Pocket Casts vs Overcast
Pocket Casts runs on phones and in a browser, while Overcast is an Apple-only app made by one developer. No amount appears on either site we read, which leaves platform and the maker as the real deciders.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
you move between an Android phone, an iPhone and a laptop browser and want one library on all of them, and you accept that plan prices were not visible to us.
you only use Apple devices, want shorter silences and even volume in the free version, and are fine with small ads or a single developer as your vendor.

Cutting dead air and quiet voices
Overcast names two audio features on its homepage: Smart Speed shortens silences in talk shows and Voice Boost normalises volume across shows. Pocket Casts lists folders, Up Next, Shuffle and Bookmarks on its plans page, but the pages we read name no silence or volume tool.

What a paying listener gets
Pocket Casts has two paid tiers. Plus adds wearable apps, and Patron adds early feature access, 100GB of cloud storage for uploaded audio, a supporter badge and extra app icons. Overcast has one optional annual subscription for bonus features that can hide ads. Pocket Casts shows more for the money.

Cost you can see before installing
Neither site gave us an amount, currency or trial length. Pocket Casts describes the app as free with paid subscriptions. Overcast says core features are free with small visual ads. Overcast tells you what the free version costs you (ads); Pocket Casts leaves it open.

Who is behind the app
Overcast states the developer is one person, the product is self-funded, and the copyright line names Overcast Radio, LLC. The pages we read for Pocket Casts name no country or owner. A named small company is clearer than silence, though one person also means a thin safety net.

When neither fits
If you want an open-source app or a service that bundles paid shows, neither fits as the main choice. AntennaPod and Podimo are two other entries in our podcast apps list.
