Acronis Cyber Protect alternatives: 10 backup tools compared

Teams look beyond Acronis Cyber Protect when the licence structure gets in the way: the edition that covers Microsoft 365 is a separate one, prices sit behind a sales contact, and the security modules come with the backup whether wanted or not. The alternatives below range from Polish and Austrian vendors to open-source tools and the market's best-known name.

Short answer: Xopero ONE, Iperius Backup and Proxmox Backup Server head the list of Acronis Cyber Protect alternatives drawn from our backup software ranking. Ranking order favours the challenger over the household name, so the best-known vendors begin at place 4 where the category allows it. Xopero ONE is the one to try if you want a European vendor with servers, laptops, Microsoft 365 and code repositories in one console. Each of the 10 alternatives sits in Best Backup Software in 2026 and is described against Acronis Cyber Protect.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Acronis Cyber Protect

#11 of 16 in our backup software ranking

  • Pricing: Per workload per year, published
  • Established in: Switzerland
  • Built for: A company that wants backup and ransomware protection in one agent
  • Not for: A team that already runs a separate EDR

Why buyers look past Acronis Cyber Protect

  1. 01

Microsoft 365 needs the Backup Advanced edition

Acronis's buying page says Microsoft 365 backup is supported only in the Backup Advanced edition, and that Google Workspace sits there too. Those workloads are sold in packs of five seats on one-, three- or five-year terms. A company that started with servers on a Standard licence and later adds a mail tenant has to look at a different edition, not just more seats.

  2. 02

Three editions and several licence types to choose between

The product page names Standard, Backup Advanced and Advanced, and the buying page adds server, Windows Essentials and workstation licences, plus email archiving as a separate edition. It also notes that each cluster node needs a licence and that the cloud deployment lacks some Advanced features. Working out which combination matches your estate takes a call or a reseller.

  3. 03

The price list is not on the page we read

The buying page gives no per-workload amounts and refers visitors to sales by phone, with a trial link whose length it does not state. Cloud storage bundled with a subscription is valid only for the licensed workload and cannot be shared with others. For a buyer who wants to compare totals before talking to anyone, that is a delay.

What each one does differently

Xopero ONE

Poland · On request

Xopero ONE comes from Poland and puts VMware and Hyper-V hosts, Windows and Linux servers, Windows, Linux and Mac endpoints, Microsoft 365 and GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab and Jira repositories under one console. Storage is your choice, including its own cloud, AWS, Azure or a NAS. The pages we read show no prices and point to a quote form or a demo, so the first conversation looks like the one Acronis asks for.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if you want a European vendor with servers, laptops, Microsoft 365 and code repositories in one console.

Iperius Backup

Italy · Published

Iperius is a Windows program sold as an all-in-one perpetual licence, with a free edition to download first. It covers Hyper-V with failover clusters, ESXi with vCenter, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and Exchange on-premise or online. The page we read lists no euro amounts. There is no anti-malware layer in the description, so security tooling stays a separate purchase.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if a few Windows servers need backing up and a one-off licence suits the budget better than a subscription.

Proxmox Backup Server

Austria · Published

Proxmox Backup Server is built in Vienna and every feature is open to every subscriber. The yearly price is per server: Community at €560, Basic at €1,120, Standard at €2,240 and Premium at €4,480, with unlimited storage and clients in all four. It backs up VMs and containers of every guest type plus Linux hosts through its client. Windows laptops and Microsoft 365 are not described.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if your workloads run on Proxmox or Linux hosts and support should be priced per backup server.

Duplicati

Switzerland · Published

Duplicati's free plan monitors up to two machines, and Pro adds alerts, remote management and priority support at $2 to $2.50 per machine a month, with 100 GB of storage per machine. Extra storage is $0.60 per 100 GB monthly, and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace users cost $0.50 a month each. Files are encrypted before they leave the machine, and you choose the destination.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if you have laptops and a few servers, want to see prices up front and can handle a lighter tool.

restic

Germany · Published

restic is a single executable for Linux, BSD, Mac and Windows under the BSD 2-Clause licence. It deduplicates, encrypts, can verify that files restore and writes to many storage back ends. Nothing here schedules jobs, sends alerts or offers a console, so the operating procedures around it are yours to write and rehearse.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if an engineer will script backups and you want no licence, no agent and no vendor contract.

Synology Active Backup

Taiwan · Published

Active Backup for Business runs on a Synology NAS and protects Windows PCs, Macs, physical servers and virtual machines, with USB or ISO boot media for bare-metal restore. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace have their own feature pages. The page we read states no licence charge, and a 30-day trial exists for the vendor's C2 cloud. The NAS is hardware you buy and place yourself.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if you already own a Synology NAS and want office machines and servers backed up to it.

Synology Active Backup, #5 of 16 in our backup software ranking →

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

United States · Published

NAKIVO sells subscriptions per workload, billed annually with a five-workload minimum per order, or perpetual licences by socket, server, workstation or terabyte. The Pro and Enterprise Essentials editions stop at 50 workloads per organisation; Enterprise Plus is for larger estates. Microsoft 365 is licensed per user from 10 users. The page gives no amounts, only starting points.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if you run VMware or Hyper-V and want to choose between a subscription and a one-time licence.

Rewind

Canada · Published

Rewind backs up cloud apps rather than machines: Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Trello, monday.com, QuickBooks, Miro, Shopify, BigCommerce, Klaviyo and Mailchimp. Prices are per user per month, from $4.00 on Standard and $5.20 on Advanced, with a free trial whose length is not given. It adds no servers or laptops, so it fills a SaaS gap and nothing more.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if the data you worry about lives in Shopify, GitHub or Jira rather than on servers.

Full verdict on Rewind, which sits at number 1 of 16 for backup software →

Backblaze

United States · Published

Backblaze Computer Backup costs $9 a month, $8.25 on annual billing or $189 for two years, with unlimited data and a 15-day trial without a card. Native clients cover Mac and Windows, while the phone apps only restore. Web restores are capped at 500 GB per request. Servers are not mentioned on the page we read.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if the job is a handful of laptops or workstations that need a flat price per machine.

Why Backblaze is #4 among 16 backup software products →

Veeam

United States · Published

Veeam Community Edition protects up to 10 workloads for free, including Proxmox VE, VMware, Hyper-V, Windows and Linux servers, laptops and NAS. It comes without technical support. The step up is Veeam Data Platform Essentials, which the page puts at up to 50 workloads. Veeam is the largest name on this list, with the broadest platform coverage.

Switch from Acronis Cyber Protect if you have virtual infrastructure and want to start free, then grow into a paid edition.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You run virtual machines on Proxmox

Proxmox Backup Server: Subscriptions start at €560 per server a year and every plan includes all features and unlimited storage.

  2. 02

You need one console for servers, laptops, Microsoft 365 and code repositories

Xopero ONE: It lists VMware, Hyper-V, Windows, Linux and Mac endpoints, Microsoft 365 and GitHub, GitLab or Jira; prices come by quote.

  3. 03

You want a one-off licence for Windows servers

Iperius Backup: It backs up Hyper-V, ESXi, SQL Server and Exchange under a perpetual licence, with a free edition to test first.

  4. 04

You already own a Synology NAS

Synology Active Backup: It protects PCs, Macs, servers and VMs with boot media for bare-metal restore; the page states no licence fee.

  5. 05

Your critical data sits in cloud apps

Rewind: It covers Shopify, GitHub, Jira and QuickBooks, from $4.00 per user a month on Standard.

04

When Acronis Cyber Protect is still the right choice

Acronis remains the stronger choice when backup and endpoint security should come from one vendor. Its Cyber Protect page describes AI-based ransomware protection, anti-malware, exploit prevention and URL filtering next to backup, with malware scanning of backups in the Acronis Cloud and of disaster recovery replicas before restore. The company states a Swiss headquarters in Schaffhausen, SOC 2 and GDPR compliance pages, and a local deployment for a private datacentre. It lists a wide range of workloads, from Windows and macOS to Nutanix, Proxmox and Microsoft 365. If your team already relies on those security modules, replacing them means buying a second product.

05

What moving off Acronis Cyber Protect involves

  1. 01

Inventory workloads and which edition covers each

List servers, VMs, workstations, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace seats, and note the licence type behind each. Since the buying page ties seats and cloud storage to licensed workloads, the list shows what must be replaced and what can wait.

  2. 02

Keep restore access to old archives

Before cancelling, restore a sample from the Acronis Cloud and from any local archive, and decide how long old backups are retained. Run old and new tools in parallel until a full restore has worked on the new one.

  3. 03

Decide what happens to the security layer

If anti-malware and URL filtering ran through the Acronis agent, plan its replacement before uninstalling. Pilot on one site, then move the rest.

Questions about replacing Acronis Cyber Protect

6 answers
What is the best alternative to Acronis Cyber Protect?

Xopero ONE ranks first in our list, since it covers servers, endpoints, Microsoft 365 and code repositories from a Polish vendor. Iperius Backup and Proxmox Backup Server follow, and the right pick depends on whether your estate is Windows, Proxmox or mixed.

Which Acronis alternative suits a small company with a few servers?

Iperius Backup sells a perpetual licence for Windows servers and databases, and Duplicati's free plan covers two machines. NAKIVO fits once VMs are involved, and its smaller editions are limited to 50 workloads.

Is there a free alternative to Acronis?

restic is free under the BSD 2-Clause licence, Duplicati has an always-free plan for up to 2 machines, and Veeam Community Edition covers 10 workloads without technical support. Proxmox Backup Server's lowest subscription is €560 per server a year.

Can I back up Microsoft 365 without Acronis?

Duplicati lists $0.50 per Microsoft 365 user a month, NAKIVO licenses it per user from 10 users, Xopero ONE and Synology Active Backup both list Microsoft 365 support. Acronis itself requires the Backup Advanced edition for it.

Which alternative backs up cloud apps like Shopify or GitHub?

Rewind covers GitHub, Shopify, QuickBooks, Jira and others at $4.00 per user a month on Standard. Xopero ONE lists GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab and Jira as well.

Does an Acronis alternative include anti-ransomware protection?

The pages we read for the alternatives describe backup features, not endpoint security. Backups can be kept offsite or on separate storage, but malware protection would be a second product. Acronis is the only one here whose page describes it inside the backup agent.
