Autodesk Fusion alternatives are sought by teams that want a different licence model than a cloud subscription, by users who do not want design, manufacturing, simulation and electronics tied into one cloud platform, and by buyers whose real work is drafting, surfaces or building design. They move to another parametric mechanical package, to a perpetual licence, or to a free modeller.
Short answer: Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. For Autodesk Fusion users, the top three picks from our CAD ranking are Onshape, Shapr3D and SOLIDWORKS. Pick Onshape if you want browser-based parametric CAD with version control and a published per-seat price. These 12 products are all in Best CAD Software in 2026; the notes say how each one compares with Autodesk Fusion.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
Pricing: Subscription per seat, published; reduced startup and personal tiers

Built for: Small workshops and startups needing CAD and CAM in one subscription
Not for: Organisations that must keep design files on their own infrastructure
01
Why buyers look past Autodesk Fusion
01
One cloud platform for everything
Autodesk describes Fusion as combining CAD, CAM, CAE and PCB in a single, integrated cloud software platform, with hubs, projects and members managing the data. That suits a team that wants design and machining in one place. A user who only models parts, or who must keep files on local disks, may find the platform larger than the task.
02
Access is a subscription with extras on top
Autodesk documents paid Fusion subscriptions in terms of 1 month, 1 year or 3 years, with advanced capabilities such as extensions and Fusion Manage bought separately, and Flex tokens as a pay-as-you-go currency for cloud computing services. The structure is flexible, but the total depends on which extras a team needs, so a buyer comparing a one-off licence has to add them up.
03
The method may not match the work
Fusion is built around parametric solid modelling, with sketch, surface, mesh, form and sheet metal tools in the same design workspace. Teams whose work is freeform surfaces, 2D drafting or building models often do better in a tool built for that trade, and teams on large assemblies sometimes want a dedicated mechanical package.

Onshape
United States · Published
Onshape is the closest like-for-like in the browser: per-seat plans published at $1,500 (Standard) and $2,500 (Professional) per user per year, billed annually. Its Free plan is for non-commercial use and every document on it is public. Onshape has no perpetual option, and CAM and simulation sit on the Professional plan.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you want browser-based parametric CAD with version control and a published per-seat price.
Shapr3D runs on macOS, iPadOS, Windows and visionOS. Its free Basic plan allows 2 projects, and Pro costs $299 per Editor seat per year, excluding VAT. It is lighter than Fusion: no integrated electronics or simulation, and direct enterprise data options only on the quoted Enterprise plan.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you design on an iPad or Mac and want a low yearly price per seat.
SOLIDWORKS is a long-established set of 2D and 3D product development solutions, with browser-based applications alongside the desktop product, and a quote-based route to pricing on the vendor's page. It is a mechanical design package without Fusion's single-platform bundling of electronics and cloud data.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if your suppliers and customers already exchange SOLIDWORKS files.
Designcenter Solid Edge from Siemens combines direct modelling with parametric control (synchronous technology) and covers mechanical and electrical design, simulation, manufacturing and data management. Siemens describes a low-cost subscription entry, but publishes no prices on the page we read, so a quote is needed.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you want direct and parametric modelling in one mechanical package from a large industrial vendor.
FreeCAD is a free, open source parametric 3D modeller for Windows, Mac and Linux, with no licence fee, sign-up or paywall. Workbenches cover FEA, BIM, CAM and an experimental CFD module. It has no vendor support contract and a less polished interface than Fusion.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you want no licence fee and are prepared to support yourself.
Rhino is sold as a permanent licence: €995 for a full single-user licence in Europe, €595 to upgrade, with no maintenance fees. It runs on Windows and Mac. Its focus is freeform modelling rather than Fusion's integrated machining, simulation and electronics.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you model complex shapes and prefer to own the licence outright.
SketchUp is priced per user and billed annually: Go $10.75, Pro $33.25 and Studio $71.58 a month. Go runs on web and iPad only, Pro adds desktop, and Studio is Windows only. It is a 3D design tool for architecture and presentation, and not a parametric mechanical package.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if your models are buildings, interiors or concepts rather than machined parts.
Octave BricsCAD is available for Windows, Mac and Linux in Lite (2D), Pro (2D and 3D) and industry levels, including Mechanical and BIM toolsets and an Ultimate bundle. A 30-day trial is offered. It is DWG-centred drafting software, so it replaces Fusion only where the output is drawings.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if your Fusion use is mostly 2D drawings and DWG exchange.
ZWCAD, from ZWSOFT in Guangzhou, is sold as a perpetual or network licence, advertised from $899, with a 30-day free trial. It handles 2D and 3D drawing and DWG, DXF and DWT files; dedicated 3D mechanical modelling is a separate ZWSOFT product, ZW3D.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you need a DWG drafting tool that you buy once.
Archicad from Graphisoft, part of the Nemetschek Group, is a BIM platform for architects on Windows and macOS. New commercial licences are subscriptions (Studio, Collaborate and Max), with perpetual licences phased out after 2026. It designs buildings, not mechanical parts or CAM toolpaths.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if your projects are buildings and you need a BIM platform.
QCAD is a professional 2D CAD system with an open source core. It does drawings only: no 3D modelling, no CAM and no simulation, which Fusion bundles. That narrow scope is the point for users who only need flat technical drawings.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you only need 2D technical drawings and want open source software.
PTC Creo is a high-end parametric mechanical CAD package, sold by subscription per seat and, according to our category data, either on premises or as SaaS (Creo+). Entry prices are not published on the pages we could reach. It is aimed at larger engineering organisations rather than individuals.
Switch from Autodesk Fusion if you have large assemblies and an engineering department that needs enterprise support.
Fusion remains the right choice when one person or a small team takes a part from sketch to toolpath and wants design, manufacturing, simulation and electronics in the same cloud workspace, with versions kept in hubs and projects. If you need the machining and the model together, and the 1 month, 1 year or 3 year subscription terms suit your cash flow, splitting these steps over several tools adds exports and cost.

What moving off Autodesk Fusion involves
01
Parametric history rarely transfers
Features, sketches and constraints belong to each tool's own model. Expect to export neutral geometry such as STEP and rebuild the parametric history by hand where you need to edit it, or keep Fusion running read-only for old projects while new work starts in the replacement.
02
Check where CAM and simulation go
Fusion bundles manufacturing and simulation in the same platform. Many alternatives cover modelling only, or put CAM and simulation on a higher plan (Onshape Professional, for example), so list the machining and analysis steps you run today before comparing prices.

Questions about replacing Autodesk Fusion
5 answers
What is the closest alternative to Autodesk Fusion?
Onshape is the nearest browser-based option, with per-seat plans published at $1,500 and $2,500 per user per year. Shapr3D is the lighter choice for iPad and Mac users. For desktop-first mechanical work, SOLIDWORKS and Solid Edge are the established options.
Is there a free alternative to Fusion?
FreeCAD is free and open source with no sign-up. Shapr3D has a free Basic plan limited to 2 projects. Onshape's Free plan is for non-commercial use only, with all documents public, so it does not suit client work.
Can I buy CAD software once instead of subscribing?
Rhino is sold as a permanent licence (€995 in Europe, with no maintenance fees) and ZWCAD offers perpetual and network licences. Both have a narrower scope than Fusion, so check that the modelling and manufacturing steps you need are covered.
Which alternative works on a Mac?
Rhino, Shapr3D, SketchUp (on Pro), BricsCAD, FreeCAD and Archicad list Mac support on their own pages. Onshape runs in a browser. Check the exact edition, since some SketchUp plans are Windows only.
Which alternative is better for 2D drawings?
BricsCAD and ZWCAD work with DWG files and QCAD is a 2D-only system with an open source core. Fusion is a modelling platform, so teams that mainly draw may be paying for scope they do not use.
