Freshdesk vs Zoho Desk

Two per-agent ticketing systems for cost-conscious teams. Freshdesk is the more self-contained product, with routing, SLAs, automation and a knowledge base across three paid plans. Zoho Desk has a free plan for three users and four paid editions that add SLAs, telephony and multi-brand portals step by step, and is best when the company already runs on Zoho.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    Starting for nothing

Zoho Desk has a free plan with three user licences, one email channel and basic ticket handling, and a 15-day trial of the paid editions without a credit card. Freshdesk's pricing page lists no free plan: new accounts get 14 days on Enterprise, then paid plans from 19 dollars per agent per month on annual billing. For a team of three with no budget, Zoho Desk is the option.

    Edge: Zoho Desk

  2. 02

    Inside or outside a suite

If the other tools in the business are Zoho, customer context reaches Zoho Desk without connectors, and it is close to a default choice. Outside that suite it feels less coherent. Freshdesk makes no such assumption about what else you run. The winner here depends completely on the software already in place.

    Depends on the buyer

  3. 03

    Interface and day-to-day polish

Zoho Desk follows Zoho's own interface conventions, which take adjusting to, and a team that wants the most polished interface is the buyer it suits least. Freshdesk's weaknesses lie elsewhere, in reporting, the mobile app and an automation builder that gets fiddly at volume. For agents new to both, Freshdesk is the gentler start.

    Edge: Freshdesk

  4. 04

    Supporting several brands

Both can do it, at different points in the range. Zoho Desk reserves the multi-brand help centre for Enterprise, the top of four paid editions. Freshdesk offers separate mailboxes, portals and knowledge bases per product from Pro, the middle of three plans, with up to five products, and an unlimited number on Enterprise. Which is cheaper depends on the regional price list you are shown.

    Depends on the buyer

  5. 05

    Where SLAs and routing start

Zoho Desk includes SLAs and escalations from its Standard edition, the second of four, and adds departments, telephony integration and load-based round-robin assignment in Professional, with skill-based routing in Enterprise. Freshdesk lists multiple SLA policies and round-robin routing in Pro and skill-based routing in Enterprise. Zoho Desk lets a team reach SLAs one step earlier in its range.

    Edge: Zoho Desk

03

When neither fits

Neither fits an organisation that must keep its help desk on its own servers: both pricing pages sell hosted subscriptions per agent. Zammad is open source and free to self-host, and Deskpro offers an on-premise edition alongside its cloud version.

Freshdesk or Zoho Desk: questions

4 answers
Does Zoho Desk or Freshdesk have a free plan?

Zoho Desk does. Its free plan covers three user licences with one email channel and basic ticket management.

Freshdesk's pricing page lists no free plan, only a 14-day trial of Enterprise and then three paid plans starting at 19 dollars per agent per month, billed annually.

Is Freshdesk or Zoho Desk better if we do not use other Zoho products?

Freshdesk is the safer pick in that case. Zoho Desk feels less coherent as a standalone product and its interface conventions take adjusting to. Its main advantage, customer context flowing in from the wider suite without connectors, does not apply if nothing else is Zoho.

Which plan do I need for several brands in Freshdesk and Zoho Desk?

In Freshdesk, Pro allows up to five products, each with its own mailbox, portal and knowledge base, and Enterprise removes the limit; Growth does not include it.

In Zoho Desk the multi-brand help centre is part of the Enterprise edition only, while multiple departments start at Professional.

Which includes SLAs on a lower plan, Freshdesk or Zoho Desk?

Zoho Desk's comparison table shows SLAs and escalations from the Standard edition upwards, with more SLAs per department in Professional and Enterprise. Freshdesk's pricing page lists multiple SLA policies in Pro and Enterprise, together with business hours per group and round-robin routing.
