Mixpanel vs Amplitude

Both meter by tracked events and give every plan unlimited seats, so the choice comes down to the free allowance, where a paywall appears and how EU hosting is handled. Mixpanel is published up to 20M events a month before a quote; Amplitude doubles the entry allowance but moves Growth behind sales.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

How much you get before paying

Mixpanel's free plan allows 1M events a month and 10K session replays. Amplitude's free plan allows 2M events a month and also 10K replays. Both include unlimited seats. For a small team that wants room to grow before any invoice, Amplitude starts with double the event allowance.

  2. 02

    What happens at scale

Mixpanel's pricing page shows Growth rates up to 20M events a month, with the first 1M in the base price; only above that does it ask you to contact sales. Amplitude publishes Plus but prices Growth and Enterprise by event volume through sales. Mixpanel keeps its numbers visible for longer.

    Edge: Mixpanel

  3. 03

    Experiments, replay and extras

Mixpanel lists session replay, heatmaps, experiments and feature flags on every plan, each with caps. Amplitude puts A/B/n testing and 20,000 monthly replays in Growth, while Plus adds heatmaps. Both charge extra for some add-ons. Mixpanel gets experimentation to a smaller account without a sales step.

    Edge: Mixpanel

  4. 04

    Data location and path analysis

Mixpanel terms allow a US or European Economic Area data centre as the customer elects, and EU residency is set at project creation. We found no regional hosting statement for Amplitude on the pages we read. Amplitude's Journeys chart can sort paths by frequency or similarity; Mixpanel's Flows shows the top 3 intermediate events.

When neither fits

If you want an open-source stack you can run yourself or a tool with its own experiment engine, look at PostHog or GrowthBook. Teams that mostly need in-app guides may find Pendo closer.
