.

restic, #2 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Iperius Backup

Italy · Perpetual licence per edition, published, from EUR 29 to EUR 299; free edition for basic file backup

Windows-focused backup sold as perpetual licences: EUR 59 for the Basic edition, EUR 199 for the database or Microsoft 365 editions, EUR 219 for virtual machines and EUR 299 for Full. It lists Backblaze among its cloud destinations, plus NAS, FTP and tape. It is a licence per machine, not an unlimited plan, and the pages we read do not mention macOS.

Switch from Backblaze if you run Windows PCs and servers and prefer a one-off licence to a yearly fee.

Iperius Backup, #8 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Synology Active Backup

Taiwan · Free with a Synology NAS; you pay for the box

Backs up Windows PCs, Macs, physical servers, file servers and VMware or Hyper-V machines to a Synology NAS, with global deduplication, changed block tracking and bare-metal recovery media. The software runs on the NAS you own, so storage capacity is bought as hardware. Synology also offers C2 Backup with a 30-day trial for cloud copies.

Switch from Backblaze if you want backups kept on a NAS in your own office with server and virtual machine coverage.

Synology Active Backup, #5 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Acronis Cyber Protect

Switzerland · Per workload per year, published

Covers Windows, macOS and Linux endpoints, Windows and Linux servers, VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, and Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Storage can be Acronis Cloud, local disks, partner-hosted or public clouds such as Amazon S3 and Azure. Standard, Advanced and Backup Advanced editions are annual subscriptions, and the product page shows no prices.

Switch from Backblaze if you need endpoints, servers and SaaS in one console with a choice of storage location.

Acronis Cyber Protect, #11 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Xopero ONE

Poland · Subscription or perpetual licence, quoted

Polish backup platform for Windows, Linux and Mac endpoints, Windows and Linux servers, VMware and Hyper-V, Microsoft 365 and Git hosting such as GitHub and GitLab. The company's own site points buyers to partners and a custom demo, and we found no published price. It is aimed at IT teams rather than individuals.

Switch from Backblaze if you want one platform for endpoints, servers and Git repositories, bought through a reseller.

Xopero ONE, #10 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

United States · Per workload subscription billed annually, or perpetual per CPU socket, published; one-year Free Edition for 10 workloads

Priced per workload, billed annually, with at least 5 workloads per order. One workload is a VM, a physical server or 3 workstations. Backblaze B2 is a listed backup target, next to S3, Azure and Wasabi. Microsoft 365 is licensed per user and NAS shares per terabyte. It targets infrastructure, not single home computers.

Switch from Backblaze if you protect virtual machines and servers and want to keep Backblaze B2 as the storage.

NAKIVO Backup & Replication, #6 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Veeam

United States · Free tier for up to 10 workloads (Community Edition); paid per workload, quoted through resellers

Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition is free for up to 10 workloads and covers Proxmox VE, VMware, Hyper-V, Windows and Linux servers, laptops and NAS. Beyond 10 workloads you move to paid licences, which the pages we read do not price. It is an infrastructure product with a larger learning curve than Backblaze.

Switch from Backblaze if you manage a small mixed estate of up to ten machines and want a free tier with room to grow.

Veeam, #12 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Proxmox Backup Server

Austria · Free to use; support subscriptions per backup server from EUR 560 a year, published

Open-source (AGPLv3) backup server that is free to download and use, built for Proxmox VE virtual machines and containers, with a Linux client for physical hosts. Support subscriptions are priced per backup server per year, from EUR 560 for the Community tier, which is for non-production use. It does not back up Windows desktops.

Switch from Backblaze if your workloads run on Proxmox and you want deduplicated backups on your own hardware.

Proxmox Backup Server, #3 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Rewind

Canada · Per app per month, often per user, published; free plan only for small Klaviyo and Mailchimp accounts

Backs up cloud app data, not computers: Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Bitbucket, Shopify, QuickBooks, Trello and more. Priced per user per month, from $4.00 on Standard and $5.20 on Advanced, with a free trial rather than a free plan. It complements a computer backup; it does not replace one.

Switch from Backblaze if the data you worry about lives in SaaS apps rather than on laptops.

Rewind, #1 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Commvault

United States · Quoted per organisation; capacity or workload licensing; 30-day trial of Commvault Cloud

Enterprise data protection platform for cloud, hybrid and on-premises estates, with cyber recovery and identity resilience features. The pages we read show no prices and point to sales. Headquarters are in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. It is far larger in scope than a per-computer backup plan.

Switch from Backblaze if your estate is large and mixed and a vendor sales process is acceptable.

Commvault, #14 of 14 in our backup software ranking →

Cohesity NetBackup

United States · Quoted per organisation

NetBackup is now presented on Cohesity's website, and Cohesity lists its headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The product page we read shows no price and offers a free trial and contact options. It is enterprise software, so the effort and cost are out of proportion for a handful of laptops.

Switch from Backblaze if you already run NetBackup in a large data centre and are consolidating vendors.

When Backblaze is still the right choice

Backblaze stays the sensible choice when the job is Macs and Windows PCs and nothing else. One flat price per computer, no storage quota, a native client, a year of version history and the option of a restore drive shipped by mail are hard to match with a mix of software and separate storage. Business accounts add group management and deployment through Jamf, Intune and similar tools. If your files are on laptops, the cheaper route is usually to stay.

05

What moving off Backblaze involves

  1. 01

List what the current backup actually holds

Backblaze keeps one year of version history by default. Before you cancel, decide how much of that history you need to carry over, because a new tool starts with a fresh first backup. Keep the Backblaze account until the new one has finished its first full upload and you have restored a test folder.

  2. 02

    Plan the first upload

Unlimited backups can be large. A new tool has to send the whole data set again, either to a cloud store or to a NAS. Check upload speed against data size, and use any throttling or seeding option the tool offers so the first run does not saturate the office connection.

  3. 03

Decide who holds the encryption key

Backblaze offers an optional private encryption key. Tools such as restic state that losing the repository password means the data is irrecoverably lost. Store the key and password in a place that does not depend on the machine being backed up.

Questions about replacing Backblaze

6 answers
What does Backblaze Computer Backup cost?

Its personal page shows $9 a month, $8.25 a month billed yearly, or $7.88 a month billed every two years, for unlimited backup of one computer. The business page shows $99 per computer per year. Enterprise Control is quoted.

Can Backblaze back up a server or NAS?

Not under its computer backup plans. The terms say the unlimited service does not permit use with servers, data centers or shared storage systems. Backblaze sells B2 Cloud Storage separately, from $6.95 per terabyte per month, which backup software can write to.

Is there a free Backblaze plan?

The pages we checked offer a free trial, with no credit card, rather than a permanent free plan. Free tools include Duplicati and restic, and Veeam Community Edition covers up to 10 workloads.

Which alternatives let me keep using Backblaze B2 storage?

Duplicati, restic, Iperius Backup and NAKIVO each list Backblaze B2 as a destination. You then pay Backblaze for storage and the other vendor, or nobody, for the software.

Which alternative suits a small office with a NAS?

Synology Active Backup backs up Windows PCs, Macs and servers to a Synology NAS. Duplicati also writes to NAS storage over SFTP or SMB, according to its own page.

Where is Backblaze based?

Backblaze, Inc. lists a corporate mailing address in San Francisco, California. Its about page describes it as a remote-first company, and its site states it is publicly traded under the symbol BLZE.
