Overcast alternatives: 10 podcast apps tools compared

People leave Overcast mainly because it only exists on Apple devices, because the free version shows ads, or because a one-developer app is a thin base for a daily habit. They move to players on other platforms, to open source apps with no company behind them, or to apps that bundle shows of their own.

Short answer: Podverse, Castro and Podurama head the list of Overcast alternatives drawn from our podcast apps ranking. Challengers take places 1 to 3 here. Big brands follow in the order of our category ranking. Podverse is the one to try if you want an open source player that runs on iPhone and Android alike. All 10 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Podcast Apps in 2026, and each says where it differs from Overcast.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Overcast

#2 of 12 in our podcast apps ranking

  • Pricing: Most features free with small ads; annual subscription adds features and can hide the ads
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: iPhone owners who value shorter silences and even volume without extra setup
  • Not for: Android users and teams wanting a vendor with staff
01

Why buyers look past Overcast

  1. 01

The app stops at Apple hardware

Overcast's own pages describe a player for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and mention nothing else. A household with an Android phone, a work Windows laptop or a browser-only habit cannot carry its queue along, and anyone who changes platform has to change player too.

  2. 02

Free means ads, ad-free means paying

The site calls the app free and supported by small visual ads promoting podcasts. An annual subscription adds bonus features and can hide those ads. The pages we read show no price, currency or trial length for it, so the cost of removing the ads is only visible inside the app.

  3. 03

A small company in one jurisdiction

The terms name Overcast Radio, LLC, say the app is controlled from offices in the United States and put disputes under New York law, in Westchester County. The vendor describes a single developer without investors. That keeps things simple, but it also means one person's time decides the pace of change.

What each one does differently

Podverse

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Podverse ships free and open source apps for iOS, Android, F-Droid and the web, so one account follows you across platforms. Chapters, transcripts and streaming payments to creators work without paying. New-episode notifications, device sync, clips and playlists sit in Premium, which has a three-month trial. The audience is small and the vendor names a team, not a company.

Switch from Overcast if you want an open source player that runs on iPhone and Android alike.

Castro

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Castro changes how a subscription behaves: new episodes drop into an Inbox, and only the ones you promote reach a single queue that downloads over wifi. Chosen favourites can bypass the Inbox. Castro Plus is billed yearly and adds advanced playback options, sideloading, a night mode and custom icons. It runs on iPhone only, and the site names no company or country.

Switch from Overcast if you stay on iPhone but want to triage new episodes by hand.

Why Castro is #5 among 12 podcast apps products →

Podurama

United Kingdom · Published

Podurama covers iOS, Android, the web, Windows and macOS and syncs across an unlimited number of devices. It generates episode summaries and AI chapters, shows trailers, and its home page, which says London and calls the app ad free, advertises a lifetime premium on sale. The amount, the premium feature list and any legal entity are not shown there.

Switch from Overcast if you listen on a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone and want them in step.

AntennaPod

Not stated by the vendor · Published

AntennaPod is a GPL-3.0 player for Android written by volunteers, with about three people contributing code regularly. It reads any RSS feed, imports and exports your subscriptions, and has no ads, no account and nothing to cancel. Nothing exists for iPhone, and no organisation stands behind a support promise, so help comes from the community.

Switch from Overcast if you are moving to Android and want a player nobody sells.

Podcini

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Podcini is an Android player under GPL-3.0 that takes content from YouTube and YouTube Music as well as normal feeds, and its repository tags point to AntennaPod as the starting point. A single named owner account keeps it going and the repository counts a few hundred stars. Expect slow releases, no iPhone app and nobody to hold accountable.

Switch from Overcast if you want one Android queue for feeds and YouTube audio.

Podcini comes 4 of 12 when podcast apps products are ranked here →

Pocket Casts

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

Pocket Casts has apps for iOS and Android and a web player. Its help centre documents OPML export, YouTube channels as sources and family sharing, and Plus members can hand out a two-month guest pass. Plus and Patron are the paid memberships, billed monthly or yearly. We could not read its product pages, so prices and ownership stay unconfirmed.

Switch from Overcast if you want an app on both phone platforms with a web player and a documented export.

Podimo

Denmark · Published

Podimo ApS is a Copenhagen company founded in 2019 that sells one subscription covering exclusive podcasts, audiobooks and community features in seven countries. The Dutch page names a monthly price after a 30-day trial. Its exclusive shows play only inside its own app, so it replaces the open feed model rather than copying it.

Switch from Overcast if you would pay a flat monthly fee for shows you cannot get elsewhere.

Where Podimo stands: place 9 of 12 in the podcast apps ranking →

Castbox

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Castbox presents itself as a free podcast app for iPhone and Android and lists Amazon Alexa, Google Home, CarPlay and Android Auto as places to play. The home page quotes 259 million volumes of audio. The footer credits Guru Network but gives no country or address, and the site does not say how a free app earns its keep.

Switch from Overcast if you play podcasts through a smart speaker or a car dashboard as much as a phone.

Podbean

United States · Published

Podbean Inc., incorporated in Nevada, runs a listening app beside a hosting business, claiming 16M downloads and a 4.7 average rating. Listening costs nothing, while paid hosting plans are sold to creators, who can also record and publish from the same app family. The player is a side product, so listener refinements are thinner.

Switch from Overcast if you also publish a show and want listening and hosting from one vendor.

Apple Podcasts

United States · See profile

Apple Podcasts is preinstalled on Apple devices and in select car models, offers video, transcripts and an Enhance Dialogue control, and syncs across Apple hardware. Apple states that millions of shows cost nothing, though some publishers sell subscriptions. It replaces Overcast without leaving the platform or the largest company on this list.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You want one open source player on iPhone and Android

Podverse: Its apps are free and open source on iOS, Android, F-Droid and the web; sync, notifications, clips and playlists need Premium.

  2. 02

You want to approve each new episode before it queues

Castro: New episodes arrive in an Inbox and only the ones you promote join a single queue that downloads over wifi.

  3. 03

You listen on a Mac or Windows PC as well as a phone

Podurama: It runs on iOS, Android, the web, Windows and macOS and syncs across unlimited devices; the lifetime price is not shown on its home page.

  4. 04

You are moving to Android and want nothing to pay for

AntennaPod: It is a GPL-3.0 player with no ads, no account and no subscription, kept going by volunteers.

  5. 05

You want an app on both phones with a documented export

Pocket Casts: Its help centre documents OPML export, and Plus and Patron are billed monthly or yearly; we could not confirm prices.

04

When Overcast is still the right choice

Overcast remains a sound pick if you live on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and are content with the ads. Smart Speed shortens silences and Voice Boost evens out volume in the free version, and the app works from public RSS feeds, with shows added through Apple Podcasts appearing in it and episodes downloading from the podcaster's own servers. If your only complaint is the ads, price the annual subscription inside the app before changing player.

05

What moving off Overcast involves

  1. 01

Take your subscription list out first

Overcast says it works with public RSS feeds, so the shows are not locked inside it. Before deleting the app, find how it lists your subscriptions, because AntennaPod imports and exports them and Pocket Casts documents OPML export. Check that the new player finds every feed, especially private or paid ones.

  2. 02

Do not expect identical audio features

Smart Speed and Voice Boost are Overcast's names for silence trimming and volume levelling. Other players may offer similar controls under different names, or none. Play a few episodes of your usual shows and compare loudness and pacing before you retire the old app.

Questions about replacing Overcast

6 answers
Is Overcast free to use?

Yes for most features. The site says the app is free and supported by small visual ads, and an annual subscription adds bonus features and can hide the ads. The pages we read show no price or free-trial length for the subscription.

Is there an Overcast app for Android?

Overcast's site describes a player for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and names no Android or desktop version. Android users can look at AntennaPod, Podcini, Podverse, Pocket Casts, Castbox or Podurama.

Who is behind Overcast?

The terms name Overcast Radio, LLC as the contracting company, controlled from offices in the United States and governed by New York law, with disputes in Westchester County. The vendor describes a single developer with no big company or investors behind it.

Which podcast apps cost nothing and are open source?

AntennaPod and Podcini are GPL-3.0 players for Android with no paid tier. Podverse publishes its apps under a free and open source licence and runs on iOS, Android and the web, with sync, clips and playlists in a Premium membership.

Will my shows still work in another app?

Overcast says it works with public RSS feeds, and AntennaPod reads any RSS feed. Shows hosted only inside an app, such as Podimo's exclusive catalogue, play only in that app.

What if I want to stay on iPhone?

Castro and Apple Podcasts are described as iPhone and Apple-device apps, and Podverse and Pocket Casts also run on iOS. Castro adds an Inbox for new episodes, while Apple Podcasts is already installed.
