Runway vs Pika

Runway and Pika both sell credits that unlock a menu of video models, so the real question is how far a month of credits goes and what you may do with the output. Runway starts with a one-time free grant and runs up to a Max tier whose credits roll over for a month. Pika has no free monthly credits at all, but its Starter tier lists 900 credits for $10 a month, and a commercial licence arrives at Creator. Neither is aimed at scripted presenter videos, which is a different product category.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

Runway 4 · Pika 2 · open 0
  1. 01

    Sixty credits for five seconds

Runway publishes what each model costs in credits: Gen-4.5 is 60 credits per five seconds, Aleph 2.0 is 140 credits per five seconds, and Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p is 160 credits per four seconds. The same plan therefore buys very different amounts of video depending on the model. On Standard, the 625 monthly credits come to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5. The cost table is on the pricing page, which makes budgeting a clip count easy.

    What Pika's monthly tiers hold

Pika lists Starter at 900 credits, Creator at 3,150 and Fancy at 8,550, priced at $10, $35 and $95 a month billed monthly. Parallel generations climb with the tier: two at Starter, eight at Creator and unlimited at Fancy. The pages we read give the tier totals but the credit cost of each model is not shown in what we read, so converting credits into seconds of video is guesswork until you try it.

  3. 03

A free plan that is only a trial

Runway's Free plan is 125 credits granted once, not each month, so it works as a test drive and then ends. Pika's Free plan has zero monthly credits and lets you buy credit packs only. Pika also states that the free plan does not include a commercial licence. Neither free option supports ongoing work, but Runway at least lets you generate something before paying anything.

  4. 04

    Where the commercial licence begins

For ad or client work, Pika is explicit: the commercial licence is included from Creator at $35 a month, and not on Free. Priority queue and early model access are held back for Fancy at $95. Runway shows no comparable licence row on its pricing page, so check its terms of use before client delivery. Pika wins this round on clarity alone, since the line is stated.

Rollover and the top of the ladder

Runway's Standard, Pro and Max tiers carry 625, 2,250 and 9,500 credits a month, at $12 (billed annually), $28 and $76. Only Max lets credits roll over, and only for one month. The page also has Team and Enterprise and API tabs for bigger needs. Pika tops out at Fancy with 8,550 credits and then points to a custom Enterprise plan, and it does not state any rollover in what we read.

    Who stands behind each service

Runway's terms say the website and services are controlled by Runway AI, Inc., with disputes litigated in New York County, and the about page lists offices in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, London, Paris, Tel Aviv and Tokyo. Pika's privacy policy names Mellis, Inc. in Palo Alto, California. Both are listed as United States companies, so neither offers a European base. Runway shows more detail on where it operates.

When neither fits

If you need a presenter-led explainer or a training video from a script, look at Synthesia or HeyGen, which are built for that and not for prompt-driven clips. Luma AI is a further generative option if you want to compare a third model family.

Runway or Pika: questions

3 answers
Do the free credits renew at either vendor?

No on both counts. Runway grants 125 credits once on its Free plan, and Pika's Free plan has zero monthly credits with packs only. To keep generating every month you need a paid tier at either vendor.

Can I use output in a client ad on a starter plan?

At Pika the commercial licence is listed from Creator, so Starter and Free do not include it. Runway shows no such row on its pricing page, so read its terms of use before you deliver client work.

Which one lets unused credits carry over?

Runway does, but only on Max, and only for one month. Pika states nothing on its pricing page about any rollover for its tiers, so assume credits do not carry over unless you confirm it with the vendor.
