DaVinci Resolve vs Adobe Premiere Pro

One is sold once, the other is rented. DaVinci Resolve has a free version and a one-off Studio licence, and bundles editing, colour, effects and audio. Premiere Pro is subscription only, with no free version, and earns its place by sitting next to the rest of Creative Cloud.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Where they differ

DaVinci Resolve 2 · Adobe Premiere Pro 2 · open 1
  1. 01

    Cost over time

Resolve's page lists Studio as a one-time licence at $295 and offers a free version. Premiere's page lists the single app at $22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, and $37.99 a month per licence for teams. Over a few years the one-off purchase is plainly cheaper, and stopping the Premiere payment ends the licence.

  2. 02

What the free option gives you

Resolve's free version works with 8-bit video at up to 60fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD, and includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading. Premiere offers a 7-day trial and no free version. For a freelancer who is starting out, Resolve costs nothing to learn.

    Edge: DaVinci Resolve

  3. 03

    Learning curve

Resolve ships editing, colour, effects and audio together, so a team that only cuts interviews carries the learning cost of all four. Premiere is the more familiar editing surface in many agencies. For someone who just needs to trim and caption a clip, neither is the simplest tool in our ranking.

  4. 04

    Ecosystem and handover

Premiere sits beside the rest of Creative Cloud, and our data names that as the reason agencies standardise on it. Resolve answers exit and independence better, but a client that sends Premiere projects makes that advantage smaller. Where exchange with other Adobe tools matters, Premiere is the easier fit.

    Edge: Adobe Premiere Pro

  5. 05

    AI and higher specs

Resolve Studio adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, 10-bit video up to 120 frames per second and resolutions beyond 4K. Premiere's single app includes 25 generative credits a month, and Creative Cloud Pro lists 4,000. They answer different needs: grading and specs at Resolve, generative tools at Adobe.

    Depends on the buyer

DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro: questions

3 answers
Is DaVinci Resolve really free?

Yes, there is a free version, limited to 8-bit video up to Ultra HD at 60fps. Studio is a separate one-time licence listed at $295 on the vendor page.

Can I buy Premiere Pro once?

Not on the page we read: Premiere is sold by subscription only, as a single app or inside Creative Cloud, with a 7-day trial.

Which is better for colour grading?

Resolve is built around colour as one of its four disciplines. Premiere does grading too, but colour is not why teams choose it.
