Documentation or quick 3D
AutoCAD is 2D and 3D drafting around DWG, with seven toolsets including Architecture, Electrical, MEP and Plant 3D. SketchUp is the quickest route from sketch to 3D model, and LayOut, part of the Pro plan, turns that model into presentable drawings. They answer different stages of a project: early design visualisation against issued technical drawings. Which wins depends on what you hand over.

Time to become productive
SketchUp's core advantage is speed of learning: a newcomer can produce a usable 3D model on the first day, and the component library means a kitchen or facade rarely starts from nothing. AutoCAD's advantage is different: drafters arrive already trained. For someone who has used neither, SketchUp gets to a result sooner.

Exchanging files with other firms
AutoCAD's case rests on exchange: every consultant, contractor and council sends DWG, and AutoCAD is the original of that format. SketchUp subscribers can import and export DWG and DXF, but the import leaves out dimensions, text and XREFs, and exported faces become triangulated meshes. For multi-party project work where drawings go back and forth, AutoCAD is the safer tool.

Subscription terms
Neither can be bought outright. AutoCAD has been subscription only since 2016, on monthly, annual or three-year terms, with prepaid Flex tokens for occasional use. SketchUp ended perpetual licences in 2020 and sells monthly or annual subscriptions. Both vendors steer users towards their cloud services. On ownership the two are equally unsatisfying, and the choice of terms is much the same.

An architecture practice that needs real building data rather than drafting or quick models should look at Archicad, a BIM authoring tool with careful IFC handling. An office that wants DWG drafting but refuses permanent rental fits BricsCAD, which can still be bought outright.

Yes, for quick 3D results. Someone can produce a usable 3D model in SketchUp on their first day, helped by a ready component library. AutoCAD's strength is a different one: trained drafters are easy to hire, and the program covers precise 2D and 3D drafting.
Can SketchUp replace AutoCAD for construction drawings?
SketchUp's LayOut produces presentable drawings from the model, which covers many interior and joinery jobs. AutoCAD is the choice where DWG must be exchanged daily with consultants and contractors. SketchUp is not parametric or serious BIM, and large detailed models slow down quickly.
Do AutoCAD and SketchUp still sell perpetual licences?
No. AutoCAD has been subscription only since 2016, and its software stops when the subscription lapses. SketchUp ended perpetual licences in 2020 and is sold per user, monthly or annually. Buyers who want to own their drawing software outright need to look elsewhere.
Can SketchUp open AutoCAD DWG files?
Yes, with a subscription. SketchUp imports DWG and DXF and translates lines, arcs, faces, layers, blocks and solid hatches, but it does not bring in dimensions, text or XREFs, and its help warns that files above 15MB may cause performance problems.
It also exports models to DWG or DXF.
What does SketchUp cost compared with AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is listed at $2,095 per year for one user paid annually. SketchUp lists Go at $10.75, Pro at $33.25 and Studio at $71.58 USD per month per user, all billed annually.
Only Pro and Studio include the desktop application and LayOut, and Studio is for Windows only.
