AutoCAD alternatives are sought by drafting offices that pay a yearly subscription for what is mostly 2D DWG work, and by designers whose real job is 3D modelling, building design or manufacturing. Most move to a DWG-compatible drafting tool with a perpetual licence, to a free 2D editor, or to a 3D package built for their trade.

01
Why buyers look past AutoCAD
01
A subscription for work that is mostly drafting
Autodesk sells AutoCAD by subscription and shows a starting price of 175 US dollars a month on its overview page, with a 15-day free trial. An office that opens, edits and plots DWG files all year pays that every year. BricsCAD, ZWCAD and ARES Commander sell perpetual licences for the same file format.
02
Specialised toolsets sit on top of the base product
AutoCAD adds Architecture, Mechanical, MEP, Electrical, Plant 3D, Map 3D and Raster Design toolsets, and an AEC Collection that bundles many of them. That suits a firm using several. A user who needs only 2D drawing and blocks can feel the product is larger than the task, and look at tools with a smaller scope.
03
The drawing is not always the right model
AutoCAD works in 2D and 3D, but many AutoCAD users model products, buildings or surfaces. Fusion, Onshape, Rhino, SketchUp and Archicad are built around 3D parametric, surface or building-information workflows. Moving there is a change of method, not just of vendor, and DWG remains the exchange format with colleagues.

Octave BricsCAD
Belgium · Perpetual licence or one- or three-year subscription, published, per edition from Lite to Ultimate
Octave BricsCAD is DWG-based and sold in levels: Lite for 2D, Pro for 2D and 3D, BIM and Mechanical toolsets, and an Ultimate Bundle that combines mechanical, building and surveying. It positions itself directly against AutoCAD. Its BIM and Mechanical toolsets mirror AutoCAD's toolset structure, so the saving is mainly in the licence, not the workflow.
Switch from AutoCAD if you want the nearest DWG replacement with familiar commands and industry toolsets.
China · Perpetual licence per seat, published: Standard from €799, Professional from €1,299, excluding VAT; optional yearly maintenance; also through resellers
ZWCAD is made by ZWSOFT in Guangzhou, China, reads DWG, DXF and DWT files, and is sold with a perpetual licence from 899 US dollars on ZWSOFT's page, with network licences available. The ZWSOFT page we read refers only to Windows. It is a drafting tool with a lower entry price than AutoCAD.
Switch from AutoCAD if you run Windows, draw mostly in 2D and want to buy a licence once.
Germany · Perpetual licence from €595 with a year of updates, or Trinity plans from €225 adding browser and mobile, published
ARES Commander from Graebert is native DWG software for Windows, macOS and Linux, sold as a perpetual licence from 595 euros, with Trinity subscriptions from 225 euros that add the ARES Kudo browser editor and the ARES Touch mobile app. A single licence covers two computers on different operating systems.
Switch from AutoCAD if your team mixes Windows, Mac and Linux and wants a browser and mobile editor.
Switzerland · Free and open source Community Edition under GPLv3; Professional edition a one-off €50.82 including VAT, with a year of updates, published
QCAD is a 2D-only drafting application from RibbonSoft in Switzerland, released as open source under GPL version 3 and free to download. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, handles DXF and DWG, ships a library of over 4,800 parts and has JavaScript scripting. It has no 3D, and no toolsets for architecture or plant design.
Switch from AutoCAD if you only need flat 2D drawings and want free, open source software.
Belgium · Free and open source under LGPL; no licence or support contract
FreeCAD is an open source parametric 3D modeller developed by a community, with workbenches for product design, architecture, BIM and CAM, and file support for STEP, IGES, STL, DXF and IFC. It is free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It is a modelling tool first, so 2D drafting is a weaker fit than in AutoCAD.
Switch from AutoCAD if your work is parametric 3D parts or models and you want no licence fee.
United States · Per user subscription, monthly or annual, published: Go $10.75, Pro $33.25, Studio $71.58 per month billed annually
SketchUp, now sold by Trimble, prices per user on annual billing: Go at 10.75 dollars a month (iPad and web only), Pro at 33.25 with the desktop modeller and LayOut for 2D documentation, and Studio at 71.58 (Windows only). It is a 3D modelling tool with DWG compatibility on Pro, not a drafting replacement.
Switch from AutoCAD if you mostly model in 3D for design presentation and want a low price per user.
United States · Perpetual licence per seat, published; paid version upgrades, optional
Rhino from Robert McNeel and Associates in Seattle is a freeform and NURBS surface modeller with Grasshopper visual programming included. Commercial licences cost 595 to 995 euros once, with optional upgrades and no maintenance fees, and a 90-day evaluation is free. It is aimed at modelling complex shapes, with drafting as a secondary feature.
Switch from AutoCAD if your work is complex surfaces, product or jewellery design and you prefer to own the licence.
United States · Subscription per seat, published; reduced startup and personal tiers
Autodesk Fusion is cloud-based CAD, CAM, simulation and electronics design for product development, at 680 dollars a year for the base plan and 2,040 and 2,190 dollars for the manufacturing and design plans. It comes from the same vendor but addresses mechanical design and machining, not 2D drawing sets.
Switch from AutoCAD if you design and machine physical products and want CAD and CAM in one place.
United States · Per-seat subscription, published: Standard $1,500 and Professional $2,500 per user per year; free plan for non-commercial use with public documents
Onshape is a cloud-native 3D CAD and product data management system running in a browser, priced at 1,500 dollars per user per year for Standard and 2,500 for Professional, with a free plan and an Enterprise tier by quote. Version control and branching are built in. It models parts and assemblies, not 2D architectural drawing sets.
Switch from AutoCAD if your design team collaborates on parts and wants no installed software.
United States · Monthly or annual subscription only; perpetual licences no longer sold; bought via the customer portal store or distributors
Vectorworks sells 3D design software for buildings (integrated BIM), landscapes and entertainment (lighting and stage design), each as its own product family. It targets designers whose work is architecture, landscape or stage, where AutoCAD needs add-on toolsets. It is not a general mechanical drafting tool. We could not confirm its price from Vectorworks' pages.
Switch from AutoCAD if you design landscapes, stages or buildings and want a vertical product.
Hungary · Subscription only for new licences since 2026; through country resellers or, where offered, Graphisoft's online store
Archicad from Graphisoft is building-information modelling software for architects, sold as subscription plans: Studio for solo architects and local teams, Collaborate for multidisciplinary cloud teamwork, and a Max plan listed as coming soon. It replaces drawing-by-line with a model-based building workflow, and is not general-purpose drafting.
Switch from AutoCAD if you are an architecture practice moving from drawings to a building model.
AutoCAD remains the right choice when your clients, consultants and contractors send you AutoCAD DWG files and expect them back unchanged, and when you use its industry toolsets (Architecture, Mechanical, MEP, Electrical, Plant 3D or Map 3D). It runs on desktop, web and mobile, includes Autodesk's Forma Data Management Essentials for shared DWG files, and is the reference everyone else is compared with. If DWG fidelity inside a supply chain matters more than licence cost, switching adds risk.

What moving off AutoCAD involves
01
Test your own drawings, not the demo files
DWG compatibility is claimed by BricsCAD, ZWCAD, ARES Commander and QCAD, but the edge cases are in your own files: dynamic blocks, xrefs, plot styles, custom LISP and fonts. Open a representative set of live drawings in a trial before you buy, and plot them against the AutoCAD result.
02
Custom commands, blocks and add-ons
Scripts, tool palettes and third-party add-ons written for AutoCAD may not run elsewhere. List which you use, check each alternative's API support, and plan to retrain staff on command and interface differences. A phased move, with AutoCAD kept for the toolset-heavy projects, lowers the risk.

Questions about replacing AutoCAD
5 answers
What is the best alternative to AutoCAD?
For DWG-based 2D and 3D drafting, BricsCAD, ZWCAD and ARES Commander are the closest. For free 2D drawing, QCAD is open source. If your work is 3D product design, Fusion, Onshape or Rhino fit better, and for building design, Archicad or Vectorworks.
Is there a free alternative to AutoCAD?
QCAD is free, open source (GPL version 3) and 2D only. FreeCAD is free, open source and a parametric 3D modeller. Onshape has a free plan, and Rhino has a free 90-day evaluation.
Can I buy a CAD licence instead of subscribing?
Yes. ZWCAD, ARES Commander and Rhino are sold as perpetual licences, and Rhino's upgrades are optional. Autodesk sells AutoCAD as a subscription.
How much does AutoCAD cost?
Autodesk's overview page shows a price starting at 175 US dollars a month, with a 15-day free trial and a 30-day return policy on annual and multi-year subscriptions.
The price you see depends on plan, term and region, so check the buy page for your country.
Will my DWG files open in an alternative?
BricsCAD, ZWCAD, ARES Commander and QCAD read DWG. Results vary with complex drawings, so test your own files. Tools like Rhino, SketchUp and Fusion exchange DWG but are not built around it.
