Zoom Workplace vs Google Meet

Zoom sells meetings as its own product with a Basic plan capped at 40 minutes and paid plans per user. Google gives Meet away to anyone with a Google account with a one-hour cap, and sells longer, larger meetings only inside Google Workspace. Zoom is the stand-alone choice; Meet is cheapest if your company already lives in Workspace.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    The free tier

Zoom Basic allows 100 participants for up to 40 minutes, with no cloud recording listed and a small AI allowance. Google says anyone with a Google account can host meetings of up to 100 invited participants for up to 60 minutes, and one-to-one calls have no time limit. Google's free version is the more generous one.

  2. 02

Paid price and what it buys

Zoom Pro costs $16.99 a month per user ($14.16 billed annually) and Business $21.99 ($18.33). Google has no separate Meet price: Workspace Starter is 6.80 euros a month, with 100 participants, and recording only from Standard at 13.60 euros. Meet is cheaper if you need the rest of Workspace; Zoom is the only one you can buy for video alone.

    Depends on the buyer

  3. 03

    Meeting size

Zoom's Pro plan stays at 100 participants and Business reaches 300 per meeting. Google's Workspace plans scale from 100 on Starter to 150 on Standard, 500 on Plus and 1,000 on Enterprise. Above 300 people, Google's higher tiers are the ones with a published number, but they require the pricier Workspace plans.

    Edge: Google Meet

  4. 04

    Recording and storage

Zoom Pro and Business list 10 GB of cloud recording storage, and Basic lists local recording only. Google saves Meet recordings to Drive from Standard and up, so storage comes out of the 2 TB or 5 TB pooled with the rest of Workspace. Zoom's allowance is a hard 10 GB; Google's depends on your plan.

    Edge: Google Meet

  5. 05

    Duration on paid plans

Zoom Pro and Business meetings can run 30 hours. Google's paid meetings can last up to 24 hours. For all-day sessions both are enough; the difference only matters for continuous events.

03

When neither fits

If you want video that is not tied to a suite or a US account, our video conferencing ranking also includes Whereby and Jitsi Meet, which is open source and can be self-hosted. Check their limits before moving a large team.
